Episode 25 – Mutual friends

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€ฆโ€ฆI thought I heard someone calling my name, but โ€œAtsushiโ€ is such a common name that it was probably just someone else being called.

If I turned around here and it turned out they were calling someone elseโ€ฆ it wouldnโ€™t just be awkwardโ€”I might even end up making a fool of myself.

To begin with, I donโ€™t have many friendsโ€ฆ and I donโ€™t really have the kind of connections where people would spot me out and about and call out to me.

In other words, even if it were someone I knew, turning around here would offer virtually no benefits and carry a high risk of causing problems.

After weighing my options, I decided to ignore the voice Iโ€™d heard from behind.

That decision was, from the perspective of my survival strategy, a perfectly rational one.

โ€œHey, Atsushi?โ€

The reason my rational decision came to nothing wasโ€ฆ because the person behind me was actually calling me.

And the person who spokeโ€ฆ was someone I knew, and she had gone out of her way to run right up to me, as if delighted to see me again.

โ€œCome on, Iโ€™m calling you, so at least answer me, okay?โ€

As she said that, the girl who was frowning at meโ€ฆ looked familiar.

A figure that could easily rival Kanadeโ€™s.

Permed hair.

Well-defined features that looked great with a smile.

And a gentle, soft-spoken tone.

โ€œKawashima-sanโ€ฆ? Isnโ€™t that Kawashima-san?โ€

โ€œLong time no see, Atsushi. Itโ€™s been since we graduated from middle school, hasnโ€™t it?โ€

Her name was Kawashima Kaho.

She was one of the few people I could actually call a friend.

โ€œWow, itโ€™s been a while.โ€

โ€œYeah. Since our middle school graduation ceremony, I think?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆA-kun.โ€

As we rejoiced at our reunionโ€ฆ

โ€œAnd who is that over thereโ€ฆ?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s cold voice rang out.

โ€œโ€ฆAh. You donโ€™t remember her, do you?โ€

Of course, I paid no attention to Kanadeโ€™s unusual behavior and gave her a wry smile.

โ€œRememberโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œHer name is Kawashima. Her full name is Kawashima Kaho.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆKawashima. Kahoโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œWaitโ€ฆ could it beโ€ฆโ€

It was Kawashima who noticed first.

โ€œCould it beโ€ฆ Ichinose ?anโ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œWe were in the same class in elementary schoolโ€ฆ but you got sick partway throughโ€ฆ Ichinose san?โ€

Kanade, whose eyes had widened, finally seemed to remember Kawashima.

โ€œโ€ฆCould it be Kaho-chan?โ€

Her eyes glistening, she asked in a trembling voice.

โ€œYes. Itโ€™s Kaho-chan.โ€

Kawashima-san and I went on to the same school for both elementary and middle school.

Since we went to the same elementary schoolโ€ฆ that meant Kanade, who had once studied hard in the same school building, had also known Kawashima-san.

And the two of them used to be pretty close friends.

โ€œLong time no see, Ichinose-san. โ€ฆYouโ€™re feeling better now, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆYeah. Long time no see. Iโ€™m completely back to normal now.โ€

The school Kanade and I attend is one of the top academic institutions in Tokyo.

As a result, I was forced to take a different path from everyone else from elementary and middle schoolโ€”except for Kanade.

Soโ€ฆ this is probably the first time Kanade has reunited with any of my friends from elementary school other than me.

A reunion after more than a decade.

The atmosphere between the two of them feels somewhat distant, considering itโ€™s such an emotional reunion.

Probablyโ€ฆ itโ€™s been so long since they last saw each other that they donโ€™t know what to talk about.

โ€œโ€ฆHey, Kaho-chan.โ€

Kanade continued, trying to show her joy at seeing her old friend again.

โ€œAkkun and Kaho-chanโ€ฆ were you two close in middle school?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

โ€œHey, is that true?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆAn emotional reunion.

After congratulating each other on their current livesโ€ฆ thatโ€™s the next question you ask?

โ€œโ€ฆAh. I see.โ€

At first, Kawashima-sanโ€™s eyes widenedโ€ฆ but then, as if sheโ€™d realized something, she smiled defiantly.

โ€œCould it be that the two of you areโ€ฆ dating?โ€

โ€œD-datingโ€ฆ!?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s face turned bright red.

โ€œN-no way! Weโ€™re not that kind of relationship! Not yet!โ€

โ€œI see. So thatโ€™s not the case. โ€ฆNot yet.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s desperate denial must have looked pretty ridiculous.

Even I almost started laughing.

Just because someone misunderstood that she might be dating me, Kanade was getting way too worked up (lol).

โ€œIchinose-san, please relax. Atsushi and I arenโ€™t that kind of relationship. To put it simply, weโ€™re just business partners.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆThat sounds pretty suggestive.โ€

โ€œBack in middle school, we were the student council president and vice president. โ€ฆAnd back in elementary school, we were the president and vice president of the student council.โ€

โ€œHuh!?โ€

Kanade looked back and forth between my face and Kawashima-sanโ€™s.

โ€œA-kun was the student council vice president!?โ€

โ€ฆWell, considering I always acting so sneaky, itโ€™s no wonder Kanadeโ€™s surprised.

โ€œNo, Ichinose-san. Thatโ€™s not it.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œAtsushi was the president of both the Student Council and the Childrenโ€™s Council.โ€

โ€œWhaaaat!?โ€

โ€œHe was really talented, you know. โ€ฆHonestly, he was a thorn in my side.โ€

Kawashimaโ€™s eyes, filled with resentment, were painful to look at.

Sheโ€™s always been like this. Whenever the opportunity arises, sheโ€™d voice complaints laced with jealousy toward me, using that sarcastic tone typical of Kyoto people.

โ€œโ€ฆThat was a long time ago. I didnโ€™t want to fail my entrance exams, so I was desperate to boost my grades. Most students find both the Student Council and the Childrenโ€™s Council a hassle and donโ€™t want to join. On top of that, being president comes with a lot of responsibility and cuts into your free time, so they hate it even more. Thatโ€™s why I was the perfect person to use.โ€

โ€œOh my, I actually wanted to be president.โ€

โ€ฆCould you please not say anything unnecessary?

โ€œActually, I ran for president myselfโ€ฆ but I lost both times to Atsushi.โ€

โ€œHuh? A kun, you actually won the election?โ€

From the way Kanade phrased it, I could tell she thought there was no way I could win an election where personal popularity was so important.

โ€œโ€ฆAtsushi was unbeatable in elections, wasnโ€™t he?โ€

โ€œUghโ€ฆ thatโ€™s kind of surprising.โ€

โ€œIt wasnโ€™t until after the election was over that I found out heโ€™d been doing all this behind the scenes: researching social networks within the school, understanding the size of each groupโ€™s voter base, calculating the projected vote count for his opponents, and deciding which voter bases he absolutely couldnโ€™t afford to lose.โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s to win, Iโ€™d go that far.โ€

Kanade didnโ€™t say anything, but her eyes seemed to ask, โ€œWhy donโ€™t you apply that to real life, tooโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œHaha. your practical skills are just too good for your own goodโ€ฆ you even managed to fulfill all your campaign promises, after all.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆSince I earned the trust of the students and became president, keeping my promises is only natural.โ€

If you win the election, you donโ€™t have to keep your promises.

Itโ€™s just weird that there are people who actually think that way.

โ€œEnough about me, okay?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

Kanade pouted, looking displeased.

โ€œIโ€™d like to hear more about what you were up to while I was awayโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆHuh.

Looking closely, there was no sparkle in Kanadeโ€™s eyesโ€ฆ?

โ€œFufu.โ€

Kanade gave a faint smile.

โ€œโ€ฆStill, to bump into Ichinose san in a place like thisโ€ฆโ€

Kawashima-san changed the subject.

Actually, from Kawashima-sanโ€™s perspective, her reunion with Kanade must have felt like quite a miracle.

In that sense, the reunion of these twoโ€ฆ

โ€œWellโ€ฆ itโ€™s only about a thirty-minute train ride away.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

I was sure Kanade would describe her reunion with Kawashima-san as โ€œfate.โ€

โ€œIs that so? โ€ฆWhat brings you to the electronics district?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m buying a present for a friend.โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s nice. When did you come back to Japan?โ€

โ€œThis week. โ€ฆWhat brings you here, Kawashima-san?โ€

Come to think of itโ€ฆ

โ€œI have a favorite restaurant in the electronics district. I came here for lunch.โ€

The only person Kanade emphasizes โ€œfateโ€ toโ€ฆ is me, isn’t it?

โ€œHuh, is that so?โ€

Itโ€™s only been a week since I reunited with Kanade, so maybe I just havenโ€™t seen any other examples yetโ€ฆ?

โ€œYeah. โ€ฆSince weโ€™re here, why donโ€™t the two of you join us?โ€

Butโ€ฆ if sheโ€™s only saying this to me, I can kind of understand why sheโ€”someone who hates spiritual ideasโ€”would emphasize โ€œdestiny.โ€

โ€œReally? Is that okay?โ€

โ€ฆThen why does Kanade only emphasize โ€œdestinyโ€ when sheโ€™s talking to me?

โ€œAkkun!โ€

Kanadeโ€™s dazzling eyes locked onto mine.

โ€œWeโ€™re going to that restaurant Kawashima-san recommended, right?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah. Letโ€™s do that.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI decided to put this thought aside for now.

โ€œIโ€™m so excited!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆBut then.

โ€œItโ€™s really delicious, so please look forward to it.โ€

โ€œHehe. Yeah!โ€

If I think about it any moreโ€ฆ I feel like Iโ€™ll get sucked into a deep hole and wonโ€™t be able to get out.
