Episode 4 – House hunting

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œHere we goโ€ฆโ€

It was quite a hassle to fulfill all of Kanadeโ€™s requests as I placed the teddy bear where she wanted itโ€”adjusting its angle a bit, moving it a little closer, and so on.

A famous novel flashed through my mind.

It was the kind of story where you walk into a restaurant to eat, only to be bombarded with a barrage of orders from the waitstaff.

โ€œGood work.โ€

โ€œOh, yeah.โ€

Kanade, who had already sat down on the bed to rest, offered me a word of thanks. It made me a little happy.

โ€œBy the way, you really keep your room clean, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t stare so much.โ€

Ignoring my words, Kanade stood up from the bed where sheโ€™d just sat down and started wandering around the room.

โ€œโ€ฆDo you have any dirty books or anything?โ€

โ€œNope.โ€

Even if I did, Iโ€™m not stupid enough to talk about it with the opposite sex.

What do you think would happen if I talked about something like that with a girl?

These days, people are super strict about sexual harassment.

Iโ€™d probably never be able to walk under the sun again.

โ€œYou donโ€™t? Oh, okay.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆShe doesnโ€™t really believe me, does she?

โ€œWhat kind of dirty books do you like, A-kun?โ€

Just as I thought.

โ€œChildhood friend stories? Or stories about the class beauty? Or maybe stories with a sickly heroine?โ€

โ€œThose are some pretty niche genres.โ€

โ€œIs that so? I donโ€™t think so.โ€

Kanade didnโ€™t seem to have any intention of stopping her search; she started rummaging through my desk.

โ€ฆJust as sheโ€™d been reluctant to hand over her phone, Iโ€™d actually hate having my room searched through so thoroughly. But I felt that if I stubbornly demanded she stop right now, things would only get worse. So, praying that Kanade wouldnโ€™t find anything strange, I reluctantly watched the situation unfold.

โ€œThis isโ€ฆโ€

My hopes were in vain; Kanade found several books on the desk.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun, have you already started studying for college entrance exams?โ€

What Kanade had found were several reference books.

Considering she was a first-year high school student, these were reference books for subjects she was still too early to tackle.

โ€œThey say itโ€™s important to invest in the future, after all.โ€

โ€œUgh.โ€

Kanade looked thoroughly fed up.

She had never liked studying.

Come to think of it, I remember that whenever I studied with Kanade, weโ€™d just end up chatting and never really made much progress.

โ€œโ€ฆCome to think of it, A-kun, youโ€™re attending a pretty prestigious high school now, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œWell, yeah.โ€

Thatโ€™s right. I currently attend one of the top academic high schools in Tokyo.

โ€ฆLooking back now, Iโ€™m surprised Kanade managed to transfer into the school I attend, considering how much she hated studying.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSeriously, even though it was to get into the same school, you put me through a lot.โ€

โ€œDid Kanade say something?โ€

โ€œNot really?โ€

Is it just my imagination, or did the tone of Kanadeโ€™s voice drop just a little?

โ€œIsnโ€™t there a book more interesting than these reference books I donโ€™t want to look at for a while?โ€

โ€œNo, there isnโ€™t.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆSeriously.

To begin with, she really should know that these days, erotic books are mainly read digitally, not on paper.

โ€ฆNo, actually, sheโ€™s better off never knowing.

โ€œWhat about over here?โ€

Kanade had been eagerly rummaging through peopleโ€™s desks, but she gave up and headed toward the bookshelves.

Then, she stared at the spines of the books, furrowing her brow.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

While she was doing that, Kanade found a few more books.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm?โ€

I was just thinking she should get tired of rummaging through the house by nowโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUgh.โ€

Seeing the book Kanade had found, I jumped to my feet without thinking.

โ€œThis.โ€

The book Kanade had found wasโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun?โ€

Of course, it wasnโ€™t a dirty book.

โ€œThisโ€ฆโ€

So what on earth was it?

โ€œWhy did you buy a French textbook?โ€

The textbook she found was a language book from France, where she had once gone for treatment.

โ€œโ€ฆI like studying languages.โ€

โ€œBut I donโ€™t see any other languages besides French?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIt just happened to be cheap.โ€

โ€œBut there arenโ€™t just oneโ€”there are about five of them?โ€

I shifted my gaze awkwardly.

โ€œAkkun?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI was planning to study abroad after graduating high school.โ€

However, with no excuse left, I resigned myself to it.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆTo France?โ€

โ€œTo France.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWellโ€ฆโ€

In Franceโ€ฆ

โ€œB-because France has so many tourist spots.โ€

I played dumb.

โ€œThe Eiffel Tower, the Arc de Triompheโ€ฆ there are so many famous sights.โ€

After saying it, I realized.

Come to think of it, that line wasโ€ฆ something Iโ€™d heard from the girl standing right in front of me.

โ€œโ€ฆI was planning to look for you.โ€

I continued, hanging my head.

โ€œAfter such a tragic parting, in the end, I couldnโ€™t do anythingโ€ฆ Even if I went to see you, it might be pointless. You might already have settled into a new life over there. I thought that, but I still hopedโ€ฆ I hoped I could see you one more time.โ€

โ€ฆEven I have to admit, thatโ€™s a pretty pathetic way of thinking.

Kanade must be cringing right now.

โ€œโ€ฆI never gave you my address over there, did I?โ€

โ€œI was going to track you down.โ€

Given Kanadeโ€™s illness, I figured it would be possible to find her through the doctors treating her.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThere was no guarantee I was even alive, was there? I never contacted you once while I was over there.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThatโ€™s true.โ€

Of course, even without her saying it, that possibility had crossed my mind.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆBut no matter what outcome awaited me, I felt I had to see it with my own eyes.โ€

That was my way of atoning for the fact that I couldnโ€™t do anything for her back then.

โ€œโ€ฆSo, to be honest, I didnโ€™t think youโ€™d show up again on your own.โ€

I gave a playful laugh.

โ€œโ€ฆI guess so.โ€

Kanade smiled back.

โ€œNow that weโ€™ve met again, we can stay together for the rest of our lives, until we die.โ€

..Is that so?

  1. Switchcomb says:

If this was a horror novel we would soon learn she only had a short time to live.

Fortunately, it’s a comedy slice of life, so that’s not quite so foreboding.
