The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming
After high school, we decided to take the train from the station nearest our school and ride it all the way to the station near my house.
โWow, the scenery around here brings back memories.โ
As the train approached the station near my house, Kanade gazed out the window at the view with a nostalgic look on her face.
Watching her profile, memories from the past came flooding back to me.
Iโm pretty sure it was back when I had just started elementary school.
Kanade and I were riding the train, just the two of us, on our way to a nearby shopping mall.
โLook, look! My house is over there, right?โ
Just like now, back then tooโฆ Kanade was happily gazing at the scenery outside the window.
โYou havenโt changed a bit since then.โ
Perhaps because I was lost in those memories, the words slipped out before I could stop them.
โI donโt know what era youโre talking about, but Iโve actually changed quite a bit, you know?โ
โReally?โ
โYeah. After all, Iโve nearly died once.โ
Kanade took her eyes off the window and gave me a shy smile.
Seeing her smile like that, my heart didnโt exactly feel all warm and fuzzy.
She nearly died.
When hit with such a powerful statement, thereโs no way I could feel warm and fuzzy.
โโฆAre you okay with your illness now?โ
โYeah. Sorry for worrying you.โ
โโฆI see.โ
Kanadeโs story about her illness ended just as abruptly as it began.
Having seen her in that state back then, this was a topic I didnโt want to wrap up in such a brief exchangeโฆ but prying into every detail would probably be tactless.
โThanks, A-kun.โ
Kanade offered her thanks.
โItโs because you worried about me so much that Iโm still alive today, you know?โ
โโฆโฆโ
โI mean, you knowโฆ that thing. โLove saves people,โ right?โ
โIf youโre going to say that, itโs โLove saves the Earth.โโ
I feel like that catchphrase was used by some charity program that embezzled donations.
โWait, was that it?โ
โAhaha,โ Kanade laughed again.
โWell, anyway, itโs a fact that I was saved by love, right?โ
โโฆโฆThatโs not right.โ
I looked down.
โBecause if love saves peopleโs livesโฆ then there shouldnโt be any lives leaving this world, right?โ
To put it another way, if love saves peopleโs lives, then everyone who has passed away must have been unloved by others.
โโฆโฆThat canโt be true. Right?โ
โโฆโฆAkkun?โ
โI can say this with certainty. Love cannot save people.โ
I looked up.
โโฆโฆLove isnโt something that saves people. Itโs just that love is essential for people to live.โ
โHuh?โ
โIf you donโt love someone, you wouldnโt even feel like paying their expensive medical bills, and to begin with, you wouldnโt feel like providing the food, clothing, and shelter necessary for them to survive. So, while love canโt save people, people canโt live without it.โ
โโฆโฆI see.โ
It seemed Kanade had finally accepted it.
โSo, does that mean Iโm still alive thanks to you, after all?โ
โฆโฆWas she really convinced?
โAkkun, do you know why I wanted to live?โ
โโฆโฆHuh?โ
โThe treatment was painful, I nearly died, and there were times I felt like giving up, thinking I was done for. Even so, do you know why I managed to pull myself together time and time again and decide to keep living?โ
โโฆโฆThereโs no way I could know that.โ
โI guess not. But itโs actually really simple.โ
โฆโฆAn announcement came over the intercom that the train would soon arrive at the station nearest my home.
โThe reason I was able to stay motivated to live was because I couldnโt forget the worried look on your face as you left that day.โ
The train began to slow down.
โIf I hadnโt wanted to see you again, Iโm sure I would have died long ago.โ
I couldnโt think of anything to say to Kanade, who was talking about her own life and death as if it were a joke.
โLook, the trainโs arriving.โ
Outside the window, the platform of our nearest station came into view.
We got off the train.
Itโs about a fifteen-minute walk from the station nearest my house to my home. We stopped at a convenience store along the way to buy some snacks, so we didnโt arrive home until about thirty minutes after we got off the train.
โExcuse me for coming in.โ
โSure.โ
โWhere are your parents?โ
โTheyโre both at work today. I think they said theyโd be coming home late.โ
โOh, really? Thatโs tough.โ
โYeah. It seems tough. Iโm truly grateful, though.โ
I really canโt hold a candle to my parents, who go to work even when they donโt want to, just to make ends meet.
โSince Iโm here, I kind of wanted to see them, too.โ
โWell, maybe next time.โ
โYeah. Iโll do that.โ
Kanade nodded.
โAlright. Then letโs go to A-kunโs room.โ
And, cutting off the flow of the conversation, she blurted that out.
โI donโt want to.โ
โNo way.โ
โEhโฆ?โ
Once she said โno,โ there was no way to refuse if she insisted.
โโฆI wonโt let you stay long, okay?โ
โYeah. Of course. I was only planning to say hi today anyway.โ
Kanade seemed to be having fun the whole time.
Reluctantly, I led Kanade to my room.
โWowโฆโ
As soon as she stepped inside, Kanade let out a gasp of admiration.
โYouโve kept it really clean.โ
โWellโฆโ
โYouโve redecorated, too.โ
โWell, itโs been years since you were last in this room, so Iโve redecorated a few times.โ
What on earth was that about?
โOh, right. Actually, I brought a gift to mark our reunion today.โ
Suddenly, as if sheโd just remembered, Kanade rummaged through her bag.
โHuh, really? I feel a little bad about that.โ
โItโs fine. Well, if youโd like, you can thank me somehow next time.โ
โOf course.โ
Kanadeโs face lit up, as if sheโd found what she was looking for in her bag.
โHere you go.โ
The gift Kanade handed me wasโฆ
โโฆA teddy bear?โ
Faced with such a rather fancy gift, I wasnโt sure how to react.
For a moment, I wondered if sheโd given the gift to the wrong personโฆ but seeing Kanade smiling so happily, I didnโt feel I could ask.
โThank youโฆโ
For the time being, I accepted the teddy bear.
โฆWell, maybe in France or somewhere, thereโs a culture of giving teddy bears as a token of reunion, so itโs probably best not to make a big deal out of it.
โThink of me when you look at it, and display it in your room.โ
โOh, yeahโฆโ
โI think that spot over there would be good.โ
Kanade pointed to the very top shelf of a five-tier bookshelf in the corner of the roomโone that was taller than I was.
โโฆArenโt teddy bears meant to be cherished? If you put it up there, wonโt it be hard to pick it up and admire it?โ
โCome on, itโs fine.โ
โโฆIt might get covered in dust, you know?โ
โCome on, itโs fine.โ
โฆSheโs not getting it.
โAlright. Iโll put it up.โ
โYeah.โ
Kanade nodded.
โOf course, make sure the teddy bearโs face is facing forward, okay?โ
โHuh, uhโฆ yeah.โ
Is that really something I need to specifically tell him?
โAlso, try not to move it around too much, okay?โ
โHuhโฆ?โ
โFrom now on, Iโll come by every so often to check if youโve moved it.โ
โฆโฆWhy?
โBecause Iโll know right away if you move it, you know?โ
So why?
Maiasa
“After graduating from high school…”?!
It’s actually metaphor about how the situation at school was so challenging, but okay I changed it
OK. It confused me. I thought there was major time skip there. LOL.
