Episode 30 – Hospitality

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After dinner, I left Kanade and my mother chatting happily in the living room and went back to my room to study.

To be honest, I wanted to talk with Kanade a little longerโ€ฆ but I knew that if I gave in to that immediate urge, my future would be obvious without even having to think about it, so I decided to hold back.

My quiet room, where the only sound was the ticking of the clock.

As I concentrated on my studies for a whileโ€ฆ I heard the sound of a door opening downstairs.

Thatโ€™s when I finally checked the clock to see what time it was.

It was 10:00 p.m.

โ€œโ€ฆI was able to concentrate today.โ€

Lately, whenever Iโ€™m inside, Iโ€™ve been feeling this strange sensation like someoneโ€™s staring at me, so my studying hasnโ€™t been going very well, but today was different.

Not only did I not feel that gaze I usually sense, but I also didnโ€™t have that chill running down my spine like when I have a fever.

Things are going pretty well.

โ€œโ€ฆWell, Iโ€™m probably just overthinking it.โ€

Thereโ€™s no way anyone would go out of their way to secretly film a social outcast like me.

Besides, I donโ€™t even remember inviting anyone into this room recently.

โ€ฆI must have been feeling stressed and depressed because the test is coming up, which made me overly sensitive.

Still, if I managed to get through it today, I feel like Iโ€™ll be okay from tomorrow on.

โ€œโ€ฆCome to think of it, I wonder if Dadโ€™s home yet.โ€

Lately, Dadโ€”who had been deeply lamenting his promotion to section chiefโ€”has been coming home even later since the promotion.

On top of that, apparently he doesnโ€™t get overtime pay anymore because of the promotionโ€ฆ and heโ€™s been complaining about that nonstop.

โ€œโ€ฆI wonder if Kanadeโ€™s home yet?โ€

Setting Dad aside, I wonder if Kanade is still home.

No, she probably isnโ€™t.

After all, itโ€™s too dangerous to let a girl her age come home alone at this hour.

โ€ฆBut if thatโ€™s the case, she could have at least said something to let me know she was leaving.

Well, I guess she was being considerate since I was focused on my studies.

โ€œAkkun. I made a late-night snack. Want some?โ€

โ€œYeah. Iโ€™ll take one.โ€

Suddenly, the door to my room swung open, and Kanade walked in carrying a large plate with two rice balls on it.

Looking closer, I saw she was holding another rice ball in the hand not holding the plate.

She must have been feeling a little peckish herself and had been eating it on her way here.

Thatโ€™s so bad mannersโ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

โ€œKanade, you didnโ€™t go home?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

Kanade nodded happily.

โ€œAuntie said if I wanted to focus on my studies, I should stay over tonight. I asked Mom, and she said it was okay. So I stayed.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOh.โ€

Without me even realizing it, things had somehow progressed so far that I couldnโ€™t even come up with a proper response.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™m going to stay at your place tonight.โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€

โ€œI already took a shower a little while ago.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€œYeah. I smell just like you.โ€

โ€œYou doโ€ฆ?โ€

The shampoo I usually use is for men. There should have been womenโ€™s shampoo in the bathroom that my mom uses, but maybe she accidentally grabbed the wrong one.

โ€œAlso, I borrowed your gym uniform to wear as pajamas.โ€

โ€œLooks like it.โ€

โ€œAs for the sizeโ€ฆ itโ€™s a little tight around the chest.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI guess so.โ€

I glanced briefly at Kanadeโ€™s chest and immediately looked away.

โ€œAlso, Iโ€™m going to sleep on a futon in your room tonight.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAuntie told me to. If Auntie says so, thereโ€™s nothing I can do about it, right?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œHehehe.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo way.โ€

I looked down.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo way, Kanade.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆEven if you say no, thereโ€™s nothing I can do about it. Auntie said so. Itโ€™s none other than Auntie whoโ€™s saying it, right? In that case, I have no choice but to obey. After all, Auntie said so.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆItโ€™s absolutely out of the question.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmph.โ€

I let out a deep sigh.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThe idea of you sleeping on a futonโ€ฆโ€

That was the one thing I simply couldnโ€™t accept.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œYou should sleep in the bed. Iโ€™ll take the futon. If you lay the futon directly on the floor, it wonโ€™t be cushioned, and your body will feel stiff the next morning. Kanadeโ€ฆ you need to get some proper rest.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

Kanade was gazing at me with a dreamy look. Her voice sounded a little feverish.

โ€œAkkun. Today, I think Iโ€™m going to sleep more soundly than I ever have in my entire life.โ€

โ€œWhat are you talking about, Kanade?โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be in trouble if you donโ€™t do that.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œLetting you stay at my place means exactly that.โ€

Now that Kanade was staying at my place, there was no way she could wake up the next morning without being fully recovered.

With that resolve, I was letting her stay in this room for the night.

โ€œโ€ฆW-what do you mean?โ€

However, it seemed Kanade didnโ€™t quite grasp my intentions.

โ€œKanade, nice to have you here tonight.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆY-yes.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to take good care of you so that youโ€™ll want to stay at this house again.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehehe.โ€

Kanade smiled shyly.
