Case 4 – A Blind Date Kept Secret from My Childhood Friend

My Childhood Friend Is Just Too Cuteโ€”I Canโ€™t Have a Normal Relationship!!

Time has flown by surprisingly fast since I became a sophomoreโ€”a whole week has already gone by.

Iโ€™ve been keeping up with my classes just fine, and my relationships with people are going really well.

โ€œIf I could just get a girlfriend, Iโ€™d have nothing to complain about~โ€

My plan to distance myself from the two people I talked to with Yamato hasnโ€™t progressed at all.

On the contrary, just a week ago, I received a ridiculous threat from Alice.

โ€œWhy are you looking so gloomy? Did something bad happen or something?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not exactly that. Iโ€™m just thinking, โ€˜Life is tough, huhโ€ฆโ€™โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean? Thatโ€™s definitely not something someone your age should be thinking about.โ€

โ€œI guess youโ€™re right. Iโ€™m kind of jealous that you donโ€™t seem to have many worries, Fumika.โ€

โ€œAre you making fun of me? Iโ€™ll punch you, you know?โ€

She shot me a freezing glare. Iโ€™d just spoken my mind, but apparently, she didnโ€™t like it.

Actually, even though she said sheโ€™d punch me, sheโ€™d already kicked me.

โ€œUmโ€ฆ could you please stop kicking me?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t punch you, so itโ€™s fine, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œWhat an absurd argument.โ€

I feel like Iโ€™m about to cry.

โ€œAnyway, letโ€™s hurry up and eat lunch.โ€

โ€œOkay, okay. By the way, donโ€™t you have any friends, Fumika?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ll kill you.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

She glared at me so intensely that I realized this was a topic I shouldnโ€™t bring up any further, so I apologized profusely and had lunch with Fumika.

By the way, Fumikaโ€”who (apparently) was asked by my mom to look after me once I entered my second yearโ€”has been making my lunch.

It tastes amazing. I could eat it every day.

โ€œSeriously, you should at least make your own lunch.โ€

โ€œWell, I could make it, but itโ€™s just such a hassle.โ€

โ€œThere you go again. You know you canโ€™t actually make it.โ€

โ€œWell, whatever. Itโ€™s really delicious, though. Thanks for making it for me every day.โ€

Since she can make such a delicious lunch, Fumika will probably make a great wife someday. Yeah, I hope she finds happiness.

โ€œW-well, itโ€™s no big dealโ€”itโ€™s easy enough. B-but I donโ€™t mind the compliment, though.โ€

โ€œIt really is delicious. Thanks, as always.โ€

Eating a delicious bento really lifts my spirits. Iโ€™m truly grateful.

If something comes up next time, Iโ€™ll try to help Fumika.

โ€œMakoto~ Can I talk to you for a sec? Oh, were you in the middle of eating your bento?โ€

โ€œI just finished. Anyway, is something up?โ€

โ€œYeah. I was wondering if youโ€™d join me for practice if youโ€™re free. Itโ€™s totally fine if you canโ€™t, though.โ€

โ€œNah, I want to get some exercise after eating, so Iโ€™ll join you. Anyway, Iโ€™m off, Fumika.โ€

Fumika turned away, looking a bit sulky, but since she didnโ€™t tell him not to go, Alice followed her to the gym.

โ€œFumi-chan is so amazingโ€”she can even cook! Maybe I should learn too?โ€

โ€œIt canโ€™t hurt to know how to cook, so why not ask her to teach you?โ€

โ€œHmm. By the way, Makoto, if you had to choose between a girl who can cook and one who canโ€™t, which would you rather marry?โ€

Once they arrived at the gym, Alice asked him that question while dribbling a basketball.

He hadnโ€™t really thought about it much before, but hmm.

โ€œEither oneโ€™s fine, I guess. Itโ€™s appealing to have a girl who can cook make me meals, and it sounds fun to cook for a girl who canโ€™t, too.โ€

โ€œI see. Can you cook, Makoto?โ€

โ€œI can do it just fine. Iโ€™m not super skilled or anything, though.โ€

Iโ€™ve made sure to learn enough about cooking and housework to get by, so itโ€™s no problem.

I consider myself capable of living on my own to a certain extent.

To begin with, if Mom hadnโ€™t asked Fumika to look after me, I was planning to handle all the housework myself anyway.

โ€œThen, teach me how to cook sometime!โ€

โ€œI think Fumika would be a better teacher, though.โ€

โ€œI want you to teach me, Makoto. Is that okay?โ€

Iโ€™m a softie when she says things like that.

Thereโ€™s no real reason to force myself to say no, so why not?

โ€œSure. Iโ€™ll teach you next time.โ€

โ€œYay! You promised, okay?โ€

โ€œOkay, okay. But if weโ€™re going to practice, letโ€™s get started soon. We donโ€™t have that much time, after all.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re right. So, one-on-one, then. You can go first, Makoto.โ€

With that, she tossed me the ball.

I dribbled it, tried to get past Alice, and headed for the basket, but sheโ€™s a basketball team member after all.

There was no way I could break through that easily, and she snatched the ball right out of my hands.

โ€œYouโ€™ve still got a long way to go, Makoto. You canโ€™t aim for the world with skills like that, you know?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not aiming for that. Seriously, youโ€™re really good.โ€

โ€œWell, I practice every day. If I lost to an amateur, itโ€™d be a total blow to my pride.โ€

โ€œTrue. So, next time, Iโ€™ll be on defense.โ€

Spreading my arms wide, I faced off against Alice.

Her dribbling form was so beautiful that I found myself mesmerized for a split second.

She capitalized on that moment, easily breaking through my defense and sinking a shot.

That was way too fast.

โ€œPhew~ I win!โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t stand a chance from the start, though.โ€

โ€œWell, shall we play a little more?โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

From then on, until lunch break ended, Alice and I kept playing one-on-one basketball.

The result? Of course, I lost every single game. Damn it.

ใ€€โ—‡

โ€œSo, you got completely crushed by Alice.โ€

โ€œWell, yeah. Thereโ€™s no way I could win against a pro.โ€

โ€œI guess youโ€™re right. Are you heading home right away today?โ€

โ€œNo, Iโ€™ve got something to do, so you guys go ahead and head home first.โ€

After school, with all classes finished, all that was left was to go home.

Alice headed off to club activities early, while Fumika and I were getting ready to leave in the classroom.

โ€œW-well, if itโ€™s just shopping or something, Iโ€™d be happy to tag along?โ€

โ€œNah, Iโ€™m going out with Yamato. Weโ€™re eating dinner out tonight, so Iโ€™m good.โ€

โ€œGot it. Have fun.โ€

โ€œHey-hey!โ€

As if heโ€™d timed it to coincide with Fumika leaving the classroom, Yamato called out to me.

โ€œAre you two living together or something?โ€

โ€œWhy would you think that? Sheโ€™s just coming over to make dinner.โ€

โ€œSheโ€™s like a โ€˜commuting wifeโ€™.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make fun of me so much. Anyway, letโ€™s get going.โ€

Iโ€™m going out with Yamato today.

But itโ€™s not just a casual hangout. Yamato set me up on a group date with girls from another school.

โ€œCome on, donโ€™t get so worked up. The mixer isnโ€™t going anywhere, is it?โ€

โ€œStill, try to understand how excited I am about this.โ€

โ€œSince that time, I havenโ€™t been able to keep my distance at all. Did you even try to?โ€

โ€œI did! But before I knew it, one of us was always right next to the otherโ€”what could I do?โ€

Even when I try to keep my distance, they both crowd in on me, so thereโ€™s nothing I can do about it.

Thatโ€™s exactly why I had Yamato set up a mixer with girls from other schools this time.

โ€œIโ€™m totally jealous, but I guess itโ€™s not the same for you. Well, letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

And so, with my arm around Yamatoโ€™s shoulder, I headed toward the family restaurant where the mixer was being held.
