Episode 6 – School

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

The next morning, I woke up at my usual time and went through my morning routine of studying.

After studying for about an hour, I went to the living room, ate the breakfast my mom had made, and then left the house.

On the way, I studied again while walking and looking at my phone, and before I knew it, I had arrived at the station.

It was while I was staring blankly at my phone, waiting for the train to arrive.

โ€œAkkun. Akkun.โ€

A familiar voice called out from behind me.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAh, Kanade.โ€

โ€œGood morning!โ€

When I turned around, there she wasโ€”Kanade.

โ€œGood morning. What a coincidence.โ€

We hadnโ€™t planned to meet, so I never expected weโ€™d be waiting for the same train.

โ€œIt really is. What an amazing coincidence. It almost feels like fate.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo, itโ€™s not quite that extreme.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t help but feel itโ€™s fate!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah.โ€

Ever since I reunited with Kanade yesterday, Iโ€™ve been thinking about this a little: somehow, compared to when we were kids, Kanade seems to have become a lot more intimidating overall.

Well, since sheโ€™s always had a bit of a pushy personality, Iโ€™m taking it pretty positivelyโ€ฆ but I donโ€™t know. Sometimes, sheโ€™s just a little scary.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun. Is something wrong?โ€

โ€œHuh? โ€ฆOh, no, itโ€™s nothing.โ€

โ€œReally? You donโ€™t look so good. Want to take a break?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine, Iโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œAre you sure? You shouldnโ€™t push yourself too hard.โ€

โ€ฆI never thought Kanade would worry about my health.

โ€œWell, the trainโ€™s here. Letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

We boarded the train that had just arrived.

โ€œAkkun.โ€

There had been no conversation between us for a while, but Kanade finally spoke up.

โ€œIs school fun?โ€

It was such an abrupt question.

โ€œItโ€™s not like itโ€™s fun or anything. School is a place to study hard, right?โ€

And studying isnโ€™t exactly fun.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAkkun. Are you being bullied by your classmates or something?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

It was such a leap in the conversation.

I couldnโ€™t help but widen my eyes in surprise.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo, not really.โ€

โ€œReally? But even though we just saw each other again yesterday, you donโ€™t seem to be having as much fun as you used to, Akkun.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWho do you think is to blame for that?

โ€œThatโ€™s why I got worried.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m fine. Iโ€™m not being bullied or anything.โ€

โ€œReally? You shouldnโ€™t push yourself too hard.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not pushing myselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIf anything happens, you should talk to me.โ€

โ€œIf I talk to you, will you do something about it?โ€

โ€œOf course.โ€

Kanade gave a bright smile.

โ€œIf itโ€™s for none other than you, Akkun, I can do anything, you know?โ€

I see.

If thatโ€™s the case, thereโ€™s no way I can talk to her about it.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKanade, arenโ€™t you the one who acted without reading the room after school yesterday? Are you okay?โ€

As I looked out the train window at the scenery, I suddenly remembered what happened after school yesterday.

Yesterday, Kanade was invited out to hang out by many of our classmatesโ€”everyone except meโ€”but in the end, she turned them all down and stopped by my house.

She must have prioritized spending time with meโ€”someone whoโ€™s at the very bottom of the class hierarchyโ€”over spending time with her other classmates.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆPeople might think Iโ€™m getting too big for my shoesโ€

โ€œWhat would happen if people thought you were getting too big for your britches?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou might get bullied.โ€

โ€œHaha. Right, right.โ€

Kanade laughed.

โ€œFrom someone whoโ€™s nearly died, getting bullied by some high schoolers is nothing.โ€

โ€ฆI wonder.

From Kanade right now, I sense a presence comparable to a soldier who survived the battlefield and returned home.

โ€œโ€ฆNo way. You canโ€™t let yourself get bullied.โ€

โ€œHm?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆNow that youโ€™ve finally recovered from your illness and can enjoy school life again, You only get to experience school life once, so you have to enjoy it.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s eyes widened at my words.

โ€œYouโ€™re saying that, A-kun?โ€

Then, Kanade fired back with a valid point.

Itโ€™s true that just a moment ago, I said school is a place for studying, not for having fun. For someone like me to tell Kanade to enjoy herselfโ€ฆ thatโ€™s a contradiction if ever there was one.

โ€œโ€ฆWell then, if youโ€™re going to enjoy school life too, Iโ€™ll enjoy it too.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIs that so?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Kanade nodded firmly.

โ€œWeโ€™re in this together, after all.โ€

I see. A brand-new backstory just popped into my head.

Soon, the train arrived at the station closest to our school.

โ€œAh.โ€

Just as we passed through the ticket gates, I remembered something.

โ€œCome to think of it, Kanade, didnโ€™t you leave something in my room yesterday?โ€

I asked as I rummaged through my bag.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKanade?โ€

โ€œAh. โ€ฆYeah. I might have left my charger.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right. Here.โ€

I held out the AC adapter Iโ€™d taken from my bag, but Kanade hesitated to take it.

โ€œItโ€™s fine, you know. You couldโ€™ve just used the AC adapter yourself, Akkun. Itโ€™s just a consumable item.โ€

โ€œNo way. I have to be thorough about things like this.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s precisely because itโ€™s youโ€ฆ that I want to be thorough.โ€

โ€œWell, I guess I have no choice then!โ€

In a complete turnaround from her earlier reluctance, Kanade snatched the AC adapter from my hand with a beaming smile.

โ€œAkkun! What are you spacing out for?! Come on, come on, letโ€™s hurry to school!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYouโ€™re suddenly super energetic.โ€

Itโ€™s been a little over a day since we reunited.

I still donโ€™t seem to be able to keep up with Kanadeโ€™s high spirits now that sheโ€™s back.
