●Nanashima Tsubasa (side)

“Finally, it’s over.”

I said that after class ended.

Ever since I was in junior high school, I’ve never been able to get into studying.

I get sleepy during class, and English is especially bad.

I wonder why Miku and Saki can study so hard? It’s really mysterious.

Miku tells me to study harder, but Seiya is the same as me, and my gaming friends are like that too, so I don’t really feel that studying is important.

Thinking about that, I head toward Miku and Saki.

“Miku, Saki, let’s go home together for the first time in a while. We haven’t had a chance to go home together recently.”

Since becoming high school students, we haven’t had many chances to go home together. We sometimes eat lunch together, though.

Anyway, that’s why I invited the two of them.

Miku seems to have increased the number of times she goes to cram school, and Saki seems to have more things to do at home and with the committee, and I’ve been busy with the game I’m into with Seiya and the others, so I’ve been going home early a lot.

“Sure. I’m free today, so that’s fine.”

“I’m fine with it too.”

“Is Kana coming later?”

“That’s the plan.”

“Then let’s wait a little while.”

A little while later, Kana arrived.

“Sorry for the wait! Miku-nee, Saki-nee!”

“Kana, you finally came.”

“Is onii san coming home with us today too?”

“Well, that’s how it turned out.”

“I see. Then let’s all go home together!”

◇

Since it was a rare opportunity for everyone to go home together, I made a suggestion to the three of them, and now we were stopping by a cafe.

“Speaking of which, Tsubasa? The midterm exams are coming up soon, are you studying properly?”

“Well, I guess so?”

“You’re not participating in the study group this time, so you better study properly!”

“I know, but… Why are Miku and Saki so good at studying?”

“I just think that if I’m going to do it, I want to be the best… Even though I’ve never been the best…”

“I’m not as smart as Miku, but maybe it’s for the future? It’s very vague, but I feel like I have to do it anyway!”

“You two are amazing. I get a headache when I study…”

“But Kana, if you try, you can do it, and you’ll get used to it if you do it properly.”

“That’s right. I think so too. Besides, Kana, despite what you say, you usually study properly before tests.”

“Is that so? I’m going to try my best this time too, but I’m a little worried.”

“Kana hates studying just like me.”

“But Kana still studies before tests, and she’s never gotten a failing grade. She’s different from Tsubasa. Tsubasa used to run away from studying, and he ended up getting failing grades.”

“…But I haven’t gotten more than ten failing grades, right?”

Miku has been serious and responsible since she was a child.

Because of that, she tends to be a bit bossy toward me, Kana, and Saki, but for some reason, she’s especially bossy toward me.

She does help us with our homework, so I’m really grateful for that, but it’s also true that sometimes I find it a bit annoying.

Miku isn’t our parent, so I don’t think she needs to be so bossy. I wish she could be a little more flexible.

Just then, Kana’s cell phone rang.

“Ah!”

Kana quickly picked up her phone and started looking at it happily.

“Is something wrong, Kana? Did someone contact you?”

“Yes, but don’t worry about it. I’m just going to the bathroom!”

With that, Kana left.

“Hey, hasn’t Kana been acting a little strange lately?”

“Really? I don’t think so.”

“I don’t think there’s anything strange about her either.”

“But she’s definitely been playing with her smartphone a lot more, and I wonder if she’s been in contact with someone.”

“Maybe it’s just her friends? Kana has always had a lot of friends.”

“That’s true. Kana is especially trusted by girls. I always get the impression that she’s been confiding in people about various things for a long time.”

Even so, I still feel a little uneasy about it… It’s true that Kana has a lot of female friends, and while I don’t know the details, I do know that she’s been confiding in people.

Hmm… But if the two of you don’t feel that way, maybe it’s just my imagination?

It was just a vague uneasy feeling on my part…

“I’m back!”

“Welcome back, Kana-chan.”

“What were you talking about?”

“Well, I just noticed that Kana’s been acting a bit strange lately, so I was asking them two about it.”

“Me?”

“Because she’s been looking at her phone and smiling a lot more than usual, and I thought it was a bit strange. But when I asked you two, you said nothing was wrong, so I guess it’s just my imagination.”

“Is that so? But it’s normal, isn’t it? Besides, onii san…”

Kana was about to say something, but I interrupted her when I saw something. Or rather, the words slipped out.

“Ugh… that guys are really annoying.”

When I said that, the three of them looked in the direction I was looking.

There were several men walking side by side, taking up a lot of space.

They were dressed casually, with lots of piercings, clearly looking like delinquents. People passing by were avoiding them one-sidedly, but they were walking as if it were normal.

Thinking they were really annoying, I said,

“I hate delinquents like that… They don’t care about other people’s inconvenience.”

“Those guys might look like that, but I don’t think everyone is like that. You can’t judge someone just by their appearance.”

Kana said that in response to my words, but it’s only natural to think that way after seeing them.

Besides, there are guys like that at our school too, and we’re even in the same class.

They’ve been the subject of rumors since middle school, so I’m really glad there aren’t more of them.

“No way. Appearance and personality are directly connected. If they look like that, there’s almost no reason to trust them, right? Besides, there’s only one person at our school who could be called a delinquent, so I’m really glad. A school with a bunch of people like that would be the worst.”

When I said that, Kana looked down and fell silent, but then Miku and Saki spoke up.

“Well, let’s drop that topic. It’s definitely wrong to judge someone based on their appearance alone, and they’re not causing any trouble at school anyway. There’s no point in talking based on rumors alone.”

“That’s true. But why do you hate delinquents so much, Tsubasa?”

The reason I hate them… It’s not like there’s any special reason.

I just don’t like them for some reason. I can’t get along with them at all, and above all, I don’t want Kana, Miku, or Saki to have anything to do with them.

Miku will probably be fine, but Kana and Saki might be influenced negatively. That’s why I’ve been telling the three of them not to get close to delinquents.

Especially that guy in our class is really dangerous.

Rumors are rumors, but I definitely don’t want the three of them to get close to him.

When I found out they were in the same class, I made sure to tell everyone to stay away from them.

There are rumors that he’s always changing girlfriends, and I was worried that the three of them, who are good-looking, might be targeted…

Actually, I heard that he didn’t come to school when he was in middle school, so why is he attending high school regularly now? He’s taking classes normally, so is he just pretending to be serious now? Some people have gotten used to him now, but on the first day, everyone looked really annoyed, and I wish he’d think about how he affects others… Doesn’t he realize that just his presence makes the atmosphere bad?

Well, he’ll probably cause another problem and stop coming to school anyway.

“But isn’t it just plain annoying? We have someone like that in our class, and just having him there makes the atmosphere in the class worse. It’s really annoying, isn’t it?”

When I said that, Kana replied,

“Well, but when I go to everyone’s classroom, I don’t feel that kind of atmosphere…”

“That’s because lately he’s been going somewhere else at lunchtime. Sure, some people are getting used to him, but he’ll definitely cause trouble again soon… You know that, Kana? We’ve talked about it many times.”

“I’ve heard that… But I heard he’s changed since becoming a high school student?”

Indeed, such rumors are circulating from time to time.

He’s still coming to school, and I’ve heard that the teachers’ attitudes have changed a little.

The fact that some people are getting used to him is probably one of the reasons.

“Even so, he’s still a delinquent, so everyone should definitely stay away from him, okay? There are also a lot of rumors that he likes girls.”

“But we don’t know for sure… I don’t think it’s good to judge him based on rumors alone!”

When I said that, Kana replied angrily.

Why is Kana angry?

“What’s wrong all of a sudden… I didn’t say anything wrong, did I?”

“But!!”

Just as Kana was about to say something again, Miku spoke up.

“Calm down, both of you. Tsubasa, stop believing rumors and saying things like that. You haven’t actually been a victim or seen anything, have you? Besides, Kana probably just got emotionally invested in a manga she read recently.”

“Manga?”

“Oh, that one, right? Um… It’s a manga I recommended, and the main character is a girl who is easily misunderstood because of her appearance, and Kana said she felt sorry for her.”

Manga… Kana does tend to get emotionally invested in stories like that.

If that’s the case, maybe I can understand it?

But that doesn’t mean I want her to empathize with that guy…

“Well, if that’s the case, then it’s fine…”

“I’m going home…”

Kana said that and left, and the two of them followed her, saying, “We’ll take care of the rest.”

“Man… Kana is still so childish.”

Getting angry over a manga is something I wouldn’t expect from a third-year middle school student.

Like the incident with Saki the other day, I can’t understand why she gets angry over something that has nothing to do with her.

And this time it’s over a manga… I wish she could think more calmly.

“Well, I guess I’ll just leave Kana to the two of them.”

Personally, seeing Kana fiddling with her smartphone made me wonder if she had made a male friend! I was a little worried, but if Miku and Saki don’t feel any discomfort, then it’s probably just my imagination.

Anyway, Miku hates other boys besides me, and if there was someone like that around Kana, whom Miku dotes on, she would never overlook it.

Now that I understand that, there’s no problem.

It’s Kana, so she’ll probably be back to normal tomorrow as if nothing happened.

“Anyway, I really want to play that game…”

It’s a hunting game that was recently released, and Seiya and the others have been playing it since the other day.

I can’t afford it yet, so I’ll be joining in halfway through, but I’m really looking forward to it.

If I go to my grandparents’ house this weekend, I’ll probably get some money.

Actually, it was unexpected that Kana said she wouldn’t go… I thought she’d go since she loves her grandparents so much… Well, she said it was because of the upcoming test, so maybe that’s why? Anyway, it doesn’t matter to me whether Kana is there or not this time.

She said she’d try her best this time.

“Anyway, I just want to play the game soon…”

Once I buy it, I’ll definitely catch up with everyone!!

I left the café thinking about that.
