Episode 27 – Bed

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

It took a few dozen minutes by train from the station nearest our school.

We arrived at the station closest to our homes and walked the rest of the way.

โ€œIโ€™ve totally memorized the streets around here now.โ€

โ€œOh, really?โ€

โ€œYeah. Well, I used to come around here a lot back in the day, too.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€

โ€œThere used to be a convenience store around here back thenโ€ฆ but itโ€™s gone now, so itโ€™s a little less convenient, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYeah, thatโ€™s right.โ€

After walking for about ten minutes while chatting, we arrived at my house.

โ€œExcuse me for coming in.โ€

Kanade said politely.

โ€œTodayโ€ฆ no, Mom and Dad are working late again today, so donโ€™t worry.โ€

โ€œHehe. That doesnโ€™t really put my mind at ease.โ€

Kanade really is such a kind girl.

โ€œIโ€™ll go make some tea, so could you wait in the room for a bit?โ€

โ€œSure. Thanks.โ€

At Kanadeโ€™s suggestion, I headed to my room.

โ€ฆHuh? How did it end up being Kanade whoโ€™s making the tea?

This is my house, right?

Anyway, once I got to my room, I decided to put the teddy bear back where it belonged.

โ€œSorry to keep you waiting.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆOh.โ€

But, as if on cue, Kanade walked into the room.

โ€œSo you did move it after all.โ€

Kanade looked a little annoyed as she set a glass of barley tea on the table.

โ€œBut it was covered in dust.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t need to worry about that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆBut youโ€™re the one who said it, right?โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œYou told me to think of this teddy bear as you.โ€

โ€ฆBasically, I couldnโ€™t let a stand-in for you get covered in dust.

I was too embarrassed to say any more, but that was the reason Iโ€™d moved the teddy bear.

โ€œโ€ฆMuu.โ€

Kanade puffed out her cheeks.

Apparently, she wasnโ€™t convinced by my explanation.

โ€œWell, thenโ€ฆ I guess itโ€™s okay to leave it there.โ€

But in the end, she let me not put the teddy bear on the top shelf of the bookshelf.

What a forgiving girl Kanade is.

โ€ฆForgiving, huh?

โ€œEi!โ€

Kanade suddenly dove face-first onto the bed I use when I sleep.

โ€œYou idiot, A-kun.โ€

Kanade lay face-down, flapping her legs.

โ€ฆUm, well.

Every time Kanade flapped her legs, her skirt flutteredโ€ฆ It was quite a sight for sore eyesโ€”or rather, I didnโ€™t know where to look.

When I glanced over, her healthy thighs were exposed.

Still, what exactly makes me an idiot?

For once, I couldnโ€™t agree with a single word she said.

Kanade still didnโ€™t seem to be in a better mood; she hugged my pillow and buried her face in it.

She rolled over on the bed, curled up on her side, and fell silent.

โ€ฆโ€ฆSeriously, I didnโ€™t know where to look.

โ€œKanade, what exactly did you come here to do?โ€

I asked.

Or rather, it was a gentle rebuke.

She had come here today to study.

At this rate, forget studyingโ€”sheโ€™d probably end up sleeping there until dinnertime.

โ€œโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆJust supposeโ€ฆโ€

Kanadeโ€™s voice was muffled as she spoke, her face buried in the pillow.

โ€œWhat ifโ€ฆ I told you I came here today to do something other than study, what would you do?โ€

Hearing Kanadeโ€™s muffled words, I thought.

โ€ฆIf she had come here today to do something other than study.

What on earth had Kanade actually come here to do?

Given Kanadeโ€™s current state, the first thing that comes to mind isโ€ฆ that she came to sleep?

But if that were the case, she could just sleep at her own house instead of mine.

Thenโ€ฆ judging by her provocative words and actionsโ€ฆ

โ€ฆIf that were the case.

If Kanade had come here today with that intentionโ€ฆ

โ€œAkkunโ€ฆ? What are you going to doโ€ฆ?โ€

Iโ€ฆ

โ€œIโ€™m going to get angry.โ€

โ€ฆFurrowing my brow, I said.

A brief silence.

โ€œโ€ฆHuh!?โ€

Kanade pulled her face away from the pillow, looking flustered.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ you came here today not to study, but to distract me, right?โ€

Given Kanadeโ€™s current state, I couldnโ€™t think of any other explanation.

โ€œNo, even if you didnโ€™t come here to distract meโ€ฆ you came to study, right? To get good grades on the test. To deepen your understanding. For your own futureโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆAaah.โ€

โ€œThen letโ€™s do this properly.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYes.โ€

Kanade, looking more fragile than usual, got out of bed and headed for the table.

I felt a little sorry, wondering if Iโ€™d gone a bit too farโ€ฆ but whether I thought about it calmly or not, I felt like Kanade was about 60% to blame for this whole thingโ€ฆ Well, Iโ€™ll make sure to apologize properly later.

โ€œA-kunโ€ฆโ€

A few dozen minutes after we started studying, Kanade, on the verge of tears, called out to me.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t get this problemโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOh, that oneโ€ฆโ€

From then on, we concentrated on our studies until my parents came home.
