Episode 42 – The Day Before Summer Vacation

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Kanade and I walked to school together and arrived at the school.

โ€œGood morning, Ichinose-san.โ€

โ€œGood morning.โ€

As soon as we got to the classroom, Kanade headed over to her friends.

Feeling a little left out, I sat down at my desk.

โ€œโ€ฆGood morning, Hagiwara-kun.โ€

โ€œOh, Takagaki-san. Good morning.โ€

Just as I sat down, Takagaki-san, who was sitting next to me, greeted me.

I nodded back in return, butโ€ฆ for some reason, she was looking around nervously, as if on the lookout for something.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong? You look like a thief about to commit a crime, keeping such a watchful eye on your surroundings.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re silly. Real thieves donโ€™t just look around aimlessly.โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œPeople who are on high alert just look suspicious, donโ€™t they? Thatโ€™s exactly why the more someone is involved in criminal acts like theft, the more they try to blend in with ordinary people.โ€

โ€œHaha. I see.โ€

I was genuinely impressed.

โ€ฆI wanted to say, โ€œYou really know your thieves, donโ€™t you?โ€ but I thought that would be a bit harsh, so I kept my mouth shut.

โ€œSo, why are you being so vigilant?โ€

โ€œSo I donโ€™t get glared at by your childhood friend.โ€

โ€œKanade?โ€

I glanced over at Kanade, and she was chatting happily with Kadokura-san and the others.

โ€ฆLooking at that smile, she seemed to be in a good mood, and I couldnโ€™t imagine her glaring at Takagaki-san.

โ€œIโ€™m not talking about her facial expression when I say โ€˜glaring.โ€™โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œAnyway, Iโ€™ll get straight to the point.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œStarting tomorrow, itโ€™s the summer vacation everyoneโ€™s been waiting for, right?โ€

With final exams over, our school was scheduled to begin its long summer break starting tomorrow.

So today, after the closing ceremony, we were dismissed earlyโ€ฆ and after that, just as Takagaki-san said, school would be out for a while.

Well, even though itโ€™s a break, the teachers are still coming in, and students involved in club activities come to school, so it doesnโ€™t really feel like we have that much free time compared to elementary schoolโ€ฆ

โ€œSo?โ€

Why on earth did Takagaki-san bring up the topic of summer vacation with me?

โ€œDo you have any plans?โ€

โ€ฆPlans?

My summer vacation plansโ€ฆ

โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œHahโ€ฆโ€

I answered honestly, and she laughed.

Did she ask about my summer vacation plans just to tease me?

Come on, if thatโ€™s the case, even I would beโ€ฆ

Well, Iโ€™m not really mad or anything. Itโ€™s not like this is the first year Iโ€™ve had no plans during summer breakโ€”I donโ€™t have any friends, after all.

โ€œSorry, sorry. โ€ฆI asked because I figured you probably didnโ€™t have any, but when you actually said you didnโ€™t, it just seemed a little funny.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s so funny?โ€

Iโ€™m not mad, but when she says something like that, clearly waiting for me to call her out on it, I canโ€™t help but respond.

โ€œโ€ฆPhew. Sorry. Iโ€™ve calmed down.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. Well then, make sure to enjoy your plans-free summer vacation to the fullest, okay?โ€

โ€œYeah. Got it.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYouโ€™re not just going to nod obediently there.โ€

Takagaki glared at me.

โ€ฆLooking back at the conversation so far, I feel like Iโ€™m the one with the bigger grievance against the other person, if anything.

โ€œโ€ฆSo, Hagiwara. Can you spare me a little time the day after tomorrow?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œTimeโ€ฆ How about it?โ€

โ€ฆI racked my brain.

What on earth does Takagaki-san plan to make me do the day after tomorrow?

โ€ฆThe specific things that come to mind are:

Religion.

Multi-level marketing.

Illegal part-time work.

โ€œSorry. Actually, I have a plan I absolutely canโ€™t cancel the day after tomorrow.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lie. Thereโ€™s no way someone with thirty days of free time during summer break would have plans for just one specific day out of those thirty.โ€

โ€œNo, no, thatโ€™s just showing you have way too little experience with people.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re both the same, arenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œI mean, even Iโ€™ve only ever had the experience of contacting a middle school friend to ask if we could hang out tomorrow, only to find out three days later that their phone had died. Thatโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go pulling out some sad story here.โ€

Takagaki gave me a look of exasperation, then shook her head.

โ€œDonโ€™t change the subject, for crying out loud.โ€

Takagaki was a little angry.

โ€œThe longer this drags on, the more it feels like my life is being cut short, you know?โ€

For someone saying that, werenโ€™t you the one who started with small talk that dragged things out in the first place?

You said youโ€™d get straight to the point a moment ago, but the conversation has gone way off track, and Iโ€™m a little confused too.

โ€œโ€ฆUgh. I really donโ€™t want that girl to take a shine to me.โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s that girl?โ€

โ€œof course! โ€ฆKyaa!โ€

Noticing Kanade standing next to her without realizing it, Takagaki-san looked startled and then jumped up.

โ€œโ€ฆHey, hey. Ayaka-chan. Ayaka-chan.โ€

The light had gone out of Kanadeโ€™s eyes.

โ€œWh-whatโ€ฆ?โ€

Stillโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆI thought I considered you a friend, Takagaki-san.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s eyes seem to flicker on and off all the time, donโ€™t theyโ€ฆ

โ€œDo you consider me a friend, Takagaki-san?โ€

โ€ฆIf the lights in a room were flickering like that, Iโ€™d replace the bulbs.ใ€€
