During lunch break, I was waiting at our usual spot when Kana showed up.
“It’s fine, it’s fine. What happened?”
Kana’s classroom is closer to this spot than mine, so she’s usually waiting before I arrive. Today, though, she was unusually late.
By the way, as for Saki and Miku, it seems they’re having lunch with female classmates today.
Miku was always admired by the girls and relied on a lot, and while Saki was shy, it wasn’t like she didn’t have female friends either. So it wasn’t unusual for them to have lunch with classmates sometimes.
Well, friendships are important, after all. Lately, the two of them had been coming to this spot all the time anyway.
Of course, Kana was definitely included in that. In Kana’s case, she always has three female friends she hangs out with in class. It seems she’s told them she’s dating me, and they understand that situation.
And those girls have been in the same class since first year of middle school, have been close friends ever since, and are apparently very discreet. They won’t spread the word about our relationship themselves, but they’re okay with telling people they want to tell.
Well, Kana’s a good girl, so I guess her friends are good girls too. All three of Kana’s girl friends seem to be supporting our relationship… or so she says. I’ve never even met them, though.
So, that’s why Kana comes here every day.
Just as I was thinking that, Kana spoke up.
“Um, about that thing… Actually, ever since I got to school, my classmates kept asking me all sorts of questions, and it took a while to wrap things up…”
She does look a bit tired… I thought, but is that really the reason? And what exactly are her classmates asking her?
“Asking you what?”
“About my studies…”
“Schoolwork?”
“Yes. Actually, I ranked 50th in the grade on this test, so they asked things like, ‘How do you study?’ and ‘You did the same last time, so how come your scores suddenly shot up?’”
I see… Well, before, Kana was probably easier to count from the bottom up, and she was barely scraping by. Compared to that, her recent progress must look like amazing growth to everyone else. No wonder people are curious. And Kana’s already supposedly the most beautiful girl in the school (at least in the junior high building), so she’s the kind of kid who gets noticed.
Well, her looks are so outstanding she could be a heroine in a game, so getting attention is only natural.
Wait, 50th place? Seriously… With 350 students in Kana’s grade, that definitely puts her in the top tier.
I figured she’d be fine, but this is beyond what I imagined.
“I see, so that’s why you’re a bit tired?”
“Yes… If I’d just said, ‘Seito-senpai taught me!’ I’d have caused even more of a commotion. And if I said, ‘Miku-nee and Saki-nee taught me,’ they’d just say, ‘But that’s normal for you, right?!’ But I really had no other way to answer… Plus, it’s been since I entered middle school that I’ve been bombarded with questions like this… I only managed to get out of it by getting help from the girls I’m usually with…”
“You must be exhausted. Still, 50th place is seriously amazing.”
“I really wanted to tell you more cheerfully, I’m sorry. But hearing you say that, Seito-senpai, really cheers me up!”
“Yeah, it’s rare to see Kana looking so down.”
“Yeah, exactly. So since I’m feeling low today, I’ll let Senpai cheer me up.”
Kana, sitting next to me, said that, leaned her head on my shoulder, and spoke again.
“Hey, Senpai…”
“What is it?”
“Summer break starts the week after next. Do you have any plans, Senpai?”
Come to think of it, that was true.
I hadn’t really thought about it, but summer vacation starts after next week’s school ends.
Well, like I’d have any plans or anything.
“No particular plans, I guess.”
“That’s good to hear. Then let’s hang out a lot this summer, all four of us.”
The four people Kana mentioned were obvious.
But thinking about it, I definitely want to take things further with Miku before summer vacation. I really need to make an effort this Saturday.
