Episode 47 – Late

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

On the train heading to the airport, when Kanade, sitting next to me, started fiddling with her phone, I decided to let my mind wander.

I wonder what Takagaki-sanโ€™s younger brother is like?

That was the gist of my thoughts.

The other day, Takagaki-san showed me a photo of her brotherโ€ฆ He had a handsome face, but he looked youngโ€”maybe just starting elementary school. Thatโ€™s the age range he seemed to be in.

If thatโ€™s the caseโ€ฆ the age gap between him and Takagaki-san is at least five years, at a conservative estimate. At a generous estimate, maybe ten years?

โ€ฆTheyโ€™re quite a pair of siblings with a big age gap.

Well, maybe she just showed me a photo taken a few years ago, or even if not, the age gap might be smaller than I thoughtโ€ฆ but I found myself getting a little curious.

Since becoming friends with Takagaki, this was probably the first time Iโ€™d felt this much interest in anything related to her.

โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to it.โ€

I muttered.

I couldnโ€™t wait for the moment when Iโ€™d finally get to meet Takagakiโ€™s younger brother.

โ€œWhat are you looking forward to?โ€

It seemed my mutterings had reached Kanade, who was sitting next to me.

Kanade asked in a tone lower than usual.

โ€œโ€ฆAh, meeting Takagakiโ€™s younger brother.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehe. Yeah, youโ€™re right. Itโ€™ll be fun.โ€

โ€œHaha. Youโ€™re right.โ€

We laughed together.

โ€œItโ€™s surprising that Takagaki-san has such a little brother, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYeah, it is. I wonder if heโ€™s in elementary school? He looked even younger than that.โ€

โ€œOh, did you think so too, Kanade? Yeah, he looked about that age.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI smiled.

โ€œI canโ€™t wait to meet him.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

Kanade tilted her head.

โ€œIs Ayakaโ€™s little brother coming today?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

This time, I tilted my head.

โ€œHeโ€™s not coming?โ€

โ€œEh, I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆNow that you mention it, she never actually said she was bringing her little brother.โ€

Seeing Kanadeโ€™s reaction, it dawned on me.

โ€œโ€ฆBut I think heโ€™ll come, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œDo you think so?โ€

โ€œYeah. I think so.โ€

A few minutes later, the train we were riding arrived at the airport.

The airport station where we got off was the terminal station leading to the international flights.

When I stood up from my seat to get off the train, there were already many passengers gathered in front of the doors.

Most of them were carrying suitcases by their sides.

โ€ฆIt was a familiar sight I saw every time I came to the airport station.

Soon the train doors opened, and we got off along with the people who were about to set off on their journeys.

We walked through the airport underground passage, took the escalator, and headed for the departure level.

โ€œThe meeting place was the departure gate, right?โ€

It was Kanade who suggested it.

โ€œAs usual, weโ€™re being made to walk quite a distance.โ€

โ€œYeah. But the airport is clean and spacious, so itโ€™s worth the walk.โ€

โ€œHehe. A-kun, youโ€™re being unusually positive today.โ€

The way she put it made it sound like Iโ€™m always negativeโ€ฆ

โ€ฆIs that actually true?

โ€œAnyway, Kanade, why did you specifically choose the area in front of the departure gates as our meeting spot?โ€

I decided to ask Kanade the question that had been on my mind ever since we decided on this meeting spot.

โ€œHuh? Well, I just thought it might be easy to find.โ€

It was a simpler reason than Iโ€™d expected.

โ€ฆWell, having explored the airport for years, I know there are a few other places that would be just as suitable for a meeting spot.

But for someone who doesnโ€™t come to the airport very oftenโ€ฆ I guess, in a way, this really is an easy place to meetโ€ฆ?

โ€œCome to think of it, I got a message on the train a little while ago.โ€

Kanade brought it up out of the blue.

โ€œAyaka-chan said sheโ€™ll be a little late.โ€

โ€œHuh, really?โ€

โ€ฆI hadnโ€™t received any such message at all.

Even though Iโ€™ve known her way longer than Kanade hasโ€ฆ Thatโ€™s a little sad.

โ€œYeah. She said her previous appointment is running a bit late.โ€

โ€œPrevious appointment?โ€

I wonder what kind of appointment that is.

โ€œโ€ฆSo, anywayโ€ฆโ€

Kanade smiled.

โ€œAkkun. Looks like weโ€™ve got some free time on our hands for a while.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHehe. Akkun. Do you remember what kind of place this is?โ€

This is the departure gate.

In other wordsโ€ฆ the place where Kanade and I parted ways once.

[I’m back, Akkun.]

And it’s also the place where we truly reunited.

โ€œThat thing we did the other day. It was so moving.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAhaha.โ€

I gave a wry smile.

Back then, I let my emotions get the best of me and told her all sorts of thingsโ€ฆ but looking back now, itโ€™s a little embarrassing.

โ€œIt was so moving. So moving.โ€

โ€ฆKanade, what on earth is she planning to do?

โ€œSo, A-kun. About that thing from the other dayโ€ฆ do you want to do it again?โ€

โ€œEhโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see. So your feelings for me have cooled off, huh?โ€

โ€œWhoaโ€”! No, no, thatโ€™s not it!โ€

Seeing Kanade hang her head, I panicked.

โ€œO-okay. Letโ€™s do it.โ€

โ€œReally!? Iโ€™m so happy. Iโ€™m so happy.โ€

โ€ฆWell, seeing Kanade this happy, a little embarrassment is nothing, right?

โ€œโ€ฆAlright then, Akkun. Stay still, okay?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œStay completely still, okay?โ€

โ€œHuhโ€ฆ?โ€

Kanade suddenly moved closer to me.

Her lustrous black hair swayed gently, and her scent drifted right up to me, making me feel a little strange.

Isnโ€™t this just a repeat of what we did last time?

But with my face burning, I couldnโ€™t bring myself to say that out loud.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆ!โ€

Without thinking, I closed my eyes.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThere.โ€

Butโ€ฆ things didnโ€™t go quite as Iโ€™d expected.

When I slowly opened my eyes, Kanade was attaching something black to my neck.

โ€œKanade, whatโ€™s this?โ€

โ€œHmm?โ€

Once sheโ€™d finished attaching the black thing, Kanade stepped away from me.

โ€œA pin mic.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI see.โ€

I see.

So this is a pin mic.

โ€ฆItโ€™s the first time Iโ€™ve seen one in person.

Wait, did I use one back in middle school for student council work? I canโ€™t quite remember.

โ€œOkay. Alright, Akkun. Letโ€™s get started right away.โ€

โ€œHuh? Oh, yeah.โ€

Kanade smiled.

โ€œIโ€™m home, Akkun.โ€

โ€ฆAfter feeling briefly elated by Kanadeโ€™s beaming smile, I snapped back to reality and continued.

โ€œWelcome home, Kanade.โ€

โ€ฆKanade.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHmm.โ€

She looked puzzled and tilted her head.

โ€œAkkun. Can you do it with a little more of a sigh?โ€

โ€œMore of a sigh?โ€

I took a deep breath in and out.

โ€œThatโ€™s it. Letโ€™s try it one more time like that.โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€

I noddedโ€ฆ

โ€œWelcome home, Kanade.โ€

I said it again.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Kanadeโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

She was making that puzzled face again.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

This time, she even crossed her arms.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehehe.โ€

Ah, sheโ€™s got a slouchy look on her face now.

โ€œOkay?โ€

โ€œOkay. Just like you, A-kun. Itโ€™s perfect. Perfect casting. Perfect location. Perfect acting.โ€

Sheโ€™s really lavishing praise on me.

โ€œAh, what should I do? If A-kunโ€™s voice hadnโ€™t changed, I wouldโ€™ve wanted you to tell me to try my best one more time.โ€

Thatโ€™s rightโ€ฆ that was the line I said to her on the day I saw Kanade off.

โ€œโ€ฆNah, maybe there are some things you can only see after your voice breaks?โ€

โ€ฆ

โ€ฆ

Kanade seems to be having a lot of fun, doesn’t she?

โ€œWhat are you guys doing?โ€

Takagaki-san, who had shown up late, suddenly appeared right in front of us, looking utterly horrified.

Why on earth?

โ€œOh, Ayaka-chan. You couldโ€™ve taken it a little slowerโ€”โ€

โ€œRight. โ€ฆIโ€™m actually regretting that right now.โ€

Thatโ€™s a pretty harsh thing to say.

โ€œโ€ฆSigh. Well, letโ€™s get going then.โ€

โ€œYeah. Youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œWait, you two!โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

Takagaki-san didnโ€™t bring her little brother after all?.
