Episode 37 – Final Boss? Battle

I Was Supposed to Be Giving Love Advice on the School Radio, but Before I Knew It, the Beautiful Girls at School Were Hitting on Me

And then the fateful moment arrives.

After school, when all the classes were over, I was standing alone in the broadcast room. The broadcast room, which I visit only occasionally after school, is covered with blackout curtains. Because of this, I can barely feel the setting sun shining through.

“Phew…..”

When I take a deep breath, I shiver.

“It’s fine, this is a warrior’s tremor…….”

I intentionally say this out loud to calm myself down. But the sound of the clock ticking away the time is strangely clear.

I think about taking another deep breath, but then.

Knock-knock-knock.

Three polite knocks. The time was right on time.

“! ……Come in !”

Behind the thick door, I can already feel a shadow, or perhaps an aura.

I tried my best to hide my nervousness and called out to the other side of the door.

With a creaking sound, the door opened at a steady pace.

“I’m sorry to disturb you.”

With a polite tone of voice, the person enters the broadcast room with a leisurely step.

“Welcome, President Saionji.”

The president smiled at my polite greeting without any confusion.

The broadcasting room, which was supposed to be my home, was instantly transformed into her space.

“I don’t have a big chair, but you can sit there.”

“Thank you.”

With a light pressure on her skirt, the president sat down on the desk chair.

“I didn’t know they had chairs like this in the broadcast club.”

“I can’t let the president sit in a pipe chair.”

By the way, the president was right, there were originally only pipe chairs in this room.

The teacher graciously offered me her own desk chair for this occasion.

…I was met with some curious looks when I carried my desk chair from the staff room, but that was just collateral damage…

Whether she knew about my struggles or not, she looked satisfied.

“Shall we begin then? Club survey.”

“Please……”

The president smiled lovingly at me as my body stiffened a little.

“Don’t be so nervous. It’s not like we’re trying to get rid of the broadcasting club or anything.”

“Get rid of it…when I hear that from a senior, it sounds pretty heavy…..”

“That’s regrettable, I just came to talk.”

Senpai looked really disappointed. But I didn’t change my stance. The person I was facing was the president. There’s no point being too cautious…

As I stared at her, President Saionji sighed as if she had given up.

“Kageyama kun doesn’t seem like talking, and I have an obligation to report, so shall we get started? Activity investigation.”

“Yes, please……”

I nodded quietly, and Senpai, looking deeply disinterested, pulled out a notebook from her breast pocket.

“Erm, so……first of all, how many members are in the club?”

“I’m the only one.”

“I see you’ve been gaining popularity lately, but you haven’t really added any new members, have you?”

“Yes, unfortunately.”

“The new students have no interest either.”

“Well, isn’t radio hard to get into?”

To be honest, I was hoping for a recruiting effect, but I haven’t received any such calls.

Even though it should be a hot topic, my workload just keeps increasing.

……I think I should try to recruit properly at this time.

As I was lost in thought, Senpai glanced up from her notebook.

“I’ll continue, okay?”

“Y-yes !”

“Next, what have you accomplished in your club activities this semester?”

“I don’t have any specific accomplishment, but I think we’ve gained a lot of support from the students in the form of letters.”

“Well, I have mixed feelings about it being that popular though.”

“Eh?”

“No, it’s nothing. Forget it.”

Saionji senpai exclaimed in a voice that sounded both impressed and disappointed.

“……”

“……”

I wait for the next question, but Saionji senpai simply flips through her notebook.

I spent a lot of time staring at her.

“I guess that’s about it from the teachers……”

The president murmurs something and suddenly begins to write something in her notebook.

Watching her lazily, yet smoothly, writing in her notebook, I had a strong sense of déjà vu.

Oh, this is it ! It’s the same one the seniors in the broadcasting club use when they list all the things that are wrong…..

I’m alone, freaking out, wondering what kind of words are going to come out of this.

After a few moments of writing, the notebook was closed with a heavy thud.

“Okay, that’s the end of the departmental activity survey then.”

“Eh? Is it over already?”

“This is just a formality.”

The president shook her notebook, which she had been diligently writing in, next to her face.

“I never thought even the student council president would do that kind of thing…..”

“I’m the student council president to be a role model for the students. I have no intention of satisfying a teacher’s ego.”

“Oh……”

Soft but strong eyes with a strong will.

I see, so this charisma is President Saionji’s strength… I’m honestly impressed.

“Do you understand Saionji Chihaya a little better?”

“Yes, on the contrary, I’m more afraid…..”

“Oh, what a shame.”

The president, not seeming disappointed at all, laughed softly and put her notebook back in her pocket.

The next moment, when Senpai was empty-handed, her soft eyes lit up for a moment.

“Then, let’s get down to business.”

“The main topic, is it…..”

“It seems you’ve received a lot of letters this week again.”

Senpai picked up the letter that had somehow been placed on the desk and began flipping through it.

W-when did you……

“The trust of the students, the ability to handle this number of sheets alone……after all, I want it.”

The sticky sound of “I want it” sends shivers down my spine, like a frog being stared at by a snake.

But I desperately tried to pull myself together as I was about to get scared. I remembered the words I had exchanged with my teacher back then. Yes, this is for my sake and that of my seniors…

“Senpai.”

“Yes? What is it, Kageyama kun?”

Senpai looked up from the letter with a satisfied look on her face. She no longer looked listless as she reported on the activities earlier, but looked genuinely satisfied, which made me a little sad.

“I know I’m repeating myself, but no matter how many times you ask me out, I have no intention of lending a hand to you.”

“Are you planning on taking the initiative this time? I know I should be the one to say it, but why don’t you just give up already?”

“No, I’m serious this time.”

When I said this in a determined manner, she raised her eyes. The sharp, penetrating gaze, as if a sniper was aiming at me.

“The atmosphere is quite different today.”

“Yes, I heard you were coming here today, so I’ve prepared myself very well.”

“Fufu, I’m honored.”

Senpai remains calm throughout. On the contrary, I prefer that for her to be the same as always.

Senpai aligns the edges of the paper, places it on the desk, then glances over at me.

“Then, let’s negotiate.”

“No. like I said…….”

“What do you want? I’ll do whatever I can get my hands on as Saionji and student council president.”

“I don’t need that kind of thing……”

“Oh !”

The president clapped her hand. Her eyes were no longer on me.

“Would you like to make this radio more widely known? Or would you prefer a more direct increase in club expenses……? Yeah, I could talk them into expanding your facilities. I’ve always thought the microphones here are of poor quality…….”

“Prez !”

Since I had shouted at the president who was chattering away, she froze for a moment, but her attitude quickly returned to normal.

“Forgive me, I got a bit excited… But I’m being honest with you. If you join the student council, we’ll do our best to support you, and we’ll improve the facilities for you…”

“No, thank you.”

Before the president’s speech can pick up the tempo, I stop it with a snap. The president looks a little surprised.

“…..Kageyama kun, I seem to have gone a little deaf. May I ask you to repeat that?”

“I told you that I have no intention of accepting any of your charity.”

“W-why? The broadcasting club’s budget and facilities are not limited. Isn’t it careless and lousy for you to run it by yourself…….?”

Senpai looked like she didn’t really understand. Looking at her, I started to feel a bit irritated. Whatever, I’ll just tell her what I think.

“It’s not because it’s poor quality, but I’ve been working hard in this room with these facilities. I don’t have the luxury of outsiders criticizing it.”

“But, I’m sure it’s not a bad deal for you either…….”

Senpai is clearly upset. Her eyes are looking back and forth between me and the equipment.

“Certainly, if you look at it objectively, your suggestion may be a good one. But there’s something I can’t give in to.

“……T-then, are you saying that you should remain inconvenienced? If you join hands with the student council, even the budget can be used freely to some extent. We can make this broadcast even better, you know?”

The president’s words have lost their usual high spirits. However, with what she just said, I now firmly understood why I could not accept her proposal.

The reason why I don’t understand the president’s words, that is……

“In the first place, I don’t like the idea of settling everything with money !”

“……! ! !”

Senpai shoots herself against the back of the chair as if shot through.

“F-fufufu……”

The president turns over and lets out a deranged laugh I’ve never heard before. Then, she immediately sat up. After her body stopped shaking, she looked upward.

Oh no, did I say that a little too harshly….? No, but that’s how I really feel…….

No matter how hard I try to shake it off, I can’t get rid of the feeling of regret.  I thought I had made up my mind when I talked to her, but I still feel attached to the president when it comes to the most important thing.

“It’s not……at all.”

“Eh?”

With her eyes fixed on the sky, the president began to speak in a babble.

When I reflexively asked her again, she glared at me. Her eyes were filled with anger, but they also looked a little tearful.

She then took a deep breath in and let it all out from the pit of her stomach.

“It’s not like I want Kageyama kun at all !”
