Episode 54 – by your side

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Even to myself, it feels like itโ€™s been a while since I spoke with such passion.

Come to think of it, had Takagaki and I really been such close friendsโ€ฆ before I took that decisive action?

We met after starting high school.

I happened to run into herโ€”who was in the same class as meโ€”in the libraryโ€ฆ and we hit it off right away. Now we push each other to do better as study partners.

โ€ฆItโ€™s definitely not the kind of relationship where Iโ€™d meddle in family matters.

If thatโ€™s the case, then why am Iโ€ฆ taking Takagakiโ€™s side this much?

[Akkun, have you ever been to France?]

The reason isโ€ฆ because our paths crossed.

โ€ฆโ€ฆMy guiding principle has always been.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆMuu.โ€

After Iโ€™d poured out my feelings, Kanade clearly sulked.

Her cheeks flushed, and she glared at me.

โ€œKanade, why are you glaring at me?โ€

โ€œAkkun isโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI amโ€ฆโ€ฆ?โ€

Kanade didnโ€™t say a word for a while.

โ€œโ€ฆSeriously, Akkun, you really do love taking on the thankless roles, donโ€™t you?โ€

When Kanade finally spokeโ€ฆ she turned her face away, looking angry.

โ€œItโ€™s not like I like taking on thankless roles.โ€

โ€œYou do. You love it. โ€ฆSeriously, Akkun, youโ€™re making your own life miserable.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true.โ€

โ€œIt is.โ€

Kanade looked down.

โ€œThatโ€™s why, A-kunโ€ฆ Iโ€™m so obsessed with you.โ€

I couldnโ€™t hear Kanadeโ€™s voice.

โ€œWell, if thatโ€™s what you want to do, A-kun, then go ahead.โ€

Kanade said.

โ€œYeah. I will.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆMuu. Iโ€™m not going to help you, though.โ€

โ€œYeah. I know.โ€

I gave a wry smile.

โ€œThis isโ€ฆ a matter between me and Takagaki-san.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m coming too, after all.โ€

โ€œHuh? Why?โ€

โ€œI said Iโ€™m coming, so Iโ€™m coming!โ€

Kanade raised her voice.

It was rare to see Kanade this angry.

โ€œUgh. A-kun, you really areโ€ฆโ€

I felt like Iโ€™d seen Kanade say something like this on another occasion recently.

Back then, sheโ€™d said it happilyโ€ฆ but now sheโ€™s angry.

โ€œWell then, Iโ€™m going to try contacting Takagaki-san.โ€

โ€œHuh? Iโ€™ll do it.โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAh, but you absolutely cannot be the one to call her.โ€

Why?

Kanade stood up from the sofa and left the living room.

She could have just contacted her right here.

Soon, Kanadeโ€™s cheerful voice could be heard from the hallway.

It seemsโ€ฆ sheโ€™s already on the phone with Takagaki-san.

โ€œPhew.โ€

Kanade returned to the living room.

โ€œHow did it go?โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆI didnโ€™t ask about her brotherโ€™s situation for now; I just asked if we could hang out today.โ€

โ€œAnd?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆShe said she has plans today, but itโ€™d be okay for a little while this afternoon.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

Plans.

โ€ฆCome to think of it, the day we went to the airport to take pictures of the wrapped airplane, Takagaki-san was late for our meeting. The reason was that she had something to do.

โ€œโ€ฆThe circumstantial evidence is really piling up, isn’t it?โ€

A moment ago, I had convinced myself that the idea that something had happened to Takagaki-san’s younger brother was just our speculationโ€ฆ but every time something happens, it reinforces the conclusion that our speculation isn’t wrong.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHaa.โ€

Kanade let out a sigh.

โ€œWhoa!โ€

She sat down next to me.

โ€œKa, Kanadeโ€ฆโ€ฆ?โ€

She took my hand.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYouโ€™re, too close.โ€

She rested her head on my shoulder.

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun, you seeโ€ฆโ€

Kanadeโ€™s voiceโ€ฆ unlike my racing heart, was calm.

โ€œWhat do you think makes someone whoโ€™s feeling down want to try their best when someone pays attention to themโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€ฆIs this another one of Kanadeโ€™s rules of thumb?

โ€œโ€ฆHey, what do you think?โ€

โ€ฆ

โ€œSending words of encouragement, maybe?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œComforting them, maybe?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆEmpathizing with their pain, maybe?โ€

โ€œSomething much simpler.โ€

Simpleโ€ฆ?

โ€œItโ€™s enough if youโ€™re just there.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆ

โ€œMore than encouragement, more than comfort, more than empathyโ€ฆ Having someone important by my side. Not wanting to be separated from that person. โ€ฆJust thinking that gives me the strength to keep going.โ€

โ€ฆIs thatโ€ฆ all there is to it?

โ€œโ€ฆBack then, you did that for me, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€ฆBack then, I used to visit Kanade every week.

โ€œThatโ€™s whyโ€ฆ Iโ€™m alive right now.โ€

I was always by her side.

โ€œAkkun. Akkunโ€ฆโ€

Was that her reason for living?

Itโ€™s hard to believe, to be honest.

โ€œAkkunโ€ฆ youโ€™ll stay by my side from now on, wonโ€™t you?โ€

Butโ€ฆ hearing Kanadeโ€™s faint, fading voice, I didnโ€™t know how to respond.
