Episode 12 – Poor friend

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œAkkun. Iโ€™ve been looking for you.โ€

Smiling as usual, Kanade said.

Judging by the way she spoke, it seemed sheโ€™d finished dinner with Kadokura and the others and had been looking for me.

Why on earth?

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ve been looking for you.โ€

Apparently, there was no particular reason.

โ€œMore importantly, what are the two of you doing here?โ€

โ€œOh, studying.โ€

Come to think of it, Kanade somehow knew yesterday that I was studying in the library.

Since she knows this is where I usually study, and considering the reference books spread out on the desk, she should have been able to tell we were studying without even asking usโ€”so why did she go out of her way to ask what we were doingโ€ฆ?

โ€œI see. Studying, huh. Hmm. Hmm. I see.โ€

It seemed Kanade understood that we were studying.

โ€œโ€ฆUm, Takagaki-san? Is that right?โ€

Kanade addressed Takagaki-san without breaking her smile, as if to put him at ease.

โ€œโ€ฆN-no, thatโ€™s not me.โ€

โ€œHuh? Itโ€™s not?โ€

โ€œWhy are you lyingโ€ฆ?โ€

To my bewildermentโ€ฆ

โ€œT-this guy isโ€ฆโ€

Takagaki-san, on the verge of tears, lunged at me.

โ€œHmm?โ€

Kanade tilted her head slightly, smiling.

Takagaki-san noticed the third party present and showed the discretion to stop their usual banter.

โ€ฆโ€ฆThatโ€™s Takagaki for you. Unlike a certain Kadokura, sheโ€™s a sensible person.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUgh. Why does this have to happen to me?โ€

Takagaki muttered.

โ€œTakagaki san. Iโ€™ve actually been wanting to talk to you for a while.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t really feel the same wayโ€ฆโ€

โ€œEh? Thatโ€™s mean.โ€

Kanade pulled out a chair, deliberately moving it to a spot right between us, and sat down.

โ€œHey. Since weโ€™re here, and to get to know each other better, why donโ€™t we talk for the rest of the break?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUmโ€ฆโ€

Takagaki-san was clearly at a loss.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo, Kanade.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhy?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s tone seemed lower than usual.

โ€œTakagaki-san is studying right now. Letโ€™s let her concentrate on her work.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHmm. Youโ€™re really kind, A-kun. To Takagaki-san, anyway.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSorry.โ€

I looked down.

โ€œItโ€™s true that Iโ€ฆ havenโ€™t been kind to Kanade. After all, I couldnโ€™t save you back then.โ€

I felt a little queasy.

A heavy atmosphere enveloped the library.

โ€œC-come on. Akkun, Iโ€™m just kidding. Itโ€™s a joke, okay?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s voice was cheerful.

โ€œSeriously, Akkun. Iโ€™ve told you so many times. You really did save me, you know? I mean, the fact that Iโ€™m alive right now, and that Iโ€™m here as I amโ€ฆ itโ€™s all thanks to you.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKanade?โ€

โ€œAkkun. Just as I have you, you have me, right?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆKanadeโ€™s words sounded incredibly sweet.

For a moment, I was tempted to go along with her sweet words and accept everything.

I shook my head.

โ€œSorry, Takagaki-san. For interrupting your studying.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYeah. You really are a distraction.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSorry.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œS-sorry. Just kidding.โ€

Takagaki-san looked like she was about to cry again.

โ€œKanade, I donโ€™t want to bother her any more, so letโ€™s go.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOkay. If you say so, A-kun.โ€

โ€œTake your timeโ€

Takagaki-san waved weakly at us.

We walked down the hallway, which was noisy with other students.

We werenโ€™t walking side by side.

Kanade was walking right behind me, staying close.

โ€œAkkun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œAkkun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAh, sorry.โ€

โ€œAre you feeling sick?โ€

Her voice was gentle.

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œWant to go to the nurseโ€™s office?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou know, I hate seeing you look like youโ€™re in pain, Akkun. So please donโ€™t push yourself.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not pushing myselfโ€ฆโ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun.โ€

I turned around to face Kanade behind me.

โ€œDo you enjoy schoolโ€ฆ?โ€

Kanadeโ€™s eyes, unlike just a moment ago, were flickering with a hint of sorrow.

โ€ฆI didnโ€™t sense even a trace of the unease Iโ€™d been feeling toward her lately.

Her eyes looked like she was genuinely worried about me.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆSchool isnโ€™t a place to have fun; itโ€™s a place to study hard.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAkkun. Iโ€™m just wondering, butโ€ฆโ€

For a moment, Kanadeโ€™s face twisted into an expression of deep sorrow.

โ€œIs it my fault that you look so miserableโ€ฆ?โ€

And then, in a voice that sounded as if it might vanish at any moment, she asked me.

It had been three days since weโ€™d been reunited.

The Kanade I saw todayโ€ฆ was no longer the girl whoโ€™d once suffered from illness and felt weak; she had grown into a lady exuding a unique aura.

She never showed any signs of weakness, always smiling, and the poise she had acquired after narrowly escaping deathโ€ฆ made her seem almost like a major figure.

This was the first sign of vulnerability she had shown since our reunion.

[From someone whoโ€™s nearly died, being bullied by a mere high school student is nothing.]

That was the first sign of vulnerability Kanade had shown since saying something like that.

โ€ฆI never imagined it would have anything to do with me.

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œI knew itโ€ฆ I knew it was like this.โ€

Kanade looked like she was about to cry.

โ€œNo. Thatโ€™s not it.โ€

At my words, Kanade looked up.

Her face saidโ€ฆ โ€œThereโ€™s no way thatโ€™s not it.โ€

It was a little scary.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆKanade, do you have time after school today?โ€

I asked.

โ€œThereโ€™s a place I want to go.โ€

Wanting to put her at ease, I plastered a clumsy smile on my face.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆThereโ€™s a place I want to go, just the two of us.โ€
