Episode 66 – Coordinate

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

The day after I promised Kanadeโ€™s mother that I would help her write a nonfiction novel about Kanade, I was relaxing and studying in my room.

Ideally, I wanted to release the sequel to the nonfiction novel as soon as possible so as not to miss the window of opportunity, but it seemed Kanadeโ€™s mother had plans to travel to the countryside for a lecture today, soโ€”reluctantlyโ€”our interview plans had to be postponed.

So, in the end, I ended up welcoming Kanade over to my house as usual today for our study session.

I woke up an hour ago, but since I wasnโ€™t very hungry, I skipped breakfast and have been holed up in my room, studying hard.

My parentsโ€ฆ theyโ€™ve probably already left the house for work by now.

That meant Iโ€™d have to make breakfast myself, and with that thought making me feel even more reluctant to eatโ€ฆ

Knock, knock

Someone knocked on the door to my room.

Is it Mom?

Wondering thatโ€ฆ

โ€œYes?โ€

I answered from behind the door.

โ€œA-kun. Good morning.โ€

โ€ฆThe face that peeked in from the other side of the door, which swung open with a clank, was Kanadeโ€™s.

โ€œOh, Kanade. Good morning.โ€

โ€œCome on. Iโ€™ve been waiting downstairs the whole time, but you just wouldnโ€™t come down.โ€

Kanade was upset.

โ€ฆWait, so sheโ€™d been waiting in the living room the whole time?

I thought she just stopped by before school during the first semesterโ€ฆ but come to think of it, sheโ€™s been making breakfast for me every day during summer break, too.

โ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Could it be that she has too much free time?

โ€œAnyway, why donโ€™t you just eat breakfast? I canโ€™t do the dishes right now.โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€

โ€œHehe. Starting tomorrow, donโ€™t use the โ€˜summer vacationโ€™ excuseโ€”make sure to come down to the living room properly, okay?โ€

โ€œOh, okay.โ€

After that, I went to the living room with Kanade, ate the breakfast sheโ€™d prepared for me, and decided to chat with her there for a while.

โ€œโ€ฆCome to think of it, Kanade, that outfit really suits you today.โ€

After chatting for about thirty minutesโ€ฆ I decided to compliment Kanade on her outfit for the day.

Kanade was wearing a white sleeveless dress.

Since she usually wears outfits featuring the wide-leg pants that are trendy these days, it struck me as something of a novelty.

โ€ฆThat said, even though it felt unusual, the outfit actually suited her very well.

Kanadeโ€™s skin is so pale itโ€™s as if sheโ€™s never been exposed to the sun, her arms are so slender they look like they might snap if I even touched them lightly, and above all, the white dress perfectly matches her delicate image.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAh, A-kun. Thatโ€™s embarrassing.โ€

As I stared intently at Kanadeโ€™s outfit, she blushed and looked away.

I wonder whatโ€™s going on?

โ€œโ€ฆAhem. To be honest, Iโ€™m really happy that you complimented me, A-kun.โ€

After clearing her throat, Kanade said this in a polite tone and smiled.

โ€œButโ€ฆ thereโ€™s a reason I came dressed like this today.โ€

โ€œIs there a reason?โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆYou see, Ayaka-chan actually invited me to go have lunch with her today.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€ฆBut I wasnโ€™t invited.

It seems the two of them are really close now. โ€ฆLeaving me out of it.

โ€œSo, Akkun, you should go change your clothes soon, too.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say โ€˜huh?โ€™ I was invited to go eat by Ayaka-chan. Youโ€™re invited too, Akkun.โ€

โ€ฆOh, I see. I was invited after all. Phew.

โ€œGot it. Iโ€™ll go get changed right away.โ€

โ€œOkay. Oh, wait a sec.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll decide what youโ€™re going to wear.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll decide what youโ€™re going to wear.โ€

โ€œNo, I can handle that myselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™ll decide what youโ€™re going to wear.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆOkay.โ€

With her being so pushy like this, I wonder what would happen if I kept saying no?

Could it be that Kanade would just keep repeating the same thing over and over until I said โ€œokayโ€?

โ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m kind of curious.

โ€œWell then, letโ€™s hurry up and go to your room!โ€

Kanade stood up.
