Episode 34 – For whom the radio plays

I Was Supposed to Be Giving Love Advice on the School Radio, but Before I Knew It, the Beautiful Girls at School Were Hitting on Me

One day at lunchtime, with only two weeks left until summer vacation.

Even lunch break is noisy, but as the countdown continues toward summer vacation, I can clearly feel the tension of everyone’s tension knob getting twisted.

“Pa-pe-pi-pu-pe-po-pa-po !”

It’s hot today so I’ll take a quick approach and skip the Uirouri act and just finish with voice training.

“It’s too hot after all…….”

The room is so hot that my breath feels cool.

The broadcasting room has thick curtains hung around the windows to prevent sound from leaking out, but for some reason they’ve painted the entire room black, making it like a steam bath in the summer.

“I should at least open a window…….”

I decided that there would be no problem until the broadcast started, and opened the thick glass window. What’s with this double soundproofing, surely either one would have been fine.

When I open the window, a rush of air enters the room. Some cool air enters, creating a supreme space between the curtains and me.

“Hey Kageyama, how are you doing….?”

Probably Sensei came in, but I don’t care, don’t mind her.

I continue to be exposed to the cool (compared to usual) breeze.

“Hey, I can see your legs.”

With an irritated voice, the curtains are opened with a bang.

The air that had been separated by the curtains begins to mix with the air.

“Hot !”

“What are you ignoring me for?”

When I turned around, I saw Mashiro sensei standing there with a sour look on her face.

“Sensei, please don’t disturb the people who are enjoying the cool weather.”

“It’s not like this room is particularly cool…”

“Then please turn on the air conditioner in this room, I’ll get a heat stroke.”

“Do you think a new teacher has that kind of authority?”

Sensei sat down on a pipe chair close at hand while making a disgusted sound. She was flapping a fan with fireworks printed on it.

“The fan doesn’t cool me down at all……”

“It’s useless if it doesn’t cool the room, where did you get it?”

“Hm? I got it from a lady in the shopping street who was giving them out today.”

“I see, that’s why it got fireworks pattern……”

It’s hard to see from a distance, but it’s most likely an advertisement for a local summer festival. It’s such a big announcement that it’s hard to believe it’s a local festival.

“Fireworks, right……”

But for some reason, Sensei looked unhappy.

“Ah, you don’t seem to like fireworks…..”

“Oh, you know exactly what I mean, Kageyama.”

“No, well, I’ve known Sensei for a short time……”

Considering Sensei ‘s excitement, it’s not hard to imagine that there are landmines buried in the fireworks.

Sensei lightly flicks the firework side of the fan onto her forehead.

“Fireworks are just loud, there are usually so many people around, and if you go somewhere with fewer people you can’t see the fireworks properly in the mountains !”

Ah, here we go. No matter what I say, she won’t stop.

“Moreover, most of the couples who come to see the fireworks are just using the fireworks as an excuse to see their partner’s face, right? If so, they should just enjoy themselves at home.”

“It’s already hot in this room, so please don’t make it damp.”

“Ah, I hope all the couples who come to see the fireworks will have their eardrums ruptured…….”

“Please don’t say such a scary thing, even if you’re joking…….”

With that said, Sensei began to wave her fan.

“But fireworks……”

Up until now, when my sister and her friends went to festivals together, I would tag along as a guardian. I didn’t have anyone to go with, so I didn’t really think it was a problem until then…

The only thing that comes to my mind is my (tentative) date with Kitahara the other day. Maybe I can expect a little more this year…….

“There’s some smell of naivety in the air……”

A dark voice, as if crawling up from the depths of hell. I turned my head to see Sensei staring coldly at me while fanning herself with a fan. That’s not the kind of look to give to a student.

“Kageyama, you look like you’re having a lot of fun today.”

“Well, that’s right. It’s summer vacation, and people get excited.”

“No, last year you were rather down because you couldn’t do the broadcast.”

“I don’t deny that.”

“Are you…perhaps in your youth? Yes, this definitely smells like youth.”

What is the smell of youth? Is it like the taste of lying?

“Oh, when you say naivety, don’t you mean over here? Here, letter !”

To divert the conversation, I lifted the stack of letters on the desk. It was a rather heavy pile to lift with one hand.

My strategy seemed to have worked, and Sensei’s gaze shifted to the desk.

“……The number of papers has increased a lot since July began.”

“Summer vacation is coming soon, and I think everyone is getting excited.”

“Aww, everyone’s getting so excited…….”

Sensei stretched her body while still sitting in her chair, then stood up and came over to me.

“Is all of this today’s letter?”

“Yes, just for this week. I’ve got a mix of love advice and the usual.”

“I see…..”

Sensei took a sheet of paper on the desk and looked through it quickly.

“You’ve done really well since then, Kageyama.”

“What’s gotten into you?”

“Well, I thought I should praise the students in my club every once in a while.”

“…Thanks.”

I’m kind of embarrassed when this person gives me a compliment head on….. It makes her look like a nice person. Even though she’s hoarding the yakisoba bread at the school cafeteria.

“Are you thinking of something rude?”

“No, not in the slightest.”

“The speed of your reaction is suspiciously fast, though…..”

Sensei looked puzzled, but ended the conversation.

“Everyone who writes to you is your fan, so be proud.”

“You’re right……”

The word “fan” made my spine straighten involuntarily.

Sensei flipped through the top few sheets of the stack of letters.

“I knew these guys were at the top of the list.”

“I don’t know how to say it, but I just don’t feel at home unless I do this.”

At the top of the stack of letters are the usual three.

Matcha powder, Kombu Wakame, and……Deltora Forest.

As this radio has become more and more popular, I have a habit of putting his or her letters at the most visible places.

“I’m sure these guys will be very pleased with their service as veterans.”

“No, no, I’m the one who’s grateful. This is like a good luck charm for me.”

“A good-luck charm?”

“Yes, it’s a good luck charm to remind me that no matter how popular I become, I’ve always had the support of these people.”

“……You’re still as stupidly serious as ever on the radio, Kageyama.”

“Stupid is unnecessary.”

As I’m saying that, my phone alarm goes off. It’s time to start broadcasting.

I sit down on the seat where the microphone is placed and let out a breath. The equipment is already turned on. I play the usual opening, timing it just right. There is no tremor in my fingers on the fader.

I count to three in my mind and slowly lower my fingers. It is hot outside, but my mind is calml.

Just as I finish my small deep breath, the volume goes to zero. With a click, the microphone is turned on, and the sound is pleasant.

Hello” everyone, this is the noon broadcast of July 11 !”

Today, too, I will hold the microphone.

As long as I have even one fan, I will continue to talk in front of the microphone.
