Episode 9

I Drink Every Night With a Lookalike of a Popular Idol on the Riverbank

The usual riverbank. The usual lemon flavor. The usual distance of two cans.

Nanase and I sat side by side without talking about anything in particular.

Even when we don’t talk, it doesn’t feel awkward.

The night breeze feels nice.

โ€œโ€ฆIt’s quiet on the other side of the river, isn’t it?โ€

I muttered quietly as I gazed at the small lights of the residential area visible across the river.

โ€œHmm. On this side, the road is close, so there’s always noise.โ€

Nanase-san answered quietly, looking in the same direction.

Taking her words as a cue, I listened carefully.

The constant sound of cars driving by. In between, I could hear the distant clatter of a train.

โ€œOh, a train.โ€

โ€œYeah, it is.โ€

โ€œI can hear the cries of corporate slaves.โ€

โ€œWell, that’s a harsh way to put it.โ€

โ€œAre you pretty much a white-collar worker, Yousuke?โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆ the pay is decent, I guess.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆ but it’s too busy, you know.โ€

In harmony with Nanase’s voice, the sound of insects chirping could be heard from the grass at our feet.

โ€œHey, Yosuke. What kind of insect is that?โ€

โ€œI don’t knowโ€ฆ It’s just an insect.โ€

Nanase took out her smartphone and started recording the sound. She then fed it into an AI app to ask what kind of sound it was.

โ€œDid you figure it out?โ€

โ€œI don’t know what kind of insect it is.โ€

โ€œI guess the recording wasn’t clear enough.โ€

โ€œShould I go record it againโ€ฆ Nah, it’s too much trouble.โ€

The two of us listened intently to the sound of the unknown insect.

This time, we heard someone laughing loudly in the distance, riding on the sound. The laughter reached in fragments, carried by the wind.

โ€œThere are some people who seem to be having a lot of fun.โ€

โ€œWell, it might just be one person playing two roles.โ€

โ€œA crazy person is approaching!?โ€

โ€œHahaโ€ฆ This is bad. We have to run away.โ€

Nanase sat firmly with her butt planted on the ground and drank from a can. Probably, she had no intention of running away.

โ€œSomehowโ€ฆ When we do this, we can hear all kinds of sounds.โ€

When I said that, Nanase nodded.

โ€œYousuke, do you have any favorite sounds?โ€

โ€œSounds?โ€

โ€œYeah, sounds. Other than squishing or popping sounds.โ€

โ€œIf I had to pick one here, it would be more dangerous than a crazy person playing two rolesโ€ฆ Hmmโ€ฆ I like the sound of a pencil writing on paper.โ€

โ€œA pencil?โ€

“Yeah, not a ballpoint pen or mechanical pencil, but a pencil. That scratchy sound, like โ€˜sari sariโ€™ or โ€˜kari kariโ€™โ€ฆ Hearing that sound somehow calms me down.”

โ€œHahaโ€ฆ Are you a literary genius?โ€

โ€œNo. I work at a stationery manufacturer. I use it when writing proposals or coming up with ideas for work. It feels like the sound of a new idea being born. Like the sound of zero becoming one.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆZero becoming one.โ€

Nanase repeated my words softly.

โ€œHmmโ€ฆ That’s nice. It’s beautiful.โ€

She said that and smiled gently.

โ€œWhat about you, Nanase? Do you have any favorite sounds?โ€

She looked up at the night sky, thinking for a moment. Her profile, without a cap, was faintly illuminated by the distant streetlights.

โ€œSounds I likeโ€ฆโ€

She muttered that, then smiled slightly, as if amused.

โ€œThe sound of a camera shutter, maybe. Like, โ€˜click, click!โ€™โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

I couldn’t help but ask her to repeat herself.

โ€œThe sound of a shutter? That’s unusual. I thought most people didn’t like it.โ€

When I said that, she nodded and said, โ€œMaybe so.โ€

โ€œBut, you knowโ€ฆ doesn’t it feel like โ€˜this moment is being capturedโ€™?โ€

There was a hint of pride in her voice.

โ€œDo you like being photographed?โ€

“Hmmโ€ฆ yes, I do. I also like cheering. Like an earthquake. It’s a sense of unity.”

โ€œLike at a live concert?โ€

โ€œYeah, exactly.โ€

Nanase leaned her elbows on her knees and smiled at me.

โ€œDo you like going to live concerts, Nanase? Like bands?โ€

Nanase suddenly stumbled.

โ€œHeheโ€ฆ Yeah, that’s right. as expected Yosuke.โ€

โ€œWhat’s as expected about itโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWell, you’re right, Yosuke.โ€

I don’t understand what she means, but I guess she’s complimenting me.

โ€œWellโ€ฆ I’m embarrassedโ€ฆโ€

Nanase smiled gently as she watched me scratch my head.

โ€œSo, Nanase, are there any sounds you don’t like?โ€

โ€œSounds I don’t like?โ€

She furrows her brow slightly.

โ€œThe sound of a chalkboard being scratchedโ€ฆ That’s the only one that gives me goosebumps.โ€

โ€œEveryone feels that way.โ€

โ€œYeah. It makes my defenses drop.โ€

โ€œAre you a Pokรฉmon, Nanase-san?โ€

โ€œHmm. What type?โ€

โ€œBasically Fairy, but sometimes Ghost and Dark show up.โ€

When I answered honestly, Nanase smiled happily.

โ€œHmm. That’s good. An honest answer.โ€

That smile, beyond the shutter sound, was more natural and beautiful than any forced smile.

I still knew nothing about her real job or her true feelings.

I felt our mysterious relationship deepening little by little in the night breeze.
