Episode 71 – Shirahama’s determination

I Was Supposed to Be Giving Love Advice on the School Radio, but Before I Knew It, the Beautiful Girls at School Were Hitting on Me

The empty classroom was deserted. It was my second time coming here after school, but this classroom facing the playground still echoed with the voices of the sports clubs.

“…….”

It was even more so when the person who called me here remained silent. I waited for a while, but Shirahama just stared at the floor without looking at his smartphone, fidgeting nervously.

“…So, what do you want? I don’t have time.”

“Wait a minute ! I’m not ready yet…”

Shirahama stiffened when I spoke to him. After looking around nervously, she took a deep breath as if she had made up her mind.

“…I’m sorry about that time.”

“……”

I didn’t respond.

“I thought that Kageyama was just giving casual love advice and embellishing it to make it interesting for the radio. …But I was wrong.”

“…I see.”

“Until now, I was annoyed that my classmates were talking about love advice, so I deliberately didn’t listen, but I actually listened to the radio the other day. Then…I realized that you

were seriously engaging with the listeners.”

As if releasing the emotions pent up inside her, Kitahara spoke slowly, as if convincing herself with each word.

Shirahama exhaled again and stared at me with determined eyes.

“I don’t actually have a boyfriend. And I like Aihara senpai.”

“…Is that so?”

“Stop it, don’t be so considerate now.”

I tried to act like I was seeing her for the first time, but Shirahama saw right through me. I was at a loss for words, but Shirahama laughed dryly.

“…When I was in middle school, there was a senior I liked. It was the first time I had ever truly liked someone, and I didn’t know how to approach him. So, I consulted with a girl who had a lot of experience in love. She seemed happy to be asked for advice and gave me all kinds of advice with great enthusiasm.”

“Huh, that’s a nice one.”

“Yeah, it is.”

Shirahama took a deep breath, as if to dismiss the topic.

“……Then, the next day, everyone in the class knew about it.”

“!”

I couldn’t help but hold my breath……was this just a typical girl’s quarrel? Either way, I felt like I shouldn’t say anything carelessly.

“I heard later that the girl also liked the same person. Since I didn’t know anything about love games, I was embarrassed to be the subject of rumors, and my relationship with the senior ended.”

“I see…”

“At that time, I decided that love should never be known to others, and I would never consult anyone about it.”

I see…I had always thought Shirahama was prickly from the moment we met, but that was the reason…

“So, why did you tell me this?”

“As I said earlier, I realized it while listening to your radio show. There are people who will seriously listen to love advice. But I said such horrible things, so I thought it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t at least say this much…”

Shirahama took another deep breath, fidgeting.

“I’m sorry for hurting the radio show that’s so important to Kageyama. You don’t have to forgive me, but I wanna apologize…I’m really sorry !”

Shirahama bowed her head deeply, her voice trembling. …I’m not used to this kind of situation, so all I can do is scratch my head and sigh.

“It’s okay.”

“Eh?”

Shirahama slowly raised her face, her eyes filled with disbelief.

“I-is it okay?”

“Shirahama, you had your reason, so don’t bow your head.”

“K-Kageyama…”

Besides, it would be awkward to stay angry, and since I promised the president that we would make this the best cultural festival ever, it only makes sense to forgive her. Yes, I repeat to myself to convince myself.

“I was too harsh, so let’s just agree that we both had our faults.”

“…….(blank stare)”

Shirahama hadn’t expected to be forgiven, and she opened her mouth slightly, looking dazed. The silence was awkward, and just as I was about to say something, Shirahama spoke up.

“Kageyama…you’re a good guy !”

“Eh?”

“I was prepared to be hated, but you forgiving me is too generous !”

“No, I understood that you had your own reason too…”

“Well, even if you say that, it’s still someone else’s circumstances. It’s not unreasonable to say that it’s not a reason to blame yourself. …That’s amazing. I really respect you.”

The tension seemed to have eased, and Shirahama spoke rapidly. She moved closer to me, and I took a step back.

“Ah, thank you…”

“Kageyama is such a nice guy, and I said such horrible things to him…I don’t know how to apologize…”

Actually, she seems to have gone from being tense to being high.

“It’s okay, you don’t have to apologize. As long as you can do your job properly…”

“No, that won’t satisfy me.”

Shirahama, who seems surprisingly loyal despite her appearance, stops me with one hand and starts grumbling. After a while, she suddenly seems to think of something and claps her hands.

“Okay ! It’s decided ! I’ll support Kageyama and the president’s romance !”

“Wait a minute, how did it come to that?”

However, ignoring my confusion, Shirahama approached me with determination and took both my hands in hers. I couldn’t shake her off because she was too strong.

“Don’t fret, I won’t tell anyone that Kageyama is interested in the president, and if Kageyama finds it annoying, I’ll back off. Is that okay?”

“Well, I guess so…..”

In fact, it was a clear line drawn by Shirahama, who had had a bad experience consulting about love before.

“No, that’s not what I meant !”

“Huh? What?”

“I don’t mean that I like the president…I do respect her and admire her, but…”

“I get it, I really do. Love can start with admiration. I feel that way about Aihara senpai too.”

This guy…even if we make up, there’s a different kind of annoyance… But if I deny it here, she might misunderstand and think I’ve been heartbroken, which would be a hassle…

After some internal conflict, I let go of Shirahama’s hand and made up my mind.

“Well, that’s how it is. I don’t want the president to find out, so please keep it a secret.”

“‘Course ! I’ll guarantee it !”

I accepted it lightly, but I made sure to keep Shirahama in check. Well, at least this way, I won’t have to deal with unnecessary questions…

However, Shirahama, who had no idea about my inner thoughts, reached out her hand with a big smile.

“Well, let’s both do our best, Kageyama !”

“Alright, Shirahama…”

I weakly shook her hand back, and Shirahama gripped my hand tightly with her unchanged smile.

“Alright, then let’s have a meeting together after we finish the work with the president !”

“Oh, okay…”

I nodded, feeling overwhelmed by Shirahama’s energy. Once freed from Shirahama, I hurried toward the president’s office as if escaping.
