Episode 65 – Shift revolt

I Was Supposed to Be Giving Love Advice on the School Radio, but Before I Knew It, the Beautiful Girls at School Were Hitting on Me

A few days had passed since our first meeting, and we were now at Bianca, a coffee shop located a short distance from the school. The shop was bustling with customers who had heard about it through word of mouth and social media, and I was busy working as usual.

“Excuse me, Manager, can I have a word?”

When the shop had quieted down a bit, I called out from behind the kitchen. A large man who was preparing cakes turned around.

“Hmm? Is something wrong, Kageyama kun?”

“Um, I was wondering if I could change my shift a bit.”

“Sure, but that’s unusual. Do you have something important to do?”

“Well, actually, I ended up becoming a member of the cultural festival committee, and their meetings are overlapping with my shifts.”

I didn’t even think he would refuse, but it still felt a bit awkward. However, the manager nodded without a hint of displeasure, dispelling my hesitation.

“Sure, no problem. Do you know the specific dates?”

“Y-yes ! I know all the dates for this month !”

The kind giant smiled at me and walked over to the counter where the shift schedule was kept. He took a notebook from the shelf and pulled out a pen from his pocket.

“So, where should I make the changes?”

“Well, basically, I’d like to change the Tuesday shift.”

“Hmm, Tuesday…”

“I think the executive committee has a meeting every Tuesday.”

There was a moment of silence as the manager jotted down a draft with a mechanical pencil.

“I see…how about this?”

“Yeah, I think that should be fine.”

“Wait, but isn’t there a meeting for club activity representatives next Thursday? Is it okay for Kageyama senpai not to attend?”

“…I’m sorry, next Thursday needs to be changed too.”

“Okay, that’s fine.”

“You’re such a scatterbrain, Senpai.”

The bob-cut junior snorts smugly.

“Never mind how you know my schedule so well…thanks, Makino.”

There were plenty of things to point out, but I’m an adult. I’ll put aside the fact that I was standing there waiting for her when she came to the counter, and just express my gratitude for now.

“You’re welcome ! Seriously, you should be able to manage your schedule without me, right?”

“…I know.”

I brush off the junior, who doesn’t seem too bothered, with vague words, and look at my schedule again. Well, this is…

“There’s also a weekly radio show, right? That’s an incredibly packed schedule.”

“….I’ll manage somehow. I’m still in my teens, after all.”

As I replied with a touch of bravado, a wet sound came from behind me.

“Boy….the stamina of a teenager is nothing more than an illusion of youth…”

“Eek.”

The person placed a firm hand on my shoulder. The atmosphere was so strange that Kinami, who was standing in front of me, let out a short scream. It was our very own Bianca employee, Miharu san, who is also known as the representative of useless college students.

“Miharu san…how many points did you lose today?”

Miharu san kept one hand on her hip and made a peace sign with the other.

“…20,000 points?”

“No, I lost both rounds in a row.”

“50,000 points, huh?”

“Don’t sigh like that.”

Miharu san shook me back and forth while still holding onto my shoulder. I’ve never seen this person look so happy about mahjong.

“Miharu san, why don’t you quit since you’re not good at mahjong?”

“Boy ! Are you trying to take away a college student’s duty !?”

“Isn’t a college student’s duty to study…?”

As I was playfully teasing Miharu san as usual, I noticed Kinami standing blankly in front of the counter. In an instant, I remembered the time when Miharu san and I had talked about mahjong and ruined her mood.

I pulled Miharu san away and hurriedly tried to comfort my silent junior.

“Ah, Makino, you don’t understand mahjong, do you?”

“Ah, that’s right, I’m sorry, Konamin.”

“No, no, it’s totally fine.”

However, Makino responded to our concern with a smug expression.

“Just hearing the two of you having a fun conversation makes me happy, so it’s okay.”

Miharu san and I let out exclamations of admiration at her ease, which was different from what we’d seen before.

“…Wow, Konamin, you’ve grown up.”

“That’s right ! I’ve become an adult over the summer break !”

Makino (14) puffs out her small chest. In another era, she would have been considered an adult, but she still has the same innocent smile.

“Grown-up, huh…”

As I wonder what to say, Kinami suddenly lowers her eyes and looks at me with a seductive gaze.

“…Right, Senpai?”

“Huh?”

“Hey, didn’t you make me an adult, Senpai? I won’t let you forget that.”

“Eh, um…”

I immediately understood what Makino was referring to. However, this wording was too ambiguous. But it was also somewhat accurate, making it difficult to comment…

But seeing this situation, Miharu suddenly smiled cynically.

“I see…a summer fling, huh?”

“I don’t know what you’re thinking, but I’m pretty sure that’s not it.”

“Sorry, Konamin. I’m being clingy with your beloved.”

Miharu san slowly removed her hand from my shoulder. No, that’s not it. But Makino nodded deeply with a knowing look on her face.

“It’s okay, I’m a broad-minded person.”

“What’s your position here?”

I’m the one being touched, so it’s not your place to give permission. But Makino glared at me.

“But just because I’m broad-minded doesn’t mean you can flirt with anyone at the executive committee.”

“I won’t. What do you think I am?”

“Really? Are you sure no one in your class has already fallen for your charms?”

“Shirahama? No way, I think she hates me.”

I vaguely recall the conversation I had with her during our first meeting. Makino seemed surprised by my response, as if it was unexpected.

“Oh my, did you do something to make her hate you?”

“Nothing. We’re practically strangers. The only time we’ve talked was at the gathering the other day.”

“…Isn’t that a problem since you’re classmates?”

Really? Half the girls in my class are like that. Seeing me secretly hurt, Makino let out a sigh of relief.

“Well, personally, I’m glad that kind of girl and Senpai don’t get along.”

“Why? Support my smooth school life !”

“No way.”

Makino stuck out her tongue. I looked at Miharu san, hoping for some adult guidance, but…she was still grinning and showed no signs of stopping. She’s no help.

“…Well, I’m going back to the kitchen, so you take care of the customer.”

I can’t rely on anyone else. Seeing a customer come in, I quickly returned to my post.

“Ah, just a moment before that…”

Muttering those words, Kinami steps over the counter, passes by me, and heads to the back of the kitchen.

“Is that for the manager?”

In response to my question, Makino turned around and looked my way, her beautiful eyes widening as she gave me an expression that seemed to say it was obvious.

“Yes, I’d like to change shifts.”
