Episode 52 – Is that a real kiss?

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Nineteen days left until the cultural festival.

Yesterday, Rino and I almost kissed.

We didnโ€™t actually touch.

A call from our manager interrupted us at the last second.

So nothing happened.

In theory, at least, thatโ€™s how it should have been.

โ€œGood morning, Seita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆGood morning.โ€

The next morning, the moment I ran into Rino in front of our usual convenience store, we both looked away at the same time.

That wasnโ€™t the reaction of two people between whom nothing had happened.

Rinoโ€™s cheeks were flushed, and she was clutching the handles of her bag with both hands. I couldnโ€™t bring myself to look her in the face either, so I stared pointlessly at the product names on a nearby vending machine.

The closeness from yesterday came flooding back.

Her face was so close I could feel her breath.

Eyes that reflected only me.

[I donโ€™t mind.]

The words that came out of my own mouth.

And then I said one last thing.

[You can look forward to it.]

What exactly should I look forward to?

What on earth did I just give permission for?

If I could catch my past self, Iโ€™d grab him by the shoulders and demand an explanation. Why did I spout a line straight out of a romantic comedy protagonistโ€™s final act? Your story is still in the โ€œcultural festival preparationsโ€ phase, you know. Think about the pacing.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDo you regret what happened yesterday?โ€

Rino wasnโ€™t looking at me.

Her voice was soft.

Up until yesterday, she would have asked me much more forcefully. But right now, Rino is afraid of my answer.

Afraid that I might pull away.

Or that I might say it was a mistake.

She must be thinking that.

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t.โ€

I replied.

Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m not scared.

Just remembering it makes my heart race, and even now, I still feel a little like running away.

But I didnโ€™t regret it.

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. I think it was probably for the best that we stopped right there.โ€

Rinoโ€™s expression began to cloud over.

โ€œBut itโ€™s not that I didnโ€™t like it.โ€

When I continued, her eyes widened.

โ€œI just havenโ€™t caught up with my own feelings yet. Itโ€™s not that I didnโ€™t like you getting close to me, and Iโ€™m not taking back what I said yesterday.โ€

โ€œDoes that mean I can get my hopes up?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€œUntil when?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask me for a deadline.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll wait, but I want some kind of timeline.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make this sound like Iโ€™m taking reservations for a confession.โ€

Rino smiled ever so slightly.

Seeing that smile, I finally relaxed a little.

โ€œThereโ€™s no need to rush.โ€

As she said that, Rino tugged on my sleeve.

โ€œBut donโ€™t run away, okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tell you if I start to run away.โ€

โ€œAnd then?โ€

โ€œJust wait a little while.โ€

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll wait.โ€

Still holding onto my sleeve, Rino walked alongside me.

We didnโ€™t hold hands.

Up until yesterday, I might have felt like something was missing. But today, this slight distance felt just right.

Close enough to touch, yet not quite.

Even so, neither of us made a move to pull away.

We walked to school just like that, a little quieter than usual.

ใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ป

That afternoon, Rino left school early for a photo shoot.

โ€œIโ€™ll call you when Iโ€™m done.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to push yourself. Itโ€™s going to be late, right?โ€

โ€œBut I want to talk to Seita.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m staying late again today to help with the cultural festival preparations, so my reply might be delayed.โ€

โ€œThen, work hard for me too.โ€

โ€œAre you trying to dump your share of the work on me?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll make it up to you.โ€

โ€œWhat are you planning to do?โ€

When I asked that, Rino blushed all the way to her ears, as if sheโ€™d just remembered what happened yesterday.

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s still a secret.โ€

โ€œI shouldnโ€™t have asked.โ€

Rino left the classroom, looking back repeatedly as if she were reluctant to leave.

Her back eventually disappeared from view.

Just that alone made the seat next to me feel strangely empty.

After the closing assembly, preparations for the cultural festival began.

Todayโ€™s tasks were decorating the classroom and practicing for the customer service team.

After finishing the final draft of the accounting sheet, I took on the task of checking the costume teamโ€”which Rino was supposed to be in charge of.

It wasnโ€™t just for Rinoโ€™s sake.

As a member of the executive committee, I simply needed to catch up on the work that was falling behind.

Just as I was telling myself that, Hara peered over from the seat next to me at the accounting sheet.

โ€œTakahara-kun, itโ€™s quiet without Rino, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just the same as always.โ€

โ€œI mean you, Takahara-kunโ€”not the classroom.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m naturally quiet.โ€

โ€œBut today, you looked at Rinoโ€™s seat about three times.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œFive times, actually.โ€

Shinozaki, who was making paper flowers, corrected her.

โ€œDonโ€™t make it up.โ€

โ€œI was counting, after all.โ€

I stopped arguing and turned my gaze back to the accounting sheet.

It was trueโ€”I had looked over at Rinoโ€™s seat a few times.

Usually, whenever I looked over, Rino would be looking right back at me. If our eyes met, sheโ€™d smile, and sometimes sheโ€™d even toss me a note.

But not today.

It should have been quiet and perfect for focusing on my work, but I felt a little restless.

โ€œArenโ€™t you feeling lonely?โ€

Hara asked with a smirk.

โ€œSheโ€™ll get in touch once the shoot is over.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not really an answer, but I guess youโ€™ve already decided.โ€

I ignored her

But deep down, I couldnโ€™t deny it.

Iโ€™m lonely.

I guess thatโ€™s probably true.

Without even realizing it, Iโ€™d started taking it for granted that Rino was right beside me.

I, who used to be afraid of getting close to people, now feel lonely when someone isnโ€™t there.

Back in the day, that would have been an unthinkable change.

By a little past six in the afternoon, the only students left were me, Hara, and Shinozaki.

โ€œShould we head home soon?โ€

Hara said, stretching.

โ€œWhat about Takahara-kun?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to finish up this seating chart before I leave.โ€

โ€œCanโ€™t you do that tomorrow?โ€

โ€œI have to prepare some other materials tomorrow.โ€

โ€œFor Rino?โ€

โ€œFor the executive committee.โ€

โ€œYeah, yeah.โ€

Hara laughed cheerfully and left the classroom with Shinozaki.

I was left alone.

The classroom after sunset looked like a completely different place from what it had been during the day.

It was dark outside the window, and there were few voices coming from the hallway.

I turned my attention back to the seating chart for the cultural festival.

The old me would never have stayed behind alone in the classroom after school.

Just being at school used to be agonizing.

If I was left behind in an empty classroom, I felt like I was the only one cut off from the world.

But now itโ€™s different.

Decorations weโ€™d all made together were placed around my desk.

The finished sign was in front of the blackboard.

On my phone is a group photo.

And when I get home, Rino will contact me.

My place in the world is slowly taking shape.

Just as I finished filling in the last column of the schedule, the classroom door opened.

โ€œSeita.โ€

It was a voice I knew well.

I looked up.

Rino was standing in the doorway.

She wasnโ€™t wearing her school uniform.

Perhaps sheโ€™d worn it for the photo shootโ€”she had a light-colored dress on with a sheer jacket draped over it, and her hair was styled differently than usual. Traces of her light makeup remained, making her look far too glamorous for the classroom.

โ€œWhat are you doing here?โ€

โ€œMy shoot just wrapped up nearby. I thought you might still be here.โ€

โ€œThe school gates are about to close.โ€

โ€œI asked my manager, and I got permission from the teacher, too.โ€

She went to all that trouble just to come here?

Rino looked around the classroom, then lowered her gaze to the stack of materials on my desk.

โ€œDid you do my share, too?โ€

โ€œI was behind, so I just caught up.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€

โ€œIt was part of my job, so what can I say?โ€

Rino walked up to me.

Then, without saying a word, she spread her arms wide.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhat?โ€

โ€œTo thank you.โ€

โ€œIs hugging me your way of saying thanks?โ€

โ€œYou choose, Seita.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t see any options here.โ€

โ€œEither I hug you, or you hug me.โ€

โ€œSo either way, weโ€™re hugging.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Rino was serious.

I looked around.

The classroom was empty.

There was no sign of anyone in the hallway either.

But that wasnโ€™t a reason to hug her.

It shouldnโ€™t have been.

Iโ€™d seen that empty seat so many times today.

I felt lonely knowing Rino wasnโ€™t there.

Now, seeing her right in front of me, I feel relieved.

I didnโ€™t want to gloss over that feeling with just words.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWelcome back.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes flickered.

The next moment, she threw herself into my arms.

Her soft body brushed against my chest, and a sweet scent filled the air.

I staggered slightly as I caught Rino.

I wrapped my arms around her back.

I hugged her back of my own accord.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œI missed you.โ€

โ€œWe saw each other this morning, didnโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œI couldnโ€™t see you all afternoon.โ€

โ€œIt was only a few hours.โ€

โ€œIt felt like forever.โ€

Rino pressed her cheek against my chest and tightened her grip on my back.

I didnโ€™t let go either.

Holding someone close.

Itโ€™s even closer than holding hands.

I could feel everythingโ€”Rinoโ€™s body heat, her breath, and her shoulders moving gently against my chest.

โ€œMe too.โ€

The words died on my lips.

Rino looked up.

โ€œYou too, Seita?โ€

Her eyes shimmered with anticipation.

There was no turning back now.

Noโ€”I didnโ€™t want to turn back.

โ€œI missed you, too.โ€

Tears welled up in Rinoโ€™s eyes.

โ€œI looked over at your seat a few times today.โ€

โ€œHow many times?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t remember.โ€

โ€œWhat about Hara and the others?โ€

โ€œThey said three or five times.โ€

โ€œSeita was looking for me.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t exaggerate.โ€

โ€œBut it makes me happy.โ€

Rino laughed, on the verge of tears, and buried her face in my chest again.

โ€œDid you miss me when I wasnโ€™t there?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆA little.โ€

โ€œJust a little?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re really pressing me on this.โ€

โ€œI want to know.โ€

I moved my hand, resting on Rinoโ€™s back, just a little.

As if to stroke her.

Rinoโ€™s body trembled slightly.

โ€œI missed you.โ€

I answered honestly.

Rinoโ€™s arms wrapped around me even tighter.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to go home today.โ€

โ€œI have to go home, donโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œBut if I let you go now, the Seita I know today will be gone.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll still be here tomorrow.โ€

โ€œThe same Seita?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask me such philosophical questions out of the blue.โ€

โ€œThe Seita who came looking for me today.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll still remember that tomorrow.โ€

โ€œThe Seita who told me he wanted to see me.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t forget.โ€

โ€œThe Seita who held me close.โ€

Rino looked up.

We remained embraced, gazing into each otherโ€™s eyes from close range.

โ€œWill that still be there tomorrow, too?โ€

โ€œIt will be.โ€

โ€œForever?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™ll make sure it stays.โ€

When I answered, Rino closed her eyes.

Just like last night.

Our faces drew closer, little by little.

This time, the phone didnโ€™t ring.

There was no sign of anyone coming in.

My arms remained wrapped around Rinoโ€™s back.

Her arms wouldnโ€™t let go of me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

At a distance where we could almost touch, Rino called my name.

โ€œCan we pick up where we left off yesterday?โ€

My heart was pounding.

If I wanted to run away, I still could.

Rino wasnโ€™t forcing herself on me either.

She was just waiting for my answer.

Iโ€™m scared.

If I cross this line, something will truly change.

Itโ€™ll become harder to gloss over things with vague phrases like โ€œmore than friends,โ€ the way weโ€™ve done until now.

Even so.

Just not having Rino around today made me feel lonely.

I was happy to see her.

It was me who hugged her, and itโ€™s me who doesnโ€™t want to let her go right now.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆJust a little bit.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes wavered.

โ€œJust a little?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m still scared.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t want to run away.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Rino didnโ€™t come any closer.

Instead, she waited for my answer.

Yesterday, Rino was the one who made the first move.

Today, it was my turn to choose.

I touched Rinoโ€™s cheek.

A soft sensation spread through my fingertips.

Her eyelashes trembled.

I slowly leaned in.

Just a little closer.

Our breaths mingled.

And then Iโ€”gently brushed my lips against Rinoโ€™s forehead.

Just for an instant.

The moment our lips touched, I couldnโ€™t bear the embarrassment and pulled away.

Rino was completely frozen.

โ€œโ€ฆSeita?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s call it a day.โ€

โ€œDid you just kiss me?โ€

โ€œJust on the forehead.โ€

โ€œYou did that?โ€

โ€œYou can see for yourself, canโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œWho else would it be?โ€

Rinoโ€™s face flushed bright red all at once.

She pressed her hand to her forehead and almost crumpled to the ground right there.

I hurriedly caught her.

โ€œRino?โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œAre you okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m too happy to stand.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re exaggerating.โ€

โ€œSeita did it to me.โ€

Rino buried her face in my chest and repeated in a trembling voice.

โ€œI was waiting, and Seita came to me.โ€

โ€œWe couldnโ€™t kiss yet, though.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s fine.โ€

Rino lifted her face and smiled through her tears.

โ€œSince Seita chose it himself, anything is fine.โ€

Hearing those words, my heart swelled with warmth.

Keeping my hand on Rinoโ€™s cheek, I wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes with my thumb.

โ€œDonโ€™t cry.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s Seitaโ€™s fault.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll forgive you if you do it some more.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get too cocky.โ€

โ€œThen, just one more time.โ€

โ€œI told you thatโ€™s it for today.โ€

โ€œWhat about tomorrow?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make a reservation.โ€

Rino laughed and leaned her body against my chest once more.

We stayed embraced for a while in the empty classroom.

In front of the blackboard hung the sign weโ€™d all made together.

On the wall were unfinished decorations.

Outside the window lay the schoolyard, now completely dark.

The after-school classroom Iโ€™d spent my entire middle school years running away from.

And right now, in that very spot, I was holding the person I wanted to see more than anyone else.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI want you to do this on the day of the cultural festival, too.โ€

โ€œYou mean weโ€™re going to hug in a classroom?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll find a place where we can be alone.โ€

โ€œWhat do you think the cultural festival is?โ€

โ€œA day to make memories with Seita.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a class event.โ€

โ€œBoth are important.โ€

Rino pulled away from me just a little.

Even so, her hand was still clutching my uniform.

โ€œShould we go home?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œWant to hold hands?โ€

โ€œAre you asking me that now?โ€

I reached out my hand.

Rino looked surprised at first, then happily took my hand.

We intertwined our fingers.

We turned off the lights in the classroom and stepped out into the hallway.

On Rinoโ€™s forehead was the spot Iโ€™d touched a moment ago.

It wasnโ€™t visible to the eye.

But every now and then, sheโ€™d touch it, as if to check.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll never forget today for the rest of my life.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œThe day you kissed me for the first time, Seita.โ€

โ€œIt was on my forehead, though.โ€

โ€œA first is a first.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t tell anyone, okay?โ€

โ€œIs it just our secret?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆLetโ€™s just leave it at that.โ€

โ€œYeah. Our special secret, just between the two of us.โ€

Rino brought our clasped hands up to her chest.

Nineteen days left until the cultural festival.

Our lips havenโ€™t touched yet.

Even so, the boundary between us had definitely grown thinner than it was yesterday.
