Episode 28

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œโ€ฆI’m scared.โ€

Trapped inside the room, I curled up on the bed and trembled.

The fear of not being able to leave the room.

The fear of what would happen if I did leave.

The fear of why the door to this roomโ€”which didn’t even have a lockโ€”wouldn’t open.

And above all else.

โ€œWhere the hell was Yukimura?โ€

Iโ€™m sure I checked the hallway and the first floor back then.

There was no one anywhere at the time.

โ€˜Riiingโ€™

The phone rang again.

โ€œW-who is itโ€ฆ Yukimura?โ€

I canโ€™t believe itโ€™s just a coincidence.

But I probably donโ€™t have the option of not answering.

โ€œH-hello?โ€

โ€œMitsuru, what are you doing right now?โ€

โ€œUh, well, Iโ€™m in my room.โ€

โ€œYou canโ€™t come out, can you?โ€

โ€œWhaโ€ฆ you didnโ€™t tell Hayase, did you?โ€

โ€œMitsuru, why did you lie?โ€

I tilted my head at the same question Hayase had asked.

โ€œW-what do you mean, โ€˜lieโ€™?โ€

โ€œMitsuru, you werenโ€™t sleeping, were you?โ€

โ€œN-no, I just happened to wake up.โ€

โ€œReally? You werenโ€™t just pretending to sleep because you wanted me to go home early, were you?โ€

โ€œN-no way. I was feeling sick, too.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not lying about being sick, are you?โ€

โ€œN-no, Iโ€™m not. Thanks to Yukimura, Iโ€™m totally fine now.โ€

โ€œR-really? You got better because of me?โ€

โ€œO-of course. Thanks to Yukimura.”

As her voice brightened before my eyes, Yukimura said, โ€œWell, I guess I have no choice,โ€ and hung up.

And then, almost immediately.

Click.

From the other side of the door, I heard the sound of something being unlocked.

โ€œโ€ฆNo way.โ€

I tentatively placed my hand on the doorknob, and the knobโ€”which hadnโ€™t budged a moment agoโ€”turned with a click.

I moved slowly.

I opened the door as quietly as possible, trying not to make a sound.

โ€œโ€ฆNo oneโ€™s here.โ€

I scanned the quiet hallway, but there was no sign of anyone.

Still, I didnโ€™t let my guard down. I quietly left the room and tiptoed to the living room.

โ€œโ€ฆOh.โ€

โ€œOh, good morning, Mitsuru. Youโ€™re up early.โ€

โ€œMomโ€ฆ Hey, when did you get back yesterday?โ€

โ€œHmm, around sunset, I think. Why do you ask?โ€

โ€œWhat about Yukimuraโ€™s mom?โ€

โ€œThey went their separate ways. But more importantly, you and Yukimuraโ€™s daughter seem to be getting along quite well.โ€

โ€œW-well, not reallyโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to be shy. Look, she even went out of her way to bring you a bento this morning.โ€

Mom handed me a box wrapped in white cloth.

โ€œโ€ฆYukimura did this?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€

โ€œWhen?โ€

โ€œJust a little while ago. She said sheโ€™d say hi to you before heading homeโ€”didnโ€™t you run into her?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

I see. So she really did come by the house after all.

Those twoโ€”even though itโ€™s someone elseโ€™s house, they just come and go as if it were their own.

โ€ฆIf Shiratori starts hanging out here full-time too, Iโ€™m done for.

I have to stop that from happening at all costs.

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m heading to school now.โ€

โ€œAh, wait a minute. Here.โ€

This time, she handed me a sandwich wrapped in plastic wrap.

โ€œHuh, whatโ€™s this?โ€

โ€œBreakfast.โ€

โ€œWhy are you suddenly giving me this?โ€

โ€œA friend of yours brought it over. Honestly, youโ€™re surprisingly popular, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWho brought it?โ€

โ€œUm, she said her name was Shirotori.โ€

No way.

โ€œHuh, really?โ€

โ€œShe seems like a nice girl. But donโ€™t go overboard.โ€

My mom, oblivious to my feelings, disappeared into the back of the kitchen with a smile on her face.

I never thought Shirotori would show up too.

So, does that mean this house isnโ€™t safe anymore either?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m leaving.โ€

I said it weakly and walked out the front door.

โ€œOh, good morning, Mitchi.โ€

As if to rub salt in the wound, Shirotori was waiting right there as I stepped out the front door.
