Episode 37 – Each other’s names

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

From the moment I stepped through the school gates, Hoshimiyaโ€™s pressure had been building.

No, waitโ€”it wasnโ€™t Hoshimiya.

According to her, it was Rino.

The current top idol, who was trying to force that name out of my mouth, was walking right beside me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s practice during lunch break today.โ€

โ€œPractice what?โ€

โ€œCalling each other by first names.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t give me assignments that are harder than classwork.โ€

Hoshimiyaโ€”no, Hoshimiya is fine for now. In my mind, sheโ€™s still Ms. Hoshimiya. Calling each other by first names is a mid-story event in a romance comedy. It shouldnโ€™t happen recklessly.

Even in I Donโ€™t Need Youth!!, it took seven volumes before the protagonist called the heroine by her first name.

Seven volumes, mind you.

Thatโ€™s a substantial build-up in terms of page count.

And weโ€™re trying to do that just over a month after meeting. The pacing is glitching. At an editorial meeting, this is the kind of thing that would get shut down with, โ€œThe readers arenโ€™t mentally prepared for this yet.โ€

But Hoshimiya, sitting next to me, wonโ€™t stop.

โ€œIโ€™ve been calling you Seita the whole time, you know?โ€

โ€œYou just started calling me that on your own, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYou can call me too.โ€

โ€œSo itโ€™s permission-based, huh?โ€

โ€œYeah. Special permission.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need it.โ€

โ€œYou do.โ€

Hoshimiya is smiling.

But the expectation deep in her eyes was so earnest that I couldnโ€™t just brush it off.

A name.

Just a way of addressing someone.

I should have been able to think of it that way, but to me, it felt strangely heavy.

A long time ago, there was a girl I liked. I tried to call her by her first name, but in the end, I couldnโ€™t bring myself to do it. I was afraid of closing the distance, so I faked it by using her last name followed by โ€œ-san.โ€ As I kept faking it, she was the one who ended up pulling away.

If I donโ€™t get close, I wonโ€™t get hurt.

Thatโ€™s what I thought, but by not getting close, there are things I lose.

Iโ€™ve only recently begun to realize such obvious truths, little by little.

Lunchtime.

We headed to our usual spot behind the warehouse.

Our home and vacation house.

In a place where even the official name is a complete mess, I opened my lunchbox. Hoshimiya sat down next to me. Today, we were even closer than usual.

โ€œYouโ€™re close.โ€

โ€œIf you call me by my name, Iโ€™ll move back a little.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t use that as a bargaining chip.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll stay close until you call me.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that blackmail?โ€

โ€œPlease.โ€

Hoshimiya tugged on my sleeve.

In her fingertips, there was not just her usual assertiveness, but a hint of anxiety as well.

โ€œI want Seita to call me Rino.โ€

Her voice was soft.

โ€œNot as Hoshimiya Rino, but just Rino.โ€

Hearing that, it was hard to back down.

Not her stage name, but the name of just one girl.

I was afraid to say it.

I felt like the moment I said it, something would change.

It felt like Iโ€™d be drawing a clear line across the distance weโ€™d kept vague until now.

But Hoshimiya was waiting.

Waiting for me to cross that line.

I set down my chopsticks and exhaled.

โ€œโ€ฆRiโ€”โ€

My voice caught in my throat.

Hoshimiyaโ€™s fingertips twitched.

โ€œRi?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆRino-san.โ€

I said it.

Iโ€™d said it.

At that moment, every member of my inner โ€œYouth Complex Committeeโ€ stood to attention.

Agenda: Seita Takahara finally calls the heroine by her name.

Verdict: Immediate removal from the courtroom due to excessive youth concentration.

I collapsed inside.

In reality, Hoshimiya was completely frozen.

Her large eyes were wide open, her mouth slightly parted, staring at me. A few seconds later, her cheeks began to slowly turn red.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œOne more time.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œPlease.โ€

โ€œOnce is my limit.โ€

โ€œOne time isnโ€™t enough for me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s way too wasteful.โ€

Hoshimiya looked down and covered her face with both hands.

Her shoulders were trembling slightly.

โ€œRinoโ€ฆ Seitaโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who made me call her that, Hoshimiya.โ€

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou just called me Hoshimiya.โ€

โ€œNo, I meanโ€ฆโ€

Hoshimiya looked up, seeming happy yet slightly dissatisfied.

โ€œSeita, Iโ€™m Rino.โ€

The moment she said that, I felt like another escape route had been blocked.

I looked away, trying to escape into my lunch box.

But Hoshimiya wouldnโ€™t let me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYes.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to call you Seita. You call me Rino, too.โ€

Her words were sweet.

But they werenโ€™t an order.

They were a request.

So, leaving my chopsticks where they were, I steeled myself.

โ€œโ€ฆRino.โ€

Just her first name.

Even though it was my own voice, it felt as if it didnโ€™t belong to me.

Hoshimiyaโ€™s face turned bright red in an instant.

She froze completely, still clutching her lunchbox.

โ€œHoshimiya-saโ€”Rino?โ€

I corrected myself.

I corrected myself.

Itโ€™s over.

Thereโ€™s no going back now.

Rino slowly looked at me.

Her eyes were glistening.

But her expression was so happy it looked like it might break into a smile.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll never forget today for the rest of my life.โ€

โ€œI knew that.โ€

โ€œThe day you first called me Rino.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re quick to turn things into anniversaries.โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s important.โ€

Instead of grabbing my sleeve, today she gently touched the back of my hand.

Just our fingertips touching.

She wasnโ€™t holding my hand.

But even that was enough to make my heart race.

I never thought that just calling her name would change the distance between us so much.

No, maybe I actually knew it all along.

Thatโ€™s why Iโ€™d been avoiding it all this time.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œCall me again.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re asking for a lot.โ€

โ€œI want to hear it in Seitaโ€™s voice.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆRino.โ€

This time, it came out a little more naturally than the first time.

Rino closed her eyes and placed her hand over her heart.

โ€œI canโ€™t. I like you.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t come stop my heart during lunch break.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s me whose heartโ€™s been stopped.โ€

The Rino who said that and laughed wasnโ€™t the usual Hoshimiya Rino.

She wasnโ€™t the famous idol shining in the center of the classroom, nor the celebrity smiling perfectly on set.

She was just a girl who looked utterly delighted to have me call her name.

The prep bell rang.

We packed up our lunches and left the area behind the storage room.

In the hallway leading back to the classroom, Rino moved a little closer to my side.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆRino.โ€

When I called her name, she smiled happily again.

Overwhelmed by the power of that smile, I looked away.

โ€œIt feels strange, doesnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œGet used to it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll try.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll call you โ€˜Seitaโ€™ more often, too.โ€

โ€œYou already call me that plenty.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not enough.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s scary.โ€

As we entered the classroom, Hara and Shinozaki immediately looked our way.

โ€œHuh? Rino, arenโ€™t you blushing like crazy?โ€

โ€œTakahara-kun, what did you do?โ€

โ€œNothing at all.โ€

Before I could answer, Rino smiled happily.

โ€œSeita just called me Rino.โ€

The classroom erupted in a buzz of excitement in an instant.

Hara shouted.

โ€œWait, finally!?โ€

Shinozaki clapped, still looking sleepy.

โ€œCongrats! Thatโ€™s progress, huh?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not progress.โ€

โ€œTakahara-kun, did you call her Rino?โ€

Hara grinned and pressed in on me.

I took a step back.

โ€œNo, it just happened naturally.โ€

โ€œThen call her that right now.โ€

โ€œIs this a public execution?โ€

Rino looked at me.

Her face was full of anticipation.

Please donโ€™t.

I canโ€™t run away when she looks at me like that.

I let out a small sigh.

โ€œโ€ฆRino.โ€

The atmosphere in the classroom exploded.

Hara banged on her desk, Shinozaki muttered, โ€œThatโ€™s so high school,โ€ and the boys around us shot me indescribable glances.

Rino covered her face with both hands, her cheeks flushed all the way to her ears.

โ€œSeita, thatโ€™s cheating in the classroomโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who made me say it.โ€

โ€œBut Iโ€™m happy.โ€

I sat down at my desk and buried my face in my hands.

My peaceful high school life was long gone.

And today, I had finally started calling Hoshimiya Rinoโ€ฆ Rino.

More than friends.

Less than lovers.

In that ambiguous space, only her name had taken the first step.

But strangely, I didnโ€™t mind it.

If anything, I felt a little warmth deep in my chest.

Just before class started, a small note slid over from my right.

โ€œSeita, please call me Rino from now on.โ€

After hesitating for a moment, I wrote my reply at the bottom.

โ€œIโ€™ll do my best, Rino.โ€

When I handed the note back, Rino buried her face in her desk.

Her shoulders were shaking.

She was probably laughing.

No, maybe she was just so happy she was falling apart.

Staring at the blackboard, I silently apologized again to the protagonist of I Donโ€™t Need Youth!!.

This โ€œcalling each other by nameโ€ event is way too powerful.

Itโ€™s definitely worth dragging out over multiple volumes.

And I realized, just a little bit, that I had already reached the point of no return.
