“Oh…the cake…”

Miyabi checked inside the plastic bag that had been bitten by the dog and looked very sad.

The plastic bottle of juice was fine, but the cake in the soft plastic case had been crushed beyond recognition by the dog.

She felt as if her heart had been torn apart. Tears slowly welled up in her large, round eyes.

Seeing Miyabi about to cry, the boy said,

“Come with me for a moment. It’s right over there.”

The boy took Miyabi’s hand. Her heart raced. She felt embarrassed.

But thanks to him, the tears that had been about to spill over suddenly subsided.

The boy led her to a stylish-looking café.

A sign read “café de HINATA.”

Miyabi wondered how to read it.

“Café de Hina…?”

“It’s ‘Café de Hinata.’ This is my parents’ store. It just opened the other day.” “

“Wow…that’s nice.”

“Wait here for a moment.”

He left those words behind and went inside the store. After a while, he came back holding a small paper bag.

“Here, take this.”

He handed her a very stylish and delicious-looking fresh chocolate cake.

“Eh? Is it okay? What about the money?”

“Yeah. My mom said that if you like it, you can come back and buy it again. So you don’t need to pay today.”

“Thank you.”

His smiling face was dazzling with his pearly white teeth.

And on that day, that boy, whose name she didn’t know, became a hero to Miyabi.

Miytabi went home and ate the cake from “Café de Hinata.”

It was rich but had a very gentle flavor.

It was just like him, the girl thought.

After that, when she became a middle school student, Miyabi visited Café de Hinata several times and bought cake.

Sometimes she would see the boy from that day inside the store, but whenever that happened, her heart would race, and she couldn’t bring herself to enter the store.

She would watch him from outside the store and feel a bittersweet ache in her chest.

She waited until he wasn’t there, went inside, bought a cake, and went home.

—This is love.

It’s strange to fall in love with someone I’ve never spoken to since he saved me from the dog…

I think so, but every time I see him, my heart flutters, and he sometimes pops into my head in my daily life. When that happens, I feel very happy.

Even though I could only watch him from afar, this is definitely love.

Miyabi thought so.

She had visited the store several times when she was in middle school, but in the end, she never spoke to him.

And then Miyabi became a high school student.

In the middle of her first year of high school, Café de Hinata suddenly closed.

The notice on the storefront only said, “Due to circumstances,” so she didn’t know the exact reason. But the wording made it clear that this was not a temporary closure, but a permanent one.

She would never be able to taste the cakes from her favorite store again.

And she would never see the face of her hero, whom she had occasionally glimpsed, ever again.

The shock she felt was immense.

But life went on.

She did her best not to show her sadness to others and successfully completed her first year of high school.

Then came the class reshuffle in her second year.

When she saw a certain boy in her new class, she felt an electric shock run through her body.

The boy from “Café de Hinata” was there.

She never thought he would attend the same high school.

Perhaps they had crossed paths during the first year.

But she had only watched him from afar for so long, and even if she had seen him grown up, she probably wouldn’t have recognized him.

Seeing him up close in the same class and overhearing him talking with other boys about how his family used to run a café made it click.

—It was definitely him.

But he didn’t seem to remember Miyabi.

Still, being able to see him every day, even from a distance, made Miyabi incredibly happy.

Miyabi’s feelings for him reignited and grew rapidly.

But Miyabi was very shy. She couldn’t bring herself to tell him how she felt, let alone mention that he had helped her back then.

Then, a few months ago, “Café de Hinata” suddenly reopened.

A wonderful idea came to Miyabi’s mind.

Miyabi had always wanted to work part-time. Her best friends, Rinrin and Suzuka, also wanted to work part-time, and they had talked about wanting to work at the same place if possible.

So, could she work part-time at “Café de Hinata”? That way, she could definitely get closer to him.

She could pretend she didn’t know it was his family’s place.

With that in mind, she visited “Café de Hinata.” After confirming that Yuuhi wasn’t at the storefront, she bought a cake and casually asked his father if they were hiring part-time staff.

Things went according to Miyabi’s plan. Thanks to that, the distance between her and him had closed significantly.

Seeing Yuuhi up close, he was just like the hero she had seen that day.

He was kind and would risk his body to protect girls without any ulterior motives.

The more time she spent with him, the more her feelings grew.

She started to wonder if it was time to confess her feelings.

“No, no, t-that’s impossible…”

Just thinking about it made her face turn bright red. There was no way she could actually confess.

—So Miyabi thought to herself.

“There’s still plenty of time. There’s no need to rush. I want to take my time, get closer to Akizuki san, and eventually make him fall in love with me.”

She kept that thought hidden in her heart.

But today at work, something really caught her attention.

After closing time, Yuuhi and Rinrin were alone in the changing room for a while.

What were they doing together?

Could they have been kissing…?

“No, no, that’s impossible.”

Yuuhi and Rinrin don’t seem to be dating at all.

It’s hard to imagine those two serious people kissing if they’re not even dating.

“It’s fine…right?”

That’s what Miyabi told herself.
