Episode 35 – Mutual feelings

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After leaving school, I headed for the station.

My test went completely wrong. This had never happened to me before.

โ€ฆThose unpleasant memories kept coming back to haunt me over and over again.

โ€œโ€ฆIt’s been a while, Kanade.โ€

Back in elementary school, Kanade was very popular.

She was beautiful, cheerful, kindโ€ฆ she was such a perfect girl that no one could even feel jealous of her.

However, from a certain day onward, Kanade began to be treated as if she werenโ€™t even there in the classroom.

It wasnโ€™t because she was being bullied.

It was because sheโ€ฆ had fallen ill with a serious disease so severe that she was given a terminal diagnosis.

My mother took me to her hospital room.

Kanade, whom I hadnโ€™t seen in months, lookedโ€ฆ

Kanade skipped school today.

On the day of the testโ€”even though just the day before, she had been so full of energy, studying hard to compete with me on the test.

โ€ฆI do have some thoughts about the fact that her efforts werenโ€™t rewarded.

Part of me thinks thereโ€™s no way a god who only makes her suffer like this could actually exist.

But amidst the whirlwind of emotions swirling inside me, the one thingโ€ฆ Iโ€™m thinking about right now.

โ€œโ€ฆYou wonโ€™t die, will you, Kanade?โ€

She once came close to death.

She once nearly lost everythingโ€”her beauty, her cheerful personality, even her lifeโ€”to a serious illness that couldnโ€™t be treated in this country.

Fortunately, she is still alive and well today.

Butโ€ฆ this is her first sick day since we reunited.

โ€ฆThere was no way the memory of parting with herโ€”something I had once thought Iโ€™d never have to face againโ€”could stay out of my mind.

Because of that, I couldnโ€™t focus on my test at all.

And I couldnโ€™t sit still any longer.

So Iโ€ฆ boarded a train and headed for her house.

Having just returned from France, her home is in a different location than before.

I had heard the address from Kanade herself some time ago.

โ€œCome visit sometime.โ€

She said that and smiled at me when she gave me the address.

Butโ€ฆ until yesterday, weโ€™d only ever hung out at my place; weโ€™d never once stopped by her home.

Soโ€ฆ now, Iโ€™m feeling a little regret.

โ€œTo think Iโ€™d be visiting her new place for the first time under these circumstancesโ€ฆโ€

To be honest, Iโ€™d have preferred to mark the occasion a little more peacefully. Thinking that, I felt a twinge of pain deep in my chest.

I got off the train two stops before the one nearest my home.

I exited the ticket gate of a station I knew only by name and walked through a station plaza Iโ€™d never seen beforeโ€ฆ heading toward a quiet residential neighborhood.

โ€œIs this the place?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s new home was a high-rise apartment building.

Feeling a bit intimidated, I walked through the grand entrance and entered her room number on the automatic lock.

After a few ringsโ€ฆ

โ€œHello?โ€

A womanโ€™s voice came from inside.

โ€œUmโ€ฆโ€

It wasnโ€™t Kanadeโ€™s voice, so I hesitantly spoke up.

โ€œIs that you, Akkun?โ€

โ€œHuh? Oh, yes.โ€

โ€œOh my, youโ€™ve grown so much. Itโ€™s me, itโ€™s me. Kanadeโ€™s mom.โ€

โ€œOh, it was you, maโ€™am.โ€

I hadnโ€™t recognized her at all over the intercom.

โ€œDid you come to visit Kanade?โ€

A visit.

I hated that word.

โ€œโ€ฆYes.โ€

โ€œI see. Thank you. โ€ฆIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

My heart fluttered.

โ€œOh, no, no. Actually, Iโ€™d love to talk to you for a while, but unfortunately, I have to go to work now. So I have to hang up right away.โ€

โ€œOh, I see.โ€

โ€œYeah. So, letโ€™s celebrate our long-awaited reunion properly next time. My kid wonโ€™t let you come over to our place at all.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHaha.โ€

โ€œProbably because the house she used to live in is gone. She misses your house, which is still there and where she used to play so often.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI see. So thatโ€™s why Kanade used to come over to my place.

โ€œOh, sorry. I got a little sentimental there. Iโ€™ll open the door for you.โ€

โ€œOh, please do.โ€

As the automatic door opened, I stepped into the elevator.

I got off on the third floorโ€ฆ and arrived at the room Kanade had given me the number for. I rang the doorbell.

โ€œComing!โ€

The door opened, and an older woman stood there smiling.

โ€œLong time no see, A-kun.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s been a whileโ€ฆ Auntie.โ€

โ€œYeah. Sorry about that. I really have to go now.โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€

Looking closely, I saw she was wearing a suit.

โ€œWell then, Iโ€™m counting on you to look after my daughter.โ€

The moment she ushered me into the apartment, she cut across the room and headed for the entrance.

โ€œTake your time~โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

The door slammed shut with a loud bang.

โ€ฆIn the spacious, quiet apartment, I decided to look for Kanadeโ€™s room.

The laundry room.

The bathroom.

The kitchen.

The living room.

โ€ฆOn a bookshelf at the far end of the living room, I found a few family photos.

A photo of the three of them laughing happily together on a camping trip in Japan.

A photo from a family trip to Franceโ€ฆ of Kanade wearing a knit cap.

โ€ฆโ€ฆAnd a photo of Kanade and me together when we were kids.

Iโ€™m pretty sure this photo was taken at the neighborhood Bon Festival.

Itโ€™s a photo of Kanade snatching the yakisoba I was eating right out of my hand.

After that, I burst into tears, devastated that sheโ€™d eaten my yakisobaโ€ฆ

Iโ€™m sorry, Akkun. To make it up to you, Iโ€™ll stay with you forever.]

Seeing Kanadeโ€™s smile, I stopped crying right away.

โ€ฆโ€ฆBack then, I never would have imagined that Kanade would end up like that later on.

This wasnโ€™t the time to get sentimental.

I searched for Kanadeโ€™s room.

The next room I opened wasโ€ฆ Kanadeโ€™s parentsโ€™ bedroom.

And finallyโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆThere she was.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s bedroom.

She was lying on the bed, breathing peacefully in her sleep.

โ€œโ€ฆSheโ€™s alive.โ€

I listened to her breathing once, twiceโ€ฆ three times. After listening over and over, I confirmed that her life was still continuing today.

โ€ฆI felt the tension that had been building up inside me suddenly ease.

I wanted to curl up right thereโ€ฆ and let tears of relief spill out, but I couldnโ€™t.

โ€œโ€ฆI guess Iโ€™ll make some rice porridge and wait for her.โ€

I decided to borrow the kitchen.

While cooking with clumsy handsโ€ฆ I resolved to wait patiently for her to wake up.

Struggling through the cookingโ€ฆ I wonder how much time had passed.

Suddenly, the door to Kanadeโ€™s bedroom swung open.

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun?โ€

โ€œGood morning, Kanade.โ€

Kanade appeared, a cooling gel pack stuck to her forehead.

Sheโ€ฆ must have been quite surprised to find me in her house, for her eyes widened in astonishment.

โ€œHas your fever gone down?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh? Oh, no. I still feel sluggish.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

I took off my apron and approached Kanade.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Anxiety flickered in Kanadeโ€™s eyes.

Her unusual reaction tickled a slight sadistic urge in me, but I managed to hold it back.

โ€œYou should get some more sleep.โ€

Carrying Kanade on my back, I headed toward her bedroom.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkunโ€™s back is warm.โ€

โ€œIs it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah.โ€

I set Kanade down on the bed and touched the back of her neck. She definitely still felt a bit feverish.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, Iโ€™m going to make some rice porridge, so you should get some more sleep, okay?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not sleepy anymore.โ€

โ€œReally? Well thenโ€ฆโ€ฆ Iโ€™ll be right back.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œHurry up okay?.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

I went back to the kitchen and hurriedly made some rice porridge.

โ€œItโ€™s ready.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€

Kanade, looking frail as she sat up in bed with only her upper body raisedโ€ฆ combined with her fragile smile, brought back those unpleasant memories from the past.

โ€œAkkun?โ€

โ€œOh, sorry.โ€

I found myself freezing in front of the door, but I started walking again, trying to cover it up.

โ€œHere you go.โ€

I handed her the tray, butโ€ฆ

โ€œPfft.โ€

Kanade turned her face away.

โ€œAkkun.โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œFeed me.โ€

I had no choice.

โ€œCan you open your mouth?โ€

โ€œAah.โ€

โ€œPuff. Puff.โ€

I fed Kanade the rice porridge.

I scooped up some porridge with a spoon, let it cool a little, and brought it to her mouthโ€ฆ

After repeating that a few dozen timesโ€ฆ she finished all the porridge.

โ€œIt was delicious.โ€

โ€œIt’s instant.โ€

โ€œBut it was delicious.โ€

โ€œI see.โ€

I stood up.

โ€œWhat time is auntie coming home?โ€

โ€œProbably in the evening.โ€

โ€œI see. โ€ฆWell, I’ll stick around until then.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

Kanade tilted her head.

โ€œWasnโ€™t this porridge supposed to be dinner?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œCome to think of it, what time is it now?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAkkun, what about your test?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆKanade had a strange look on her face.

Why do you look so sadโ€ฆโ€ฆ?

Wanting to put her at ease, I smiled.

โ€œI wasnโ€™t feeling well. I didnโ€™t take it.โ€

Actuallyโ€ฆ the moment I heard Kanade wasnโ€™t feeling well, I felt a sudden, intense dizziness.

โ€œโ€ฆI was more worried about you than the test.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorryโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI was worried you might disappear again. When I thought about that, I couldnโ€™t focus on the test at all.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Akkunโ€ฆโ€

Kanade was crying.

โ€œItโ€™s my faultโ€ฆ I ruined your dream, Akkun.โ€

Seeing Kanadeโ€™s tears of anguishโ€ฆ I smiled again.

โ€œAre you talking about studying abroad in France?โ€

Kanade nodded silently.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s the caseโ€ฆ didnโ€™t things turn out just as you wished? Is there any need to be sad?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆLike thisโ€ฆโ€

Kanadeโ€™s voice was trembling.

โ€œIn a way like this. I didnโ€™t want my wish to come true like this!โ€

โ€ฆThat was probably because she had once suffered from an illness herself.

Because she knew that illness was painful, agonizingโ€ฆ and a desperate thing that could easily take a life, she probably didnโ€™t want to use it as a choice that held the fate of others in her hands.

โ€œโ€ฆKanade, donโ€™t get the wrong idea.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œMy dreamโ€ฆ No, my goalโ€”it hasnโ€™t been cut short yet.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

โ€œJust because I missed first place on a single test doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ve lost everything.โ€

โ€œBut Akkunโ€ฆ You were acting like youโ€™d die if you didnโ€™t get first place on the academic test.โ€

โ€œI am ready to die. How else can I face this without that kind of resolve?โ€

Thatโ€™s how serious I am.

โ€œIโ€ฆ I never want to feel that helplessness from that day again. For that, risking my life would be easy.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThen, after allโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut competition is a matter of luck. Of course, the worst possible outcome could be waiting for me. Thatโ€™s why I wonโ€™t let a single failure get me down.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEven if I fail. Even if I canโ€™t do anythingโ€ฆ another chance will come.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAnd the one who made me realize that was none other than you, Kanade.โ€

A few months after starting high school.

That day, when I was reunited with Kanade in the classroomโ€ฆ

Iโ€™ll surely never forget everything I saw that day, at that moment.

โ€œSo, don’t worry.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

โ€œYou didn’t take my dream away.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆUgh.โ€

โ€œIf anything, you’reโ€ฆ my driving force. So, just be yourself, like always.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

Kanade was on the verge of tears.

โ€œBesides, you might still be able to take the test.โ€

I gave Kanade a smile.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œOur school has a special policy for students who are absent due to illness on the day of the testโ€”they get a make-up exam.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll definitely qualify for that. As for meโ€ฆ well, Iโ€™ve been on my best behavior lately, so if I beg them, they might let me slide. Maybe.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOh, I see.โ€

Kanade flopped back onto the bed.

โ€œPhewโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHaha. Are you relieved?โ€

โ€œI am. โ€ฆIโ€™m so relieved I donโ€™t know what to do with myself.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m glad to hear that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆNow that Iโ€™m relieved, Iโ€™m getting sleepy.โ€

โ€œThen go to sleep.โ€

โ€œAkkun. Akkun.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWill you stroke my head until I fall asleep?โ€

Why?

โ€œWill you stroke my head?โ€

โ€œNo, why?โ€

โ€œWill you stroke my head?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€œEhehe. Akkunโ€™s hands are so warmโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆW-well, Iโ€™m glad to hear that.

โ€œHehehe. Hehehehehe.โ€

For someone running a fever, Kanade seemed surprisingly energetic.

โ€œStill, I canโ€™t believe youโ€™d put me before that test you were so desperate to pass.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, I did know about the special exception.โ€

As for how I found out about this provisionโ€ฆ it was because I was looking into ways to extend my study time in case I didnโ€™t finish studying for the test in time.

To be honest, itโ€™s a provision thatโ€™s so open to abuse, itโ€™s a wonder it still exists.

I think it should be abolished as soon as possible.

โ€ฆWell. That aside, Iโ€™ll study a lot once I get home.

โ€œYou put me before the testโ€”you put me before the test!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAre you even listening?โ€

โ€œNo, I’m not.โ€

If you’re not listeningโ€ฆ I guess there’s nothing I can do about it?

โ€œHehe. Really. Seriouslyโ€ฆโ€

Kanade smiled cheerfully.

โ€œAkkun, you like me way too much!โ€
