Synopsis
My childhood friend was suffering from a serious illness so severe that she had been given a terminal diagnosis. When I was little, I would visit the hospital where she was staying day and night, praying for her full recovery and trying to cheer her up.
To encourage her when she was feeling down, I would force a clumsy smile and tease her playfully time and time again.
Her condition worsened day by day.
I felt helpless; there was nothing I could do for her.
Her parents made the decision to travel abroad for her treatment.
“Let’s meet again.”
To my final words of encouragement, my childhood friend merely smiled; she never replied.
Perhaps she had come to terms with her impending death.
After that, we never met again.
Or so I thought.
By the time we were in high school, she had recovered from her illness and returned home. Perhaps because she had narrowly escaped death, her personality had completely transformed from the days when she was suffering from her illness—she had become incredibly cheerful.
