Episode 17 – Sleep-talking is usually cute

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œAlright, is everyone here? Letโ€™s hop on the bus and head home.โ€

Our teacher said this energetically to us as we gathered in the lobby at checkout time.

โ€œAlright, everyone, get on the bus. There are other guests on board, so please file in from the back.โ€

The three of them were surprisingly quiet both as we boarded the bus parked in front of the hotel alongside the other passengers and when I took my seat.

ใ€€
Just as I was starting to feel relieved that they wouldnโ€™t cause a scene in public, Shirotori sat down next to me.

โ€œHehe, Iโ€™m sitting next to Mitchi.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWell, I guess so.โ€

โ€œAh, the Inter-High is really over, isnโ€™t it? It feels kind of lonely.โ€

Gazing out the window, Shirotori murmured wistfully.

โ€œIt really did go by in a flash.โ€

โ€œRight? But itโ€™s thanks to you, Mitchi, that we can be here like this.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re exaggerating. Itโ€™s because everyone worked so hard.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYou really are so kind, Mitchi.โ€

Shiratori leaned her head against my shoulder.

โ€œH-hey.โ€

โ€œCan I stay like this just a little bit?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ Wonโ€™t this cause a big fuss if the other two see us?โ€

โ€œAre you worried about Mai or Masa?โ€

โ€œN-no, thatโ€™s not it.โ€

โ€œThen letโ€™s stay like this. Theyโ€™re both sitting up front, so itโ€™ll be fine. Mitchiโ€™s shoulders are bigโ€”it makes me feel safe.โ€

A moment of quiet passed.

As I gazed out the window, feeling the weight of Shiratori quietly leaning against my shoulder, I found myself unusually nervous.

Shiratori is one of the most beautiful girls in school, and sheโ€™s usually a cheerful, really nice person.

Itโ€™s impossible not to be aware of her feelings when a girl like that is so into me.

The way she acts so clingy when itโ€™s just the two of usโ€”if I think of it as a contrast to her usual self, I canโ€™t help but find it cute.

โ€ฆโ€ฆMaybe this could actually work?

If I confessed to Shiratori right here, Iโ€™m pretty sure weโ€™d start dating.

Shiratori is cute, weโ€™re close friends, and dating her might actually be funโ€ฆ No, before I even think about that, there are a few things I need to confirm first.

โ€œHey, Shiratori.โ€

โ€œHmm, whatโ€™s up? Want to hold hands?โ€

โ€œN-noโ€ฆ I mean, what do you think would happen if Yukimura and the others saw us holding hands?โ€

โ€œSo youโ€™re still worried about Mai and the others?โ€

โ€œW-well, weโ€™re in the same club, after all. I donโ€™t want us to fall out.โ€

โ€œHmm. But I donโ€™t really know anything about Mai and the others.โ€

โ€œR-right. Then, what if I were to hold hands with Yukimura or someone like that?โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about?โ€

Shiratori sat up in a panic and glared at me as if I were something filthy.

โ€œN-no, Iโ€™m just giving an example.โ€

โ€œWhy would you bring up an example like that? Youโ€™re notโ€”with Mai, are you?โ€

โ€œNothingโ€™s going on! Absolutely nothing!โ€

Please, donโ€™t start frantically rummaging through your bag trying to pull something out!

ใ€€
โ€œR-really? Seriously, donโ€™t ask me weird questions out of the blue.โ€

โ€œH-haha, sorry. Um, come to think of it, you were saying something yesterday about wanting to โ€˜mess things upโ€™ or something like that, werenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYeah. Is it okay if I do?โ€

โ€œN-noโ€ฆ I mean, when you say you want to โ€˜mess things up,โ€™ what exactly do you plan to do?โ€

I mustered up the courage to ask.

If it wasnโ€™t the kind of grim scenario I was imagining, thereโ€™d be no need to be this scared.

โ€œUm, I want to take a bath with Mitchi.โ€

โ€œA bathโ€ฆa-a bath?โ€

An unexpected erotic turn of events?

N-no wayโ€ฆ if I start imagining it, Iโ€™m going to get a reaction in the wrong places.

Stay calm, just stay calm.

โ€œShiratori, is taking a bath what you mean by โ€˜messing things upโ€™?โ€

“Nnnn, in the bath, weโ€™ll do naughty things until Mitchi is completely spent. I mean, weโ€™d do such intense stuff that youโ€™d be unable to take a bath without me.โ€

โ€œIntense stuffโ€ฆโ€

What on earth is this โ€œintense stuffโ€ sheโ€™s talking about?

โ€ฆNo, donโ€™t let your mind wanderโ€”my bodyโ€™s starting to heat up.

โ€œAnd then, Iโ€™d keep making you feel good all night long. To the point where you couldnโ€™t stay in bed without me.โ€

โ€œMake me feel goodโ€ฆ gulpโ€

Oh no, Iโ€™m droolingโ€ฆ Wait, does this mean this whole situation is nothing but good for me?

โ€œSoโ€ฆ so youโ€™re just going to make me feel good and then call it a day?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what Iโ€™ve been sayingโ€”Iโ€™m going to drive you so wild that you wonโ€™t be able to breathe without me.โ€

โ€œHuh? Did you say that?โ€

โ€œYeah. So every dayโ€”morning, noon, and nightโ€”Iโ€™m going to drive you wild.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆMorning, noon, and night?โ€

โ€œYeah. I mean, I want to mess you up so bad that you can’t think about anything but me.โ€

In Shirotori’s eyes, gazing at me with such rapture, I sensed madness more than eroticism.

The excitement I’d felt just moments ago had vanished, and I calmly concluded that I really shouldn’t get involved romantically with this girl.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see. But if we do that, it might interfere with studies.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you getting in on a recommendation?โ€

โ€œHuh? How did you know thatโ€ฆโ€ฆ Oh, wait, why do you think that?โ€

โ€œWell, a lot of club managers get recommended admissions.โ€

โ€œW-well, thatโ€™s true. But managers from other clubs might take up those spots, right?โ€

I desperately tried to cover it up.

If, by any chance, they found out I was going to college on a recommendation, thereโ€™s a high chance theyโ€™d end up applying to the same university.

Whatโ€™s more, all three of themโ€”including Shiratoriโ€”are actually pretty good students.

Even the Waseda and Keio universities I want to go toโ€”thereโ€™s a high probability theyโ€™d get in.

I absolutely canโ€™t let them find out.

โ€œHmm. Well, I guess youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œExactly. So, youโ€™d better study hard until graduation.โ€

โ€œWhere are you applying, Mitchi?โ€

They were already trying to probe me.

But thereโ€™s no way Iโ€™m going to answer honestly.

โ€œI donโ€™t know. My grades arenโ€™t great, so Iโ€™ll apply somewhere I have a decent chance of getting in.โ€

โ€œA local school?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know, I havenโ€™t decided yet.โ€

Iโ€™ll play dumb no matter what she asks.

She looked a little bored, but Shirotori seemed to give up too. She pursed her lips and said, โ€œHmm,โ€ then turned to face forward.

โ€œAnyway, let me get some sleep. I stayed up late last night and Iโ€™m tired.โ€

โ€œOh, sorry. Yeah, I guess Iโ€™ll take it easy too.โ€

Shiratori let out a big yawn, โ€œAaaah,โ€ and leaned back against my shoulder again.

Sheโ€™s finally calmed down.

But as was clear from our conversation just now, if I let my guard down with these guys, Iโ€™m done for.

Iโ€™ve got to be careful not to accidentally mention anything about my college applications.

I should also warn the teacher not to talk too much about the recommendation.

โ€œMmmโ€ฆ Mitchiโ€ฆ mmmโ€ฆโ€

She was mumbling in her sleep.

She looks so cute when sheโ€™s asleep like this.

But calling out my name even in her sleep? Thatโ€™s pretty intense.

I wonder what sheโ€™s doing with me in her dreams.

โ€œMitchiโ€ฆ Iโ€™m going to get into Waseda or Keio tooโ€ฆ mmmโ€ฆโ€
