Case 6 – The Childish Friend Who Won’t Open Up and the Childish Friend Who’s Too Open

My Childhood Friend Is Just Too Cuteโ€”I Canโ€™t Have a Normal Relationship!!

โ€œHmm, would Alice really do something that outrageous?โ€

Iโ€™m curious and interested in what she was up to.

But if I find out, Iโ€™ll probably end up learning something truly outrageous, so maybe itโ€™s better not to pry.

โ€œIs this what they call Pandoraโ€™s box?โ€

The Alice I know is always smilingโ€”she gives off the impression of being a bright, cheerful, and hopelessly honest person.

I just canโ€™t imagine that kind of Alice doing anything strange.

โ€œSo even with a childhood friend, there are still plenty of sides I donโ€™t know about, huh?โ€

I canโ€™t possibly believe Fumika is lying.

She may be harsh with me, but sheโ€™s not the type to tell lies that would bring others down.

Sheโ€™s serious and has a strong sense of justice.

โ€œHmm. โ€ฆSo, does that mean I wonโ€™t be able to get a girlfriend during high school?โ€

Apparently, if I hang out with girls I donโ€™t know, who knows what Alice might do.

But then again, if I donโ€™t try to meet new girls, I wonโ€™t be able to get a girlfriend as things stand.

โ€œThis situation is pretty much a dead end. I have no idea what to do.โ€

I feel like things are getting more and more complicated, but thereโ€™s no point in dwelling on it here.

Itโ€™s not like thinking about it is going to solve anything anyway.

โ€œActually, our parents are seriously no good.โ€

I heard a little while back that Alice and Fumikaโ€™s parents went on a trip around the world with my parents, too.

Well, I do get my allowance regularly, so I canโ€™t really complain.

โ€œLeaving teenage girls all alone like thatโ€ฆโ€

Wait, maybe that way of thinking is outdated in todayโ€™s world. Still, Alice and Fumika are both cute girls, so I canโ€™t help but worry.

โ€œThough I guess itโ€™s a bit hypocritical of me to say that.โ€

Is it too nosy for a mere childhood friendโ€”not even a boyfriendโ€”to worry that much?

โ€œWhat are you doing, muttering to yourself all alone? Thatโ€™s creepy.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re as sharp-tongued as ever, Fumika-san.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because youโ€™re always doing creepy stuff. Anyway, hmmโ€ฆโ€

Pink pajamasโ€”I think theyโ€™re called loungewear, right?

Short-sleeved top and shorts that end above the kneesโ€”sheโ€™s showing quite a bit of skin.

I am, after all, a teenage high school boy. Doesnโ€™t she have any sense of caution?

Or maybe I should take it as a sign that she trusts me.

โ€œYeah, yeah. Should I start by drying it off?โ€

โ€œYeah. But if you scrub it roughly, Iโ€™ll kill you. A girlโ€™s hair is delicate, so please be gentle.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re quite the high-maintenance princess.โ€

Usually, when I do it myself, I just scrub it vigorously. Well, if thatโ€™s what she wants, I guess I have no choice.

I gently pat her hair to blot away the moisture.

Maybe itโ€™s because she just got out of the bath, but she feels different from the usual Ayaka, and my heartโ€™s racing.

She smells sweet and nice, and Iโ€™m starting to get all flustered.

This isnโ€™t good. I need to stop thinking weird thoughts and focus on drying her hair.

โ€œMakoto, why do you want a girlfriend so badly? You werenโ€™t that type back in the day, were you?โ€

โ€œHmm, if you ask me โ€˜why,โ€™ Iโ€™d have a hard time answering. But now that Iโ€™m finally in high school, isnโ€™t it normal to want to live the kind of youthful life you see in anime and stuff?โ€

โ€œI wonder if thatโ€™s true. Iโ€™ve never thought about it that way, so itโ€™s a feeling I donโ€™t really understand.โ€

If asked exactly what I want, itโ€™s hard to put into words.

But this is my high school life, after all. Even if I canโ€™t say itโ€™s exactly like the youth you see in fiction, the truth is, I want to live a life thatโ€™s at least similar to that.

โ€œWell, of course. Fumikaโ€™s cute, serious, and good at housework, so you probably wonโ€™t have any trouble finding a boyfriend.โ€

โ€œC-cuteโ€ฆ? Makoto, youโ€™re not exactly ugly yourself, are you?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s kind of embarrassing to be complimented by Fumika all of a sudden. Thanks. It doesnโ€™t feel bad to be complimented, though.โ€

Thereโ€™s no way I wouldnโ€™t be happy to be complimented on my looks by my childhood friend, whoโ€™s so stunning herself.

โ€œHmph. I just said what I thought.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not very honest.โ€

Seeing Fumika suddenly turn her face to the side, I genuinely think that.

But that gesture is so typical of Fumika that I canโ€™t help but laugh.

โ€œWhatโ€™s that supposed to mean? Anyway, hereโ€™s the hair dryer.โ€

โ€œGot it. Let me know if it gets too hot or hurts.โ€

I took the hair dryer from Fumika and started drying her hair. Unlike my own, it was silky smooth and felt amazing to the touch.

Thatโ€™s proof she takes good care of it on a daily basis.

โ€œHey, Makoto.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s up? Was it too hot?โ€

โ€œNo, thatโ€™s not it. What kind of girl would you like to date?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s with the sudden question?โ€

โ€œJust answer me.โ€

What kind of girl is my typeโ€ฆ?

Hmm, I donโ€™t really care that much about looks.

As for personality, I donโ€™t think thereโ€™s anything specific Iโ€™d say is โ€œperfect.โ€

โ€œIf I had to pick, Iโ€™d say someone whoโ€™s fun to be around.โ€

Thatโ€™s definitely the most important thing. No matter how pretty she is, if sheโ€™s not fun to be with, the relationship probably wonโ€™t last.

Iโ€™m the type of guy who, if Iโ€™m going to date someone, wants to take it all the way to marriage.

โ€œHuh, really? Your standards are surprisingly low.โ€

โ€œAre they? I donโ€™t think there are many girls who fit the bill, though.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œYeah. To be honest, out of everyone Iโ€™ve met so far, the only ones I can think of who meet those criteria are Fumika and Alice.โ€

Fumika has a sharp tongue, but she looks out for me, and I have a lot of fun when weโ€™re together. Alice also gives me a boost of energy when Iโ€™m with her.

โ€œWell then, โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œSorry, did you say something?โ€

Since I was using the hair dryer, I couldnโ€™t quite make out what Fumika was saying.

โ€œNever mind. Anyway, thatโ€™s enough. My hairโ€™s dry now.โ€

โ€œGot it. Well then, I think Iโ€™ll head home. It wouldnโ€™t be good to stay too late.โ€

It doesnโ€™t look too good to the outside world when a guy is constantly hanging out at a girlโ€™s place, especially since she lives alone.

With that in mind, I stood up and started to leave Fumikaโ€™s place at a brisk pace.

โ€œThanks for today. See you tomorrow.โ€

โ€œYeah. See you tomorrow. Good night, Fumika.โ€

โ€œGood night, Makoto.โ€

Fumika smiled and saw me off to the front door.

On my way home, I thought to myself that our conversation sounded a bit like that of a newlywed couple.

Then, I took a bath and fell right asleep.

ใ€€โ—‡

โ€œMakoto~ Wake up already~ Come on!โ€

โ€œHmm?โ€

My body was shaken back and forth, forcing me awake.

Thinking it must be Fumika doing this, I managed to pry my eyelids openโ€”and there, right in front of me, was a beautiful blonde girl beaming with a huge smile.

โ€œGood morning, Makoto.โ€

โ€œGood morning, Alice. So, whatโ€™s going on here?โ€

Alice was lying on top of me as I lay on my back. Because of that, we were pressed very closely together, which made me feel a little weird.

Plus, something soft and squishy is pressing against my chestโ€ฆ

My heartโ€™s racing like crazyโ€ฆ?

Arenโ€™t they being a little too vulnerable?

Both Fumika and Alice. I guess itโ€™s a sign of their trust in me.

โ€œEhehe~ I came to learn how to cook!โ€

โ€œDidnโ€™t you have school today?โ€

โ€œYeah. But I suddenly felt like learning today. So thatโ€™s why I came over!โ€

โ€œโ€˜Thatโ€™s whyโ€™โ€ฆ itโ€™s super early in the morning, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œNo, noโ€”donโ€™t you ever think I might try to take advantage of you?โ€

Seeing how completely unguarded my childhood friend was, I felt compelled to give her a word of warning, so I said thatโ€ฆ

โ€œIf itโ€™s you, Makoto, I wouldnโ€™t mind being taken advantage of. Actually, Iโ€™d probably welcome it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Just as I was trying to figure out if she was joking or not, Alice leaned her face close to mine.

I glanced at the clock by the bedโ€”it was 5:00 a.m. It was definitely early morning.

โ€œBy the way, Makoto, did you meet up with anyone?โ€

โ€œHuh? No way. I was sleeping until just a little while ago.โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ I guess so. But I smell something on you Iโ€™ve never smelled before. Is it another girlโ€™s scent?โ€

โ€ฆThis is super creepy. Sure, I went to a mixer yesterday, but Alice shouldnโ€™t know about that. Plus, I took a proper shower yesterday, so there shouldnโ€™t be even a hint of that scent left.

โ€œI-itโ€™s probably just your imagination. I didnโ€™t meet anyone in particular. The only person I saw was Fumika.โ€

โ€œNo, this scent isnโ€™t Fumi-chanโ€™s, you know~ You werenโ€™t on a date with some other girl, were you?โ€

Alice, who was sitting on top of me, stared intently into my eyes. Her deep red eyes fixed on me as if piercing right through me.

โ€œNo way. Look, Iโ€™m going to cook, right? Iโ€™m going to change, so wait for me in the living room.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t add up, but I donโ€™t have any proof. Okay, got it. Iโ€™ll be waiting, so come back soon~โ€

After Alice left the room, I let out a sigh and quickly changed my clothes.

My heart was pounding like crazy, but I decided to ignore that for now.

โ€œThat was really scary.โ€

Even if I do meet up with a girl, Iโ€™ll make sure Alice never finds out.

Thatโ€™s what I thought from the bottom of my heart.
