Episode 69 – The Doomed Heroine Doesn’t Trust the Extras

Iโ€™ve Been Reincarnated as the Childhood Friend of a Doomed Heroine. Since I Donโ€™t Want to Get Caught up in Her Bad Ending, Iโ€™ll Make Sure She Ends up Happy

Monday, June 30, the start of the week.

As usual, Ouka is still skipping school.

Iโ€™ve been trying to contact her every day since then, but I havenโ€™t gotten a reply.

In the original story, a casual exchange was supposed to lead to Ouka inviting Akito over to her house, but I guessโ€”since Iโ€™m just a background characterโ€”things arenโ€™t going that smoothly.

Besides, she probably feels she canโ€™t even face me.

If I were to just wait for her at the apartment building entrance, I might be able to see her.

Ironically, I know her address well, and even though sheโ€™s a shut-in, Ouka lives alone with her father.

Itโ€™s hard to imagine she hasnโ€™t stepped outside her home at all for days on end.

โ€”But then again, itโ€™s not quite time for that yet.

Besides, there are other things I need to do first.

โ€œItโ€™s been a while since weโ€™ve all gathered here, hasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

I nodded at Akitoโ€™s words and looked around.

The art room had become something of a hangout spot for me.

Me, Akito, Ujiya, Kisa, Shinori, and Yukimi were gathered around one of the large tables.

Of course, weโ€™d gotten Yukimiโ€™s permission to gather here, but she looked less than pleased.

โ€”Though this is beside the point right nowโ€”why is it that there are never any other Art Club members in this classroom besides Yukimi?

It seems like a dark topic, so I wonโ€™t ask, but it is puzzling.

With that, I got straight to the point.

โ€œAbout Kayaya Chagiriโ€™s s**cideโ€”it was actually a homicide.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

It was Ujiya who let out that exclamation.

Kisa and Yukumi, who knew the circumstances, remained silent, while Akito was speechless.

Shinoriโ€ฆ seemed strangely calm as she waited for the next words.

As if taking my place, Yukumi spoke up this time.

โ€œIโ€™m sure youโ€™ve all already heard this, but Kayaya is a relative of the Sayama familyโ€”politicians. And right now, Iโ€™ve been approached about a marriage proposal involving the eldest son of the Sayama familyโ€”โ€

Yukimiโ€™s report ended succinctly.

Who was pulling the strings this time? Why had things come to this?

She explained everything while omitting unnecessary details.

After that, I finally announced our plan: tomorrow night, the three of usโ€”me, Kisa, and Yukimiโ€”would go and settle things with the Sayama family.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhat about me?โ€

Shinoriโ€™s interjection caused the room to fall silent.

โ€œWhat am I supposed to do in the meantime?โ€

Faced with this perfectly reasonable question, Kisa and I exchanged glances.

Well, itโ€™s true that even if Shinori and the others heard what we just discussed, theyโ€™d probably just say, โ€œOh, I see,โ€ and that would be the end of it.

This meeting was originally set up because Kisa said she wanted to share this information with everyone.

So, I hadnโ€™t prepared anything for Shinori and the others to do.

โ€œThatโ€™s true. Isnโ€™t there anything we can do to help?โ€

โ€œYeah, Iโ€™ll do anything, too!โ€

Hearing Akito and Ujiya speak up, Yukimi and Kisa each changed their expressions.

Yukimi was giving me a testing smile.

It seemed like she was asking, โ€œWhat are you going to do?โ€

Kisa, on the other hand, had a look on her face that was both happy and a bit troubled.

I donโ€™t know what Yukimiโ€™s intentions are, but is she leaving the decision up to me here?

If soโ€ฆ well then.

โ€œThen, Iโ€™d like you to stay with Ao san.โ€

โ€œHuh? โ€ฆEven though Chagiri-kun is dead?โ€

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s exactly why I want to be extra careful. Thereโ€™s always a chance the other soccer team members might attack her.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Akito didnโ€™t seem convinced.

However, I wasnโ€™t letting my guard down just yet.

After all, Iโ€™d actually heard from Chagiri that he had a plan to set Aoiko up, and Iโ€™d been invited to participate.

The way he put it, it could also mean he has an accomplice.

If thatโ€™s the case, itโ€™s better to stay on guard.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s how it is, Iโ€™m down. Things have been a bit gloomy lately, so letโ€™s go out and have some fun for a change.โ€

โ€œSounds good. Aoikoโ€™s been down in the dumps for a while now.โ€

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™ll leave it to you.โ€

At times like this, Ujiya is really dependable.

He makes up for Akito, whoโ€”despite his strong sense of justiceโ€”lacks a bit of initiative.

He lightens the mood, too; heโ€™s the epitome of a socially skilled guy.

Iโ€™m a little jealous.

Just as things were starting to come togetherโ€ฆ

โ€œIโ€™m not really needed there, am I?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

Shinoriโ€™s words left me bewildered.

โ€œWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œWell, if Ujiya and Suga are with Aoiko chan, thereโ€™s no need for me to tag along, right? And if the other side is planning to attack, having more girls there would actually work in their favor.โ€

โ€œI guess youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œAre you planning to send me to such a dangerous place?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Her words sounded strangely like a test, and I was confused.

What on earth is she trying to say?

It was Shinori who asked me in the first place if there was anything she could do.

So I simply suggested what needed to be done.

If sheโ€™s afraid of putting herself in a dangerous situation, she should have just stayed home from the start.

Just then, Shinori laughed.

โ€œThatโ€™s why Iโ€™m staying with you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œHehe, Iโ€™m saying Iโ€™ll come along with you. To the place where youโ€™re meeting thatโ€ฆ Sayama, right?โ€

It was unexpected.

Well, of course, given her personality, itโ€™s exactly the kind of thing sheโ€™d say.

But still, why?

โ€œWerenโ€™t you the one who didnโ€™t want to go to dangerous places?โ€

โ€œThat didnโ€™t mean I didnโ€™t want to get attackedโ€”it meant I didnโ€™t want to put an unnecessary burden on Ujiya-kun and Suga-kun.โ€

โ€œBut even so, why?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you get it unless I say it? Itโ€™s obviousโ€”if I donโ€™t keep an eye on you, youโ€™re bound to do something reckless every single time.โ€

I was speechless.

The pencil case incident with Ami and the others, the stabbing incident that resulted from sneaking around behind the scenes, and the mess with Chagiriโ€”all of them.

Itโ€™s true that those were all incidents where Iโ€™d lost Shinoriโ€™s trust in the past.

ใ€€
Not knowing what to say, I stayed silent, and Shinori laughed.

โ€œBesides, youโ€™d probably be better off with me around, right?โ€

โ€œWhat makes you say that?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s still a secret. It wouldnโ€™t be fair to tell just you, since youโ€™re such a secretive person.โ€

Faced with her barbed remark, I was at a loss for words once again.

Damn it, Shinori is tougher than usual today.

Sheโ€™s cornered me with her logical arguments, so I have no comeback.

I looked around for help, but everyone was giving me lukewarm stares.

As for Yukimi, she looked genuinely amused, the corners of her mouth turned up even higher than before.

What should I do?

I really donโ€™t want to drag Shinori into this.

That said, she seems even less willing to back down today than usual.

โ€œThe other side would probably have a problem if you brought that whole group along, right?โ€

Saying this as a last-ditch effort, Shinori turned her gaze to Yukimi, seeking her opinion.

โ€œI think itโ€™ll be fine. Iโ€™ve already told Sayama that Iโ€™d be bringing a few friends Iโ€™d like to introduce to him.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSenpai, about thatโ€ฆโ€

โ€œUfufu, what are you trying to say? Iโ€™m all for bringing her along, though.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

I was completely taken aback by this unexpected support.

Shinori was staring at me with a satisfied look on her faceโ€”what on earth was going on?

This didnโ€™t seem like the kind of decision Yukimi would make, given how she usually tries to put up walls between herself and others.

โ€œThe fact is, youโ€™re a bit of a loose cannon. Having someone by your side to keep you in check will help you avoid going off the rails, donโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t make it sound like Iโ€™m some crazy hothead. Thatโ€™s really offensive.โ€

โ€œOh, I donโ€™t want to hear that from a junior who always treats me like a serial killer.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Still, that was a strangely cryptic way of putting it.

Could there be some scheme Iโ€™m not aware of?

At this point, there was nothing I could do with my words, so I sighed and accepted it.
