Episode 10 – Friendship

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Leaving aside what happened in the library, why was Kanade eating dinner at my house?

That obvious question crossed my mind, but I didnโ€™t ask her about it directly.

Come to think of it, when I was a kid, if one of my parents was busy and away from home, Iโ€™d often eat dinner at the other parentโ€™s house.

In other words, Kanadeโ€™s parents must have been busy tonight.

โ€œIs the food good?โ€

So, after mulling it over, the question I asked Kanade turned out to be a very simple one.

โ€œYup!โ€

โ€œOh, that makes me so happy!โ€

Seeing Kanade nod energetically, my mother looked absolutely delighted.

Watching the two of them looking so happy made me feel happy too.

โ€œOh my, I was so surprised today. Just when I thought Iโ€™d made it home early for the first time in ages, the doorbell rang out of the blue! When I went to answer it, there was Kanade!โ€

My mom, looking incredibly pleased, told me how Kanade had ended up at our house.

โ€œApparently, she went out of her way to come return something she borrowed from you.โ€

โ€œHmm?โ€

Huhโ€ฆ?

Did I lend Kanade something?

โ€ฆWas it from when we were kids?

“Really. Being gentlemanly with a girl leaves a good impression. Especially when it comes to Kanade-chan! It’s not a bad thing, Atsushi.”

Mom was angry.

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you tell me Kanade was back in the country!โ€

โ€ฆIt was a perfectly justified anger.

โ€œHaha. Auntie, I got held up with all sorts of paperwork. I only reunited with A-kun yesterday.โ€

โ€œOh?โ€

โ€œSo please donโ€™t be too hard on A-kun. โ€ฆBesides, considering how much he helped me back then, I think I should have come to say hello in person, rather than sending A-kun.โ€

โ€œHey, Atsu! Kanade-chan has turned into such a proper young lady without you even noticing! A proper young lady!โ€

โ€ฆYouโ€™re a far cry from a lady, Mom.

โ€œBut Auntie, your food really is delicious.โ€

โ€œHehe, that makes me happy.โ€

โ€œA kun. So, donโ€™t just focus on studyingโ€”make sure you eat your meals properly, okay?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œYou skipped dinner yesterday, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh, did I even tell Kanade that I skipped dinner yesterday?

Well, I guess I mentioned it casually this morning when we were walking to school togetherโ€ฆโ€ฆor did I?

โ€œAtsushi. Did you skip dinner again?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSorry.โ€

At some point, Mom started becoming really concerned about her childrenโ€™s health.

Thatโ€™s why, whenever I skip a meal, she nags me relentlessly.

Since her lectures tend to go on forever, itโ€™s better for my mental health to just apologize quickly.

But this time, with a silent plea for her not to say anything extra, I glared at Kanade.

โ€œโ€ฆD-donโ€™t stare at me like that. Itโ€™s embarrassing.โ€

However, Kanade seemed completely unfazed by my glare.

After that, we gathered around the dining table and chatted for about an hour in the living room.

โ€œโ€ฆWell, Iโ€™m going to go study now.โ€

Thinking it was about time to study, I slowly stood up.

โ€œWait a minute, Atsushi. Kanadeโ€™s still here. You can study later.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine, Auntie. Donโ€™t worry about it.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆโ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to study in A-kunโ€™s room too.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHuh?

โ€œIโ€™m going to study in A-kunโ€™s room too.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆApparently, I hadnโ€™t misheard her.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œA-kun, teaching others how to study seems to help you learn too.โ€

โ€œWell, I guess thatโ€™s fine then.โ€

โ€œEasy peasy.โ€

Momโ€™s being a pain.

โ€œSo, shall we go to your room?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

We headed to my room.

โ€œโ€ฆCome to think of it, was everything okay with Kadokura-san?โ€

The moment we entered the room, it suddenly occurred to me.

Come to think of it, Kanade was supposed to have been hanging out with Kadokura-san after school today.

โ€œwas everything okay?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, umโ€ฆโ€

With an awkward atmosphere hanging in the air, I scratched my cheek.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI think I went too far today.โ€

โ€œYou went too far?โ€

โ€œI was just hoping there wasnโ€™t any tension between you two, who are right in the middle of it allโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Kanade fell silent.

After staring blankly for a moment,

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe.โ€

Kanade smiled.

โ€œA kun. You should be worrying about yourself, you know?โ€

โ€œWorrying about myself?โ€

โ€œLike, whether youโ€™ll get bullied for standing up to the feisty Kadokura-san.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAh, right.โ€

I saw her point.

โ€œItโ€™s not like itโ€™s unusual for me to be an outsider in class.โ€

To be honest, I didnโ€™t really mind if I ended up in the same position as before.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYouโ€™re something else, arenโ€™t you?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s muttered voice was so soft I couldnโ€™t make out what she was saying.

โ€œWell, if itโ€™s about Kadokura-san, Iโ€™m sure youโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see.โ€

It wasnโ€™t really any of my business what happened, butโ€ฆ the fact that she went out of her way to say something like this meant Kanade had gone out of her way for me, I suppose.

โ€œThanks, Kanade.โ€

So, just to be polite, I offered my thanks.

โ€œNah, itโ€™s fine. Itโ€™s you, A-kun, after all.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI see.โ€

โ€œAnyway, A-kunโ€ฆโ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆWas it just my imagination?

I felt like the tone of Kanadeโ€™s voice had dropped slightly.

โ€œI still donโ€™t know much about my classmates, so I was hoping you could tell me a bit about them?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆIf she wants to know about her classmates, it would probably be faster to ask someone else besides me.

โ€œWhat?โ€

Well, Iโ€™ll answer to the best of my knowledge.

โ€œWhat kind of person is Takagaki Ayaka san?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆI couldnโ€™t answer Kanadeโ€™s question.

She knew Iโ€™d been in the library, and then suddenly asked me right there and then about the person Iโ€™d been with in the library todayโ€ฆ

โ€ฆโ€ฆAm I overthinking this?

Our study session with Kanade ended after about an hour.

After seeing Kanade off at the station and returning home, for some reason I couldnโ€™t fall asleep.

โ€ฆโ€ฆI think Iโ€™m just overthinking it, but I feel like Iโ€™m being watched.

โ€œA-kun, good morning.โ€

The next morning, I ran into Kanade at the station.

โ€œWhat a coincidence.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

We boarded the train and headed to school.

After a few dozen minutes of swaying on the train, we walked along the path to school and entered the classroom.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAh!โ€

The moment I opened the classroom door, I heard the sound of footsteps pattering toward me from inside.

โ€œKanade-chan! Good morning!โ€

The one who threw her arms around Kanade, who was standing next to me, wasโ€ฆ

โ€œAhaha. Good morning. โ€ฆKadokura-san.โ€

It was Kadokura-san, who had been on the verge of a confrontation with Kanade yesterday.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehe, yesterday was fun, wasnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYeah. It sure was.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWill you play with me again?โ€

โ€œOf course, Kadokura-san.โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆHow on earth did Kanade manage to get this far in just a few hours after school?

โ€œKadokura-san, what about saying hello to A-kun?โ€

I felt a chill run down my spine.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆG-good morning, Hagiwara-kun.โ€

Seeing Kadokura-san greet me with an embarrassed lookโ€”a complete turnaround from yesterdayโ€”I took a step back.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKadokura-san.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s voice was cold.

โ€œAkkun, youโ€™re scared, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry. Iโ€™m so sorry, Hagiwara-kunโ€ฆโ€ฆ!โ€

The sight of Kadokura-san desperately apologizing to me was completely different from the girl Iโ€™d known until yesterday.

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s okay. Iโ€™m not scared. Donโ€™t worry about it.โ€

โ€œReally? Thatโ€™s a reliefโ€ฆโ€

To Kadokura-san, who seemed relievedโ€ฆ

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m really glad, Kadokura-san.โ€

Kanadeโ€™s faint smile remained etched in my mind for quite some time.
