Case 1 – Could it be that my childhood friend is the reason I can’t find a girlfriend?

My Childhood Friend Is Just Too Cuteโ€”I Canโ€™t Have a Normal Relationship!!

โ€œWhy canโ€™t I get a girlfriend?โ€

My first year of high school is over, and as of today, Iโ€™m officially a sophomore.

Iโ€”Makoto Taniguchiโ€”have gotten used to school life to some extent, and suddenly, that question popped into my head.

โ€œMy face isnโ€™t that bad. Iโ€™m not particularly dumb, either. In fact, Iโ€™m smart enough to attend one of the top academic high schools in the prefecture.โ€

I looked in the mirror at my own face.

Reflected there was the face Iโ€™d seen almost every day for the past sixteen years.

Sharp, blue, almond-shaped eyes and a high nose.

My hair was neatly styled and looked clean.

โ€œHmm. Thereโ€™s nothing particularly wrong with my appearance.โ€

After confirming that with my own eyes, I turned my attention to reflecting on my behavior up to this point.

Iโ€™ve always been proactive in helping people in need, and Iโ€™ve tried to treat everyone with sincerity.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIs there something wrong with me?โ€

โ€œWhat are you muttering to yourself all alone first thing in the morning? Youโ€™re gross.โ€

โ€œYou barge into my room without even knocking first thing in the morning, and thatโ€™s the first thing you say? Fumika.โ€

The one who had barged into my room without permission first thing in the morning was my childhood friend, Fumika Akizuki. Weโ€™ve known each other since kindergarten, and sheโ€™s the type whoโ€™s always hurling harsh words at me.

โ€œWell, itโ€™s because you were standing in front of the mirror first thing in the morning, muttering to yourself. Itโ€™s absolutely disgusting.โ€

Her long, translucent black hair flowed as she stared at me with blue eyes as cold as absolute zero. She was looking at me with utter contempt.

I thought that was pretty harsh, considering sheโ€™d just barged in.

โ€œUgh, sorry about that. So? Why did you go out of your way to come to my house? I mean, I locked the door, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œaunt gave me a spare key. So, weโ€™re going to school together.โ€

โ€œYeah, yeah. By the way, I havenโ€™t had breakfast yet.โ€

โ€œIn that case, Iโ€™ll make it for you right now. You just change into your uniform and wait in the living room.โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€

I didnโ€™t hear anything about her giving Fumika a spare key, thoughโ€ฆ

Just how careless is Mom? I was really surprised when she suddenly announced she was going on a long-term world trip with Dad on a whim.

โ€œHas she always been this careless? Thereโ€™s no point in worrying about it. She said she wouldnโ€™t be back for a year anyway. I guess Iโ€™ll just live a carefree life for the next year.โ€

First, I need to change and head to the living room.

If I take too long, Fumikaโ€™ll kick me.

I think she should really work on breaking that habit of resorting to violence so quickly.

After all, Iโ€™m the one who ends up on the receiving end of it.

โ€œMakoto~. Hurry up and come to the living room~!โ€

โ€œI know~. Iโ€™ll be right there.โ€

I quickly changed into my school uniform and went to the living room, where a delicious-looking breakfast was waiting for me.

Toast browned to a golden hue and a fried egg.

Sausages and hot coffee.

It was the best breakfast ever.

โ€œCome on, weโ€™re running out of time, so eat up.โ€

โ€œThanks. Letโ€™s eat.โ€

I clasped my hands together and ate the breakfast Fumika had prepared.

Itโ€™s incredibly delicious.

She used to be hopeless at all household chores, but now she can make meals this delicious.

It makes me feel a little emotional.

โ€œYeah, itโ€™s really delicious.โ€

โ€œYeah. Well, itโ€™s pretty easy, though. Why donโ€™t you try cooking too?โ€

โ€œNo, I can do it, butโ€ฆ itโ€™s just such a hassle. I just canโ€™t bring myself to do it.โ€

Itโ€™s not that Iโ€™m particularly bad at cooking, but I just canโ€™t help finding it a hassle.

Itโ€™d be one thing if I were cooking for someone else, but I donโ€™t want to spend that much time on it just for myself.

โ€œThatโ€™s just an excuse. You canโ€™t cook anyway.โ€

โ€œFine, call it that. Anyway, weโ€™re second-years starting todayโ€”time sure flies.โ€

โ€œYeah. I wonder what our class will be like this year.โ€

โ€œWho knows? Class assignments are something we canโ€™t really influence.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s boring. Donโ€™t you have any thoughts about wanting to be in the same class with someone in particular?โ€

I didnโ€™t know how to respond to that.

There wasnโ€™t anyone in particular I wanted to be in the same class with, but there wasnโ€™t anyone I didnโ€™t want to be in the same class with either. To be honest, I didnโ€™t really care.

I was confident that no matter who I ended up in the same class with, Iโ€™d be able to get along just fine.

โ€œNope. On the flip side, Fumika, is there anyone youโ€™d like to be in class with?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI donโ€™t have anyone either.โ€

Fumika turned her head away with a huff and wouldnโ€™t meet my gaze.

Did I say something that rubbed her the wrong way?

I wasnโ€™t aware of it, but itโ€™d be a hassle if I said anything else and she snapped at me. Better safe than sorry. Iโ€™ll just pretend I didnโ€™t see anything.

โ€œThanks for the meal. That was really good.โ€

โ€œIt was nothing. Well, letโ€™s head to school.โ€

โ€œYeah. Itโ€™d be a pain to be late for the opening ceremony.โ€

Being late for events like that gets you singled out by both teachers and studentsโ€”itโ€™s a huge hassle. Thatโ€™s why I left the house with plenty of time to spare, to avoid being late as much as possible.

โ€œLet me carry your bag. Iโ€™ll hold it.โ€

โ€œI can carry this much on my own, you know.โ€

โ€œCome on. Here.โ€

I took Fumikaโ€™s school bag and carried it along with my own. I was carrying two bags today since I didnโ€™t have any classes, but they were relatively light.

โ€œOh, thanks.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s no big deal. Iโ€™m doing this because I want to, anyway. More importantly, the cherry blossoms are really beautiful, arenโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œYeah. I actually really like this row of cherry trees.โ€

โ€œMe too. It really makes me feel like spring is here, you know?โ€

Fumika, walking beside me, had a serene expression on her face. Sheโ€™d be incredibly cute if she always looked this serene.

โ€ฆWell, actually, itโ€™s fine if she looks scary sometimes, but Iโ€™d prefer it if sheโ€™d stop with the harsh words.

โ€œI know what you mean. Moments like this are nice, arenโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œYeah. I feel like we had a conversation just like this last year, too.โ€

โ€œWe might have. But itโ€™s fine to have this kind of conversation every year, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYeah. Well, letโ€™s hurry up and head to school. Iโ€™m curious about the class assignment results, too.โ€

After passing through the row of cherry trees and walking a short distance, we could see the slightly futuristic, glass-walled school building of Tenju High School, affiliated with Tenno University, where we attend.

Itโ€™s a school Iโ€™ve gotten used to over the past year.

โ€œSo, shall we go check the bulletin board?โ€

โ€œSure. Iโ€™ll carry my own bag from now on.โ€

โ€œGot it. Here you go.โ€

As I handed Fumika her bag, we headed toward the bulletin board where a crowd had gathered. Iโ€™m pretty tall, so I can just barely see the board, but Fumikaโ€™s on the shorter side, so she probably canโ€™t see it.

โ€œCan you see the bulletin board?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI can see it.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lie. You definitely canโ€™t see it.โ€

โ€œAre you calling me short?! Donโ€™t call me short!!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say that. Stop being so paranoid. Want me to carry you?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆJust kidding. I donโ€™t need you to do thatโ€”Iโ€™ll be able to see it if I just go up front.โ€

Pouting angrily, Fumika walked off toward the front of the bulletin board. Sheโ€™d always been self-conscious about her short stature, and it seemed that hadnโ€™t changed.

โ€œWhich class am I in?โ€

Looking at the bulletin board, it appeared Fumika was in Class 1. I casually scanned the Class 1 roster and found my name listed a little below the middle.

โ€œSo weโ€™re in the same class this year. Well, I guess Iโ€™ll just have to make the best of it.โ€

I hoped I could get through school life while keeping a proper distance so as not to upset her too much.

โ€œWait, Alice is in the same class too?โ€

At the very bottom of Class 1, I spotted a familiar name.

Alice Watanabe.

Like Fumika, sheโ€™s a childhood friend Iโ€™ve known since kindergarten. By the way, as her name suggests, sheโ€™s half-Japanese and has beautiful, vibrant blonde hair.

โ€œMakoto, weโ€™re in the same class, arenโ€™t we?”

โ€œYeah. And Alice is in the same class too. Itโ€™s like all my childhood friends are here.โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆTch.โ€

โ€œDid you just click your tongue?โ€

โ€œWhat? No, I didnโ€™t. I wouldnโ€™t do something like that.โ€

Iโ€™m pretty sure she definitely did, though.

Did she really hate being in the same class as me that much?

Nah, Iโ€™d better stop thinking about it.

Itโ€™d be pretty sad if she really felt that way.

ใ€€โ—‡

โ€œGood morning~ Makoto! And Fumi-chan, too!โ€

โ€œGood morning, Alice. Youโ€™re as energetic as ever today.โ€

โ€œHehehe~ Being energetic is my best trait, after all!โ€

The one who came running up to me like a puppy the moment I entered the classroom was my childhood friend, Alice. She had eye-catching, vibrant blonde hair that fell just past her shoulders, and her deep crimson eyes, fixed on me, were so beautiful I felt like I might get sucked right in.

Unlike Fumika, she was on the taller side at about 165 centimeters, making her one of the tallest girls in the class.

โ€œGood morning, Alice. You really are always full of energy, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œWell, yeah! I was just so happy to be in the same class as the three of you!โ€

โ€œAlice, youโ€™re such a sincere and nice person. Fumika should take a cue from you.โ€

โ€œWhat exactly am I supposed to learn from her?โ€

โ€œher cheerful side, Alice. Youโ€™re such a grouch.โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆ Do you want me to kill you?โ€

Fumika gave me a look as if I were a piece of trash.

Even though I was really just giving her advice with the best of intentions.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

I decided to just apologize flat out.

If I didnโ€™t, she might just kick me.

โ€œGood morning, Makoto. Youโ€™re still getting along great with those two, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œGood morning, Yamato. Well, weโ€™re childhood friends, after all.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m jealous. To have such cute childhood friends.โ€

โ€œReally? Itโ€™s actually surprisingly hard to get along with them, you know?โ€

You never know when Fumikaโ€™s mood will sour or what will set her off. Alice is way too energetic, and Iโ€™m constantly being dragged around by her.

โ€œEven so, man. Iโ€™d love to have cute childhood friends like that, too.โ€

โ€œSo, the grass is always greener on the other side, huh?โ€

โ€œMaybe. But Makoto, donโ€™t you ever think about dating those two?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™ve never really thought about it.โ€

Those two are, after all, just childhood friends.

Nothing more than that.

Thatโ€™s how I see it.

โ€œSo, you donโ€™t want a girlfriend right now?โ€

โ€œNo, actually, I was seriously thinking this morning about why I canโ€™t get a girlfriend.โ€

โ€œI see. Youโ€™re in deep trouble, man.โ€

โ€œHuh? What do you mean by that?โ€

โ€œFor example, what do you think of that girl over there?โ€

Saying that, Yamato pointed to a black-haired female student in the classroom. Even if you ask me what I think, isnโ€™t she just a regular girl?

โ€œIsnโ€™t she just an ordinary girl?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSheโ€™s the kind of girl whoโ€™s really popular with the guys at school and gets called cute. And you just called her โ€˜ordinary.โ€™โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat are you trying to say?โ€

โ€œIn other words, the girls you hang out with. To put it bluntly, because your two childhood friends are way too cute, youโ€™ve become incapable of having a normal romantic relationship.โ€

โ€œW-What!?โ€

S-so youโ€™re saying I canโ€™t get a girlfriend?

To go through all this high school life and not be able to get a girlfriendโ€”is that really okay?

โ€”No!!

Thereโ€™s no way thatโ€™s okay.

โ€œHow do you think you can have a normal relationship?โ€

โ€œFor starters, how about putting some distance between you and those two? Or maybe dating one of them?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d prefer the distance option, please.โ€

โ€œWell, then, why donโ€™t you just do that?โ€

Oh, right! So I just needed to put some distance between myself and those two! I hadnโ€™t realized that at all.

โ€œAll right! This year, Iโ€™m definitely going to get a girlfriend whoโ€™s insanely cute!!โ€
