Episode 29

Iโ€™ve Been Working My Hardest as Manager of the Girlsโ€™ Track and Field Team, but Ever Since I Retired, the Team Members Have Been Coming at Me Like Crazy!?

โ€œHey, hey, how was the sandwich?โ€

โ€œItโ€ฆ it was good.โ€

โ€œHey, hey, are you always late in the morning?โ€

โ€œW-well, I was tired.โ€

โ€œHey, hey, your mom is really pretty, isn’t she?โ€

โ€œI-I guess so.โ€

On the way to school.

I’m being bombarded with questions from Shiratori.

โ€œHey, hey.โ€

โ€œWhat is it now?โ€

โ€œDid Mai come to your house this morning?โ€

The atmosphere suddenly changed.

โ€œHuh? W-why?โ€

โ€œI saw her coming out of your house.โ€

โ€œOh, really? Did she forget something yesterday or something?โ€

โ€œYou havenโ€™t seen her?โ€

โ€œN-no, I havenโ€™t.โ€

โ€œHmm. Well, guess I was overthinking it.โ€

Shiratoriโ€™s serious expression vanished, and she broke into a beaming smile.

โ€œโ€ฆSo, why were you at my place, Shiratori?โ€

โ€œBecause I was feeling lonely yesterday. By the way, is it okay if I come pick you up every day from now on?โ€

โ€œW-well, that might be a bit muchโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine if itโ€™s me, right? Or do you have plans with Mai or Masa?โ€

โ€œN-no, I donโ€™t, I donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThen thereโ€™s no problem. Also, just to confirmโ€ฆโ€

โ€œConfirm?โ€

โ€œRomance is allowed starting today, right?โ€

Shiratori looked up at me with a blush on her cheeks.

โ€œโ€ฆWell, I guess so.โ€

โ€œThen itโ€™s okay for me to ask Mitchi out on a date, right?โ€

โ€œMe?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t play dumb. Iโ€™ve only ever been to the convenience store with you, Mitchi. And on our days off, we were always at club practice. Iโ€™d really like to go to an amusement park or something.โ€

Now, how should I handle an invitation like this?

If I turn her down the wrong way, I might end up rubbing her the wrong way.

โ€œUm, amusement parks are pretty expensive, arenโ€™t they? I donโ€™t have a part-time job, so I donโ€™t have any money.โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s fine. My parents gave me a gift as a reward for making it to the National High School Championships.โ€

โ€œNo, I canโ€™t exactly let a girl treat me, can I?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not really the case these days. Besides, my parents told me to use that money to give back to the people whoโ€™ve helped me.โ€

โ€œW-well, then maybe some snacks for the teacher?โ€

โ€œI already bought those.โ€

โ€œT-then maybe for the club members?โ€

โ€œI already gave Mai and Masa shoes and stuff.โ€

โ€œW-well, then maybe some clothes for me?โ€

โ€œOf course I have a present for you, too. But that alone isnโ€™t enough, is it?โ€

Iโ€™m totally full, though.

โ€œShiratori, I donโ€™t really need anything.โ€

โ€œMitchii, youโ€™re the one who changed my life.โ€

โ€œlife? Thatโ€™s a bit of an exaggeration.โ€

“No, really. Until junior high, I was terrible at everything I tried. I was terrible at sports and the piano I took lessons inโ€”everything.โ€

โ€œBut youโ€™re good at school, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because I thought, โ€˜At least I should be average at studying,โ€™ so I worked hard at that. But my parents were always disappointed when they saw me like that.โ€

โ€œBut you worked hard and got results, didnโ€™t you, Shiratori?โ€

โ€œI was only able to work that hard thanks to you, Mitchi. My parents were happy too, and Iโ€™m truly grateful. Thatโ€™s why I want to repay you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re exaggerating.โ€

โ€œNo, I really want to.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Overwhelmed by Shirotoriโ€™s passion, I asked tentatively.

โ€œWhat exactly do you want to do?โ€

As soon as I asked that question, Shirotori replied.

โ€œI want to give everything I have to you, Mitchi.โ€
