Episode 8 – sobbing

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œWhat? Ichinose san, do you have a problem?โ€

Although Kadokura had taken a step back earlier, this time she was clearly showing her displeasure toward Kanade.

Well, if I, standing right next to her, noticed Kanadeโ€™s behavior, thereโ€™s no way Kadokuraโ€”who was face-to-face with herโ€”could have missed it.

Perhaps as payback for being glared at, Kadokura was glaring back at Kanade with all her might.

โ€ฆKadokura is a stunningly beautiful girl who belongs to the top tier of this class.

However, despiteโ€”or perhaps because ofโ€”her striking looks, she occasionally displays an attitude that goes beyond just being โ€œstrong-willedโ€; itโ€™s more accurately described as arrogant, and it causes trouble for her classmates.

As someone whoโ€™s about as invisible as they come in this class, Iโ€™d been lucky enough to avoid becoming her target until todayโ€ฆ

โ€œKadokura-san, isnโ€™t that a little off?โ€

Seeing her acting so brazenly, I couldnโ€™t help but step in between the two of them.

โ€œTo begin with, you were the one who started this. Who wouldnโ€™t be offended if someone badmouthed their friend?โ€

โ€œHuh? I wasnโ€™t talking to you.โ€

โ€œI figured.โ€

โ€œIf you know thatโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t want to talk to someone like you eitherโ€”someone who can only mock others.โ€

โ€œHuh!?โ€

โ€œWell, that makes sense. That kind of mocking remark only works among friends where that kind of inside joke is allowed. Kanade and you only spoke briefly yesterday. As for you and me, this is our first conversation. Talking to someone like that in such a casual toneโ€”I canโ€™t help but think youโ€™re a person with no tact.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆW-what? What?!โ€

โ€œHow should I put itโ€ฆ seeing you like this makes me think youโ€™ve only ever lived in a world where that kind of behavior is acceptable, even with people youโ€™ve just met. Youโ€™ve been spoiled, havenโ€™t you?โ€

I said what I thought after seeing her attitudeโ€ฆ but I was starting to regret it a little.

โ€ฆMaybe โ€œspoiledโ€ was a bit of an overstatement.
ใ€€

After all, Iโ€™m not exactly a self-made, upstanding person myself.

โ€œSorry. I went too far.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆTch.โ€

I apologized honestly, but it seems Iโ€™ve successfully earned her resentment.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIf you really feel bad about it, get down on your knees right here.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œKneel down. Kneel down! Hurry up and do it!โ€

โ€œI guess I could do it, but would that really satisfy you?โ€

โ€œHuh!?โ€

โ€œI mean, kneeling down is just an act intended to make the other person submitโ€ฆ so in the end, you havenโ€™t refuted my argument that you were spoiled, have you?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIn other words, even if you make the other person submit, itโ€™s like youโ€™re admitting youโ€™re just a spoiled brat. Is that really an acceptable way of thinking for a high school student?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆDamn it. I went too far again.

โ€œWaaaaaah!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI made her cry.

I panicked.

My classmates, who had come to school and were watching the situation unfold, were alsoโ€ฆ speechless.

Come to think of it, this might have been the first time Iโ€™d ever seen Kadokura-san cryโ€”sheโ€™d always been so haughty ever since joining this class.

โ€œCome on, A-kun. You went too far.โ€

It was Kanade who comforted Kadokura-san as she continued to cry.

โ€œThere, there. Itโ€™s okay now, Kadokura-san.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUgh.โ€

โ€œCome on. Youโ€™re crying so hard, youโ€™re ruining your cute face.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œThere, try looking up.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆ!โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe. Just as I thought. Kadokura-san, youโ€™re so cute.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWhay is she forced to looked?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆN-no, thatโ€™s notโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Kadokura-san.โ€

โ€œI-itโ€™s fineโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆPerhaps because she was looking at Kanadeโ€™s exceptionally beautiful face up close, even though they were the same gender, Kadokura-sanโ€™s anger seemed to have subsided.

โ€œJ-justโ€ฆ next time, Iโ€™d like you to be a little gentlerโ€ฆ maybe.โ€

โ€œBut, Akkunโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYes.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh.

To be honest, it was because Kanade glared at Kadokura-san that I ended up making her cry, right?

In a way, Kanade herself is the one who created this situation, isnโ€™t she?

โ€ฆโ€ฆI wonder. This whole โ€œstirring up trouble just to resolve itโ€ vibe.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry. But I think thereโ€™s some truth to what you said, Akkun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah. Iโ€™m sorry, too.โ€

โ€œFrom now on, letโ€™s try to have nicer conversations, okay?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆEven though I, the troublemaker, got involved, it seems the situation has settled down without incident.

My classmates had lost interest in our exchange and had completely gone back to their usual small talk.

โ€œHey. Since weโ€™re here, why donโ€™t we go somewhere together after school today?โ€

Kanade suggested to Kadokura-san.

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ?โ€

Kadokura-san looked at me, looking a bit confused.

โ€œHehe. Is that okay?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆY-yeah, sure.โ€

โ€œThanks, Kadokura-sanโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆThat was meaningful.

Well, whatever.

Iโ€™d ended up talking to people more than usual, so I was a little tired.

I decided to leave Kanade and the others behind and head to my own seat.

โ€œA-kun.โ€

โ€œHya!โ€

The moment I sat down, Kanade called out to me from behind, and I jumped.

โ€œWh-whatโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehe.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s smile should have been cute, but it felt somehow eerieโ€ฆ

โ€œIโ€™m glad you stepped in. Thanksโ€ฆโ€

But the words she spoke were just a perfectly ordinary thank-you.

โ€œโ€ฆNo. Iโ€™m the one who should be sorry. I said earlier that I wanted you to enjoy school life, but I almost ended up causing trouble.โ€

โ€œHehe. Itโ€™s okay. That was nothing.โ€

โ€ฆShe really gives off this air of being a big shot.

โ€œโ€ฆThough I might have gotten a little chill.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHm?โ€

Kanade leaned close to my earโ€ฆ

โ€œNext time, why donโ€™t you try lecturing me?โ€

Sheโ€™s saying weird things again.
