Episode 57 – Guilt

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

After apologizing, Takagaki seemed to remember something.

โ€œOh, right. You two areโ€ฆโ€

She muttered as far as that, but didnโ€™t say anything else. Instead, she looked away, looking awkward.

โ€œYeah. Thatโ€™s right.โ€

I didnโ€™t know what Takagaki had been trying to say, but it seemed Kanade understood.

โ€œโ€ฆI see. Well, I suppose hearing bad news about someone you know would make anyone feel a bit sentimental.โ€

โ€œHehe. Maybe so.โ€

โ€ฆI tilted my head in confusion.

โ€œIn that case, Iโ€™m sorry for making you worry. But donโ€™t worry. My brother is just in the hospital.โ€

Takagakiโ€™s wordsโ€ฆ brought a sense of relief that the worst had been avoided.

However, I realized I shouldnโ€™t let my guard down just yet.

After all, there was no doubt that her brother had suffered some misfortune that led to his hospitalization.

โ€œโ€ฆTakagaki san, what exactly happened to your brother?โ€

โ€œA car accident.โ€

โ€ฆSo thatโ€™s what it was.

โ€œThe road near my houseโ€ฆ the shoulder is narrow, and itโ€™s a spot where cars can barely pass each otherโ€ฆ but a lot of people drive pretty fast there.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThere are apartment buildings nearby. People who live in places like that donโ€™t know the unwritten rules of the local community, do they? So, thereโ€™s no end to the people who drive like that.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s dangerous.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆOn top of that, there was a sudden downpour that day at that time. You know, like that recent news story about flooding from torrential rain?โ€

โ€œYeah, I remember.โ€

โ€œBasically, visibility was terrible.โ€

โ€ฆTakagaki looked down.

โ€œโ€ฆWhen I got the call at home saying my brother had been in an accident, I felt like Iโ€™d lost all sense of being alive.โ€

โ€ฆ

โ€œFortunately, though, his only injury was a broken leg. So heโ€™s in the hospital right now.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThe only other thing I should mention is that the person who hit my brother still hasnโ€™t been found.โ€

โ€œA hit-and-run, huhโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThatโ€™s the whole story of what happened to my brother. Iโ€™m really sorry for worrying you.โ€

Takagaki-san seemed to have regained a little of her cheerfulness.

โ€œEver since that accident, heโ€™s been completely down in the dumps. Then, while he was in the hospital, he saw that plane on the news and muttered that he wanted to go see it. So, as his older sister, I figured Iโ€™d step up and do my part.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆTakagaki-san really is a kind older sister.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆ Iโ€™m really sorry. Thank you. Thanks to you, I think Iโ€™ll get to see him happy again.โ€

Takagaki-san smiled gently as she looked at the printed paper airplane.

Although he had broken his leg, Takagaki-sanโ€™s brother was safe.

If he just focuses on his recovery, just as Takagaki-san saidโ€ฆ heโ€™ll surely regain his old energy someday.

Seeing her expression, I was able to be certain of that.

ใ€€โ€ฆโ€ฆBut.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHey, Ayaka-chan.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆIt seemed Kanade was wrong after all.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIs that really all?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThatโ€™s all.โ€

Takagaki gave a wry smile.

โ€œHeโ€™s in the hospital because he broke his leg in a car accident, and since heโ€™s feeling down, I thought Iโ€™d take a picture of the paper airplane for him. โ€ฆโ€ฆThatโ€™s all.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI suppose so.โ€

Kanade looked down, then glanced up at Takagaki-san.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆBut, was the only reason you decided to go out of your way for your brother really just because you were worried about him?โ€

Takagaki-san looked at Kanade in surprise.

โ€œHmm. โ€ฆโ€ฆHmmm. I donโ€™t know, this is just based on my own experience, butโ€ฆโ€

Kanade crossed her arms and continued.

โ€œโ€ฆYour brotherโ€™s injury is a fracture. Heโ€™s not feeling well right now, but from what Iโ€™ve heard, itโ€™s only a matter of time before heโ€™s discharged.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œBut youโ€™ve been visiting the hospital almost every day, and this time you even went out to take photos of airplanes because your brother said he wanted to see them.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI donโ€™t know how close you two siblings areโ€ฆโ€ฆbut isnโ€™t this a little much?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆShe might be right.

Takagaki must have her own things to do, and going to the hospital every dayโ€ฆโ€ฆfinding the time to go that often must be pretty difficult.

Even I, who had no schedule as a kid, could only visit Kanade once a week.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆDid I say I go to the hospital every day?โ€

โ€œNo. โ€ฆWell, thatโ€™s just my guess.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI guess so.โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

Kanade was peering at Takagaki-san as if observing her.

โ€œThe way you treat your brotherโ€ฆ I get the feeling thereโ€™s something more to it than just the bond between siblings.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhat do you mean?โ€

โ€œI almost died once. โ€ฆIโ€™ve seen too many faces of people trying to put on a brave front. I can just tell, somehow.โ€

Indeed, Kanade had previously picked up on the pained expression on my face when I met her as a child, after sheโ€™d been struck by illness.

She hadnโ€™t missed even the slightest change in my expressionโ€”something even my own parents, whoโ€™d been watching me up close, hadnโ€™t noticed.

โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆ quite a special ability.โ€

โ€œAyaka chanโ€ฆโ€

Perhaps because she was half-convincedโ€ฆ Kanade lowered her head and continued.

โ€œI get a vague sense of guilt from your face.โ€

โ€ฆGuilt, huh.

โ€œโ€ฆAyaka, are you really visiting the hospital because youโ€™re worried about your little brother?โ€
