Case 7 – An Empty Fridge and Taking Care of My Childhood Friend

My Childhood Friend Is Just Too Cuteโ€”I Canโ€™t Have a Normal Relationship!!

โ€œSo? Iโ€™m totally fine with teaching you how to cook, but what do you want to make? We wonโ€™t have time to make anything too elaborate starting now, you know?โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ Maybe miso soup would be good!โ€

โ€œMiso soup, huh? Thatโ€™s easy. Okay, Iโ€™ll get everything readyโ€”just wait a sec.โ€

When I opened the fridge, there were absolutely no ingredients inside.

โ€ฆThatโ€™s right. Since Fumikaโ€™s been cooking for me lately, I havenโ€™t had a chance to check whatโ€™s in the fridge.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? Is there a problem or something?โ€

โ€œWell, yeah. Thereโ€™s this huge problemโ€”the fridge is completely empty.โ€

โ€œThen we canโ€™t cook!โ€

โ€œSorry about that. I made you come all this way so early in the morning for nothing.โ€

With nothing in the fridge, thereโ€™s no way I can cook. Even if I went shopping now, no supermarkets would be open at this hour.

โ€œItโ€™s okay. I just barged in on my own anyway. So, what should we do?โ€

โ€œIโ€™d like to be prepared, so please let me know next time youโ€™re coming over.โ€

โ€œGot it! Hmm, doesnโ€™t look like thereโ€™s anything I can do here anyway. Iโ€™m going to head to school ahead of you! I want to do my morning practice.โ€

โ€œGot it. Sorry about that.โ€

โ€œWell then, I want you to apologize to me for one thing~โ€

It does feel a bit high-handed of her to barge in uninvited and then demand an apology. But since I canโ€™t deny that I wasnโ€™t prepared, I guess Iโ€™ll do what she asks.

โ€œAnything I can do is fine.โ€

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ How about you ruffle my hair for me? Itโ€™s been a whileโ€”I havenโ€™t had a chance like that since I started high school.โ€

โ€œWell, okay. Is that really all you want?โ€

โ€œYeah! I really, really love it when you ruffle my hair.โ€

She flashes me a beaming smile, and I canโ€™t help but smile back. Alice really does give me so much energy.

Itโ€™s so heartwarming.

โ€œOkay. Come over here.โ€

โ€œOkay!โ€

I had Alice come closer, and I ran my fingers through her dazzling blonde hair. Just like when I ran my fingers through Fumikaโ€™s hair yesterday, a girlโ€™s hair really does feel amazing to touch.

โ€œHehehe. Thanks. That cheered me up! Iโ€™m off to morning practice~โ€

โ€œOh, okay. Do your best.โ€

Alice flashed a smile as bright as a blooming flower and dashed out of my house. Sheโ€™s just as energetic as she used to beโ€”itโ€™s really reassuring to see her like that.

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ If I go back to sleep, I probably wonโ€™t be able to wake up, and Iโ€™ll end up being a burden. Fumika might seem like that, but sheโ€™s actually really considerate, so Iโ€™m sure sheโ€™d forgive me even if that happened.โ€

I donโ€™t really want to be a burden to Fumika. Precisely because sheโ€™ll forgive me no matter what I do, I donโ€™t want to make her angry too much.

โ€œWhat should I do?โ€

I looked around my room, but it wasnโ€™t messy or anything like that.

There wasnโ€™t really anything in particular I needed to do.

โ€œMaybe Iโ€™ll do some weight training.โ€

Iโ€™m way too bored. But if I go to sleep now, Iโ€™ll end up being a bother to Fumika. If Iโ€™m working out, I wonโ€™t fall asleep, and itโ€™ll kill some time.

โ€œYeah, I guess this is what they mean by โ€˜killing two birds with one stone.โ€™โ€

So I ended up working out for a little over an hour.

ใ€€โ—‡

โ€œMakoto~ Are you awake~?โ€

โ€œAh, Fumika. Good morning.โ€

โ€œGood morningโ€ฆ Wait, whoa, why are you shirtless!?โ€

โ€œI was working out. Hey, why is your face so red?โ€

Fumika came into the house, her face bright red, and kept her distance from me. Huh? Whatโ€™s with that reaction? That actually hurts a bit.

โ€œHey, hurry up and get dressed.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Itโ€™s kind of sad that sheโ€™s keeping her distance like that.

Thinking that, I slipped my arms into my school uniform. I wasnโ€™t sweating that much, so I figured itโ€™d be fine just like this.

โ€œSo? Why are you up this early? Youโ€™re not exactly a morning person, are you?โ€

โ€œWell, Alice came by this morning. Thatโ€™s what woke me up.โ€

โ€œAnd what does that have to do with working out?โ€

โ€œI was thinking, โ€˜If I go back to sleep, I might not be able to wake up again.โ€™ Thatโ€™s why I was working out.โ€

Fumika gave me a look of contempt, but I just brushed it off. If I were hit with a lethal dose of contempt first thing in the morning, my life would be in danger.

โ€œHaaโ€ฆ I mean, why did Alice come over this early anyway?โ€

โ€œI promised her the other day that Iโ€™d teach her how to cook. So, she just showed up first thing this morning.โ€

โ€œBut there arenโ€™t any ingredients in Makotoโ€™s fridge, are there?โ€

โ€œAh, right. So I decided to have her come another day.โ€

โ€œI wonder why she decided to learn to cook from Makoto. Iโ€™m way better at cooking than he is.โ€

Fumika puffed out her cheeks in slight displeasure and turned her head away with a huff.

Even that gesture looked cute to me. It made me realize once again just how cute Fumika really is.

โ€œCome on. I said the same thing. Apparently, she wants me to teach her. I donโ€™t know why, though.โ€

โ€œHaa. Well, thatโ€™s just like her. So, Makoto, are you going to eat breakfast?โ€

โ€œAre you going to make it for me?โ€

โ€œI brought some ingredients from my place.โ€

Fumika, her face still flushed, said this as she held up a plastic bag.

Since thereโ€™s nothing in the fridge, Iโ€™m really grateful.

โ€œThen, Iโ€™d appreciate it.โ€

โ€œGot it. Iโ€™ll make it right away, so please wait for me in the living room.โ€

Fumika immediately put on an apron and started making breakfast in the kitchen. Watching her like that, I couldnโ€™t help but wonder if this is what it would be like if I got married someday.

โ€œI absolutely have to find a girlfriend.โ€

Before marriage, I need to focus on finding a girlfriend. As I clench my fist and think about that, I hear a strange clang coming from the kitchen.

โ€œFumika? Are you okay?โ€

โ€œUh, yeah. Iโ€™m totally fine.โ€

Fumika, crouched in the kitchen, replies with an awkward smile, but no matter how I look at her, she doesnโ€™t seem fine at all.

โ€œSorry about this.โ€

โ€œW-what are you doing all of a sudden? Thatโ€™s sexual harassment.โ€

โ€œWell then, go ahead and sue me later.โ€

I rushed over to Fumika and placed my hand on her forehead. It was quite hot. When I first saw her, I thought her face was red because I was shirtless, but apparently that wasnโ€™t the case.

โ€œYou have a fever. Why did you push yourself to come over?โ€

โ€œB-butโ€ฆ Makoto canโ€™t manage without me.โ€

โ€œHaa. Iโ€™m glad you feel that way, but you donโ€™t need to push yourself like this.โ€

Iโ€™m happy that Fumika feels that strongly about me, but I donโ€™t want her to push herself.

โ€œB-butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œNo โ€˜buts.โ€™ For now, youโ€™re staying home from school today. Iโ€™m taking the day off too.โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€™ll be a burden to Makoto.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not a burden, so donโ€™t worry. Here we go.โ€

I picked up Fumika, who was curled up on the floor, and carried her to the bed in my room for now.

Alice has already left for school, so I canโ€™t count on her.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Makoto.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t apologize. Weโ€™re here for each other when times are tough, right? I carried you to my bed for now, but if youโ€™d rather be in your own room, Iโ€™ll take you there.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s okay. Iโ€™ll stay here. Thanks.โ€

โ€œGot it. What about your clothes? Itโ€™s gotta be uncomfortable to sleep in your school uniform, right?โ€

Fumika is currently wearing her school uniformโ€”a brown blouse and a red skirt. If she sleeps in this outfit, itโ€™ll get wrinkled, and more importantly, she wonโ€™t be able to rest properly.

โ€œThen lend me some of your clothes, Makoto. Just a T-shirt and shorts will do.โ€

โ€œGot it. Um, itโ€™s right here, right?โ€

He left the room after placing a short-sleeved T-shirt and shorts on the bed.

A little while later, after getting permission to come back in, he entered the room again.

โ€œThanks. Iโ€™ll go change.โ€

โ€œSure. By the way, are you hungry? Iโ€™ll make something.โ€

โ€œYeah, I am. But Makoto, you canโ€™t cook, can you?โ€

โ€œI can, I can. Got it. Iโ€™ll go pick up some stuff at the convenience store. Is there anything in particular you want?โ€

โ€œI might want some pudding.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll get some. I plan to be back soon, but give me a call if anything comes up.โ€

I guess Iโ€™ll just have to go to the convenience store to buy some groceries first. We donโ€™t have any medicine or cooling patches at home. Iโ€™ll just pick those up while Iโ€™m at it.

With that in mind, I hurriedly left the house.
