Episode 69 – Forecast

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œHehe. Hehehehe.โ€

Kanade burst into a cheerful laugh.

It seemed that showing her I was serious had paid off.

โ€œWell then, what should I have you do? What should I have you do?โ€

Sitting on the train seat, Kanade was flapping her feet back and forth.

With each movement, the skirt of her dress fluttered in the breeze.

I felt a little uncomfortable looking at her.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKa, Kanade. Iโ€™ll do anything, but letโ€™s save that for later.โ€

โ€œEhh? I want you to do anything for me right now, right here, Akkun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWeโ€™re almost at the station closest to where Iโ€™m meeting Takagaki-san.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆAyaka-chan. Youโ€™re going to get in my way again, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s eyes lost their sparkle as she muttered something in a voice too soft for me to hear.

โ€œHehe. Well, letโ€™s go then, Akkun.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAyaka-chan is waiting, after all. Since Ayaka-chan is waiting, thereโ€™s nothing we can do about it, right? โ€ฆHehe.โ€

Kanade gave a faint smile, stood up from her seat, and got off the train as it arrived at the station shortly thereafter.

The area around the station, located near a quiet residential neighborhood, was lined with apartment buildings and convenience stores, but there were no major commercial facilities, giving it an atmosphere that didnโ€™t exactly scream โ€œa station with plenty to see.โ€

โ€œAyaka-chan apparently loves trying out different foods.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€œAnd I hear there are a lot of stylish, independently owned restaurants around here.โ€

I see. That would be the perfect spot for someone whose hobby is trying out different foods.

Still, Takagaki-san has quite a few hobbiesโ€”cosplay, trying out different foods, and so on. And since sheโ€™s also working hard at her studies, she probably doesnโ€™t even have time to sleep.

โ€œAkkun. Youโ€™re thinking about Ayaka-chan right now, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œHuh? Yeah.โ€

โ€œHehe. I see. So youโ€™re thinking about Ayaka-chan instead of me.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh? Yeah.โ€

I nodded.

โ€œIโ€™m always thinking about Kanade, too.โ€

I scratched my head with a wry smile.

โ€ฆKanade.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe.โ€

She gave a faint smile.

โ€œHehehehe. Akkun, you really do like me way too much.โ€

She seemed to have cheered up somehow.

With cicadas chirping in the distance, we walked along the street in the residential neighborhood. There werenโ€™t many buildings around here, and with nothing to block the sunlight, there wasnโ€™t a single patch of shade.

Because of that, sweat was pouring off us like a waterfall, and it was miserable.

โ€œKanade, isnโ€™t your jacket too hot?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m already struggling in just a T-shirtโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehehe.โ€

Kanade smiled.

โ€œIโ€™m fine. Itโ€™s just the right temperature.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆFor someone who says that, your forehead is covered in sweat.โ€

โ€œHyan!โ€

I pulled a handkerchief out of my pocket and wiped the sweat from Kanadeโ€™s forehead.

As I did, a strange sound escaped Kanadeโ€™s lips.

โ€ฆIโ€™ll have to stop wiping her forehead out of the blue from now on.

โ€œDonโ€™t push yourself too hard.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKanade?โ€

โ€œHehe. Since Akkunโ€™s wiping my sweat for me, itโ€™s no problem, right?โ€

Is that so?

โ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ

Well, I guess so.

โ€œOh, this looks like the place.โ€

Kanade checked the map app on her phone and stopped in front of a small shop right in front of us.

From the way she spoke, it seemed this was the meeting place with Ms. Takagaki.

โ€œThen letโ€™s just go inside.โ€

โ€œYeah. I hope the AC is working.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI guess it really is hot after all.

โ€œWelcome!โ€

As we opened the door, a cool breeze from the AC and the clerkโ€™s voice greeted us.

โ€œTwo people, right?โ€

โ€œOh, weโ€™re meeting someone here.โ€

So said that and looked around the shop, eyes darting here and there.

โ€œOh, Ayaka-chan!โ€

Then, spotting Takagaki-san inside, she waved happily and started walking toward her.

I followed Kanade.

โ€œHello.โ€

โ€œHello. Youโ€™re late.โ€

โ€œHehe. Sorry about that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, whatever.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆUgh.

โ€ฆโ€ฆI was totally sure todayโ€™s meal was just going to be the three of usโ€”Kanade, me, and Takagaki-sanโ€”but it seems I was wrong.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHello, Kadokura-san.โ€

โ€œYeah. Hello, Kanade-chan.โ€

Kadokura-san had a gentle smile on her face.
