Episode 21 – A rough road ahead

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Saturday.

I woke up a little earlier than usual.

Iโ€™d studied longer than usual last night. With so many events this weekโ€”like seeing Kanade againโ€”Iโ€™d really built up some fatigue.

I didnโ€™t get much sleep.

But even so, I woke up earlier than usual.

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s the day of the date, isnโ€™t it?โ€

After school yesterday, I made plans to go on a date with Kanade.

Well, strictly speaking, I hadnโ€™t intended to make plans with Kanadeโ€ฆ but before I knew it, it was decided we were going on a date.

The turn of events was so sudden that for a while, my brain refused to process itโ€ฆ but once it came back online, a whirlwind of emotions began to swirl inside me.

Still, the strongest feeling that began to take root wasโ€ฆ I absolutely cannot mess this up.

โ€œIโ€™d better fix my bedhead before I go.โ€

Today, above all else, Iโ€™ll spend the day without making any blunders so Kanade doesnโ€™t get fed up with me.

With that in mind, I decided to pay even more attention to my appearance than usual.

I left my room, intending to go to the dressing room on the first floor to fix my bedhead.

I canโ€™t let Kanade see me looking this scruffy.

โ€œOh, good morning, A-kun.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI just said I couldnโ€™t let her see me like this!

โ€œGood morning. โ€ฆUm, Kanade, why are you here?โ€

Kanade was already in the living room, munching on what looked like breakfast bread, as if it were perfectly natural for her to be here.

โ€œHmm? Come to think of it, I realized we hadnโ€™t actually decided on a meeting place or time.โ€

Now that she mentioned it, after our date yesterdayโ€”partly because Kanade had left a little earlierโ€”we hadnโ€™t decided on a meeting place or time, let aloneโ€ฆ where we were even going.

โ€œCouldnโ€™t we have just texted each other to figure it out?โ€

โ€œHehe. I figured, since weโ€™re at it, I might as well just come over to your place.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€œHehe. Right?โ€

It was trueโ€”it was faster to meet at each otherโ€™s homes than to go out of our way to meet at a place neither of us had been to before.

That Kanade is a genius at saving time, man.

โ€œOh, and I did ask Auntie for permission right before she left, you know?โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€œYeah. She told me she left your breakfast on the table, so I should eat that for breakfast.โ€

โ€œOh, that bread. That was supposed to be my breakfast.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆMy mom is still cold toward me as always.

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ? Soโ€ฆ does that mean Iโ€™m skipping breakfast?โ€

โ€œHehe.โ€

Kanade must have finished her bread, because she stood up.

โ€œAkkun. Actually, I already had a proper breakfast at home today.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

She already ate, but she ate my breakfastโ€ฆ?

โ€œBut I took advantage of your auntโ€™s kindness and ate the bread even though I have a small stomach.โ€

โ€œYou ate it?โ€

โ€œYeah. Thanks to that, my stomach hurts a littleโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIt hurtsโ€ฆ?โ€

Itโ€™s pretty pathetic, and I think sheโ€™s saying something hard to understandโ€ฆ

Kanade, how can you look so smugโ€ฆ?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou shouldnโ€™t have forced yourself to eat it.โ€

Honestly, I canโ€™t think of anything else to say.

โ€œHehe. I had a reason I had to force myself to eat it.โ€

โ€œYou did?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Kanade stood up and headed to the kitchen.

โ€ฆโ€ฆNo way!

โ€œIโ€™ll make your breakfast, A-kun.โ€

Looking at Kanadeโ€™s shy smile, I completely understood her intentions.

That Kanadeโ€ฆ sheโ€™s planning to serve me a proper hot mealโ€”not the bread my mom preparedโ€”just so Iโ€™ll be ready to go out with herโ€ฆ!

So, Kanade, in order to prevent food waste, you made me eat that bread even though I was already fullโ€ฆ!

Damn it.

That Kanadeโ€ฆ!

โ€œHehe. Just wait a sec, okay?โ€

If I was already full, couldnโ€™t she have just made breakfast for me after making me eat the bread!?

โ€œIโ€™ll make your breakfast right away, A-kun.โ€

Guys have bigger stomachs than girls, so if sheโ€™d done that, Kanade wouldnโ€™t have had to suffer either, right!?

โ€œA-kun, just wait on the sofa.โ€

Well, whateverโ€ฆ

โ€œI wonder what I should make for breakfastโ€ฆโ€

After all, I get to eat the food Kanade prepared for me.

I sat down on the sofa and turned on the TV.

Just as I started watching the morning talk show, I heard the sound of Kanade opening the refrigerator door.

โ€ฆAnd then, the sounds from Kanadeโ€™s side stopped.

No sound of her taking out ingredients, no sound of cookingโ€ฆ I couldnโ€™t hear a thing.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKanade?โ€

I tore my attention away from the TV and turned my gaze toward the kitchen.

Kanade stood there, the refrigerator door still open, completely motionless.

โ€œIs something wrong?โ€

I stood up from the sofa and headed to the kitchen.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAhaha.โ€

Kanade gave a dry laugh.

โ€œAkkun. โ€ฆIs it okay if we have breakfast at a nearby cafรฉ?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

For a moment, I was confused and didnโ€™t understand what she meantโ€ฆ but when I looked inside the fridge, it all clicked.

โ€œThe fridge is completely empty, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s completely empty.โ€

Apparently, Mom had left for work after using up all the food.

โ€œWaaah. Akkun, Iโ€™m sooo sorry.โ€

Kanade started getting flustered, her eyes brimming with tears.

โ€œHahaha. Itโ€™s okay. Itโ€™s fine, really. Itโ€™s no big deal.โ€

For a while, I ended up desperately trying to comfort Kanadeโ€ฆ
