Episode 37 – Lecture

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After parking our car at an hourly parking lot near the high-rise apartment building where Kanade and her family lived, we headed toward her house, relying on our smartphones for directions.

โ€œWow, what an impressive high-rise!โ€

Well, even though I said we were relying on our smartphonesโ€ฆ the high-rise apartment building where Kanade and her family lived stood out in the quiet residential neighborhood, much like a landmark tower rising up in the city center.

I could understand my motherโ€™s words of admiration.

โ€œUgh, I wonder when weโ€™ll ever be able to live in a tower block like this.โ€

โ€œEh, Iโ€™d prefer a detached house, though. Iโ€™ve heard stories about how a hierarchy forms between the different floors in tower blocks.โ€

โ€œI guess that kind of thing is rampant everywhere.โ€

My parents were having a conversation that made me cringe right in front of me.

โ€œWell then, shall we head over?โ€

We entered the high-rise and soon arrived in front of Kanadeโ€™s apartment.

โ€œIโ€™m feeling a little nervous, actually.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been a while since weโ€™ve seen the Ichinose family, after all.โ€

โ€œAlright, Iโ€™m going to ring the bell.โ€

As soon as my father rang the doorbell, we heard the sound of footsteps shuffling from inside.

โ€œComing!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s been a while.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah. Itโ€™s been a while.โ€

The long-awaited reunion between me and Kanadeโ€™s parents was tearless on both sidesโ€ฆ It seemed as though they were quietly, yet genuinely, happy to see each other again.

โ€œThank you so much for coming all this way today.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s nothing. Come on in.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re intruding.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re intruding.โ€

I watched their exchange from a step behind, and though their conversation felt somewhat formal, for some reason it made me smile a little.

โ€œThank you so much for coming all this way.โ€

After showing us into the living room, Kanadeโ€™s mother said.

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who came all this way, arenโ€™t you? How was France?โ€

โ€œIt was fun. โ€ฆThough saying that might be a lie.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s father nodded with a wry smile.

โ€œButโ€ฆ it was a valuable experience. I never thought Iโ€™d have the chance to learn something new at my age.โ€

โ€œI seeโ€ฆ Thatโ€™s good to hear.โ€

โ€œWhat have you two been up to since you came back here?โ€

โ€œHeโ€™s just working a regular job.โ€

Sitting next to Kanadeโ€™s mother, her father gave a wry smile.

โ€œAs for meโ€ฆ lately, Iโ€™ve been giving lectures.โ€

โ€œLectures?โ€

โ€œYes. โ€ฆThereโ€™s a demand from all kinds of people for the perspective of parents whose child has been given a terminal diagnosis.โ€

โ€ฆIndeed, facing a child who has been given a terminal diagnosis must require a certain resolve.

For example, people who find themselves in a situation similar to Kanadeโ€™s parentsโ€™โ€ฆ the valuable, firsthand experiences they can hear from Kanadeโ€™s parents would likely be very helpful.

Itโ€™s not just that.

โ€ฆDeath. Especially the death of a young childโ€ฆ has a certain allure from an entertainment perspective as well.

โ€œโ€ฆTo be honest, while we were over there, there was a time when we were struggling financially.โ€

Even if it was for the treatment of a child given a terminal diagnosis, the costs of long-term treatment abroad were bound to be exorbitant, werenโ€™t they?

โ€œSoโ€ฆ while I was looking for various ways to raise money, I received that kind of offer.โ€

โ€ฆI felt a bit conflicted.

โ€œโ€ฆAt first, I hesitated.โ€

After all, the choice Kanadeโ€™s parents made was nothing less than turning Kanade into a spectacle.

โ€œBecause I was hesitant, I honestly asked her about it.โ€

โ€ฆBut after hearing Kanadeโ€™s motherโ€™s words, I realized it immediately.

โ€œAnd she just said, โ€˜Why donโ€™t you give a lecture?โ€™ without a momentโ€™s hesitation.โ€

โ€ฆThatโ€™s exactly what Kanade would have said.

โ€œKanade is such a strong girl.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYes. Sheโ€™s become so strong, I can hardly believe sheโ€™s my own child.โ€

After saying that, Kanadeโ€™s mother gave a wry smile.

โ€œBut above allโ€ฆ it seems there was something she wanted to prioritize over being put on display.โ€

โ€œWhat was that?โ€

โ€œShe said she wanted to leave behind proof that she lived.โ€

โ€ฆIndeed, regardless of the form it took, if Kanadeโ€™s parents held a lecture about their child who had been given a terminal diagnosis, an unspecified number of people would have the opportunity to learn about Kanade.

And then, drawing inspiration from Kanadeโ€™s lifeโ€ฆ those who heard her motherโ€™s story would reflect on how to live their own lives moving forward.

That truly meantโ€ฆ that Kanadeโ€™s way of living had changed the way others lived.

In other words, it would serve as proof that Kanade had lived.

โ€œโ€ฆShe really is a strong girl, isnโ€™t she?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother smiled proudly.

โ€œโ€ฆOh. I mean, itโ€™s a bit late to ask now, but whereโ€™s Kanade?โ€

A solemn atmosphere hung in the living room.

My motherโ€ฆ only now realized that Kanade wasnโ€™t in the living room.

โ€œโ€ฆAh.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s mother, who until just a moment ago had been talking about her daughter with prideโ€”yet with a hint of sadnessโ€”โ€ฆ looked away and scratched her cheek.

โ€œShe said she doesnโ€™t want to see him.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œAkkun.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWait, what?

โ€œAkkun, did you get into a fight with my daughter or something?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆMy parentsโ€™ stares pierced my cheeks.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUm, actually, I had a competition with Kanade on a test.โ€

โ€œUh-huh, uh-huh.โ€

โ€œI totally crushed her.โ€

โ€ฆI mean, I absolutely destroyed her.

โ€œHehhe. How pathetic.โ€

โ€ฆKanadeโ€™s mom was desperately trying to hold back her laughter.

โ€œReally. That kid didnโ€™t study at all until right before she came back to Japan. Thereโ€™s no way she could challenge A-kun and win.โ€

โ€ฆAfter a momentโ€ฆ Kanadeโ€™s mom said with an exasperated look.

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun. Sorry. Sheโ€™s in her roomโ€”could you go get her?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆEh?โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t go, whoโ€™s going to?โ€

Her mother gave me a sharp slap on the back.

โ€œโ€ฆAlright, Iโ€™ll go check on her.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œTake your time.โ€

It seemed like Kanadeโ€™s mother and mineโ€ฆ were actually enjoying the situation.
