Episode 49 – The Cheerful Yandere

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

Although I was struck by the baffling phenomenon of Kanade glaring at me, we proceeded to make our way through the airport terminal in our usual, relaxed manner.

โ€œOh, so weโ€™re taking a shuttle bus?โ€

โ€œYeah. If it were the terminal over there, we could have walked, but this terminal, where the international flights are, isnโ€™t connected to it.โ€

We boarded the shuttle bus that had just arrived.

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s r-really crowded.โ€

โ€œMust be because of all the inbound tourists.โ€

Inside the shuttle bus, English, French, and other languages were flying around alongside Japanese.

As you can tell from the sheer number of languages being spokenโ€ฆ I was doing my best just to hold onto the overhead strap, and it wasnโ€™t even easy to shift my feet.

โ€œWhoa!โ€

The shuttle bus started moving suddenly, causing Takagaki-san to lose her balance and bump into me.

A soft sensation made contact with my chest.

โ€œS-sorryโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s okay.โ€

With it being this crowded, something like this was bound to happen.

Personally, I didnโ€™t even think much of itโ€ฆ but unusually for Takagaki-san, who usually has such a feisty personality, she gave me a shy glance.

โ€œโ€ฆFufu.โ€

After Takagaki-san moved away, Kanade bumped into me.

โ€œSorry, A-kun.โ€

A smooth apology.

โ€œItโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆAkkunโ€™s body is surprisingly manly, isnโ€™t it?โ€

A seamless touch.

โ€œโ€ฆKanade, youโ€™re not supposed to touch peopleโ€™s bodies without permission in public.โ€

โ€œWhy not?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s harassment.โ€

โ€œHehe. So, that means itโ€™s okay if weโ€™re not in public, right?โ€

A seamless nitpicking.

โ€ฆโ€ฆWell, well, Kanade sure is full of energy.

As someone who knew her when she was so frail, I find her current state quite heartwarming.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou two have forgotten Iโ€™m here, havenโ€™t you?โ€

Takagaki-san narrowed her eyes at us.

โ€œWhat are you talking about, Ayaka-chan? Of course we havenโ€™t forgotten.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆFor someone who hasnโ€™t forgotten, you two are way too absorbed in your own little world.โ€

โ€œHehe. Let me ask you this: just because Ayaka-chan is here, does that mean weโ€™re not allowed to be absorbed in our own little world?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆItโ€™s fine.โ€

Ah, the timid Takagaki has appeared again.

โ€ฆโ€ฆStill, Kanade, when on earth are you going to leave me alone?

Well, whatever.

Putting all those questions aside for now, I decided to just gaze blankly at the scenery visible through the shuttle bus window.

Just as youโ€™d expect from a shuttle bus running through an airport.

Just by looking out the window, I could see planes taking off and landing, moving with a roar.

โ€ฆEach and every one of those planes is about to visit various cities in various countries.

To think that those lumps of metalโ€”which seem so tiny when you consider the scale of the Earthโ€”could be on the other side of the globe in just over ten hoursโ€ฆ I really canโ€™t help but marvel at the height of human technological achievement.

โ€œBy the way, Ichinose-sanโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhat is it, Ayaka-chan?โ€

โ€œYouโ€ฆ how long are you going to keep sticking to Hagiwara-kun?โ€

Ah, Takagaki-san asked the very question Iโ€™d been wondering about but hadnโ€™t been able to voice aloud.

โ€œHehehe.โ€

Kanade smiled.

โ€œOn the contrary, is it really so bad if I stay glued to him?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean, โ€˜on the contraryโ€™?โ€

โ€œHehehehe.โ€

โ€ฆAh, I see.

โ€œKanade, if the train is so packed you canโ€™t move, you donโ€™t have to force yourself to move away, okay?โ€

In other words, Kanade was trying to say that the train was so crowdedโ€ฆ she couldnโ€™t even move an inch.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI think she could probably move a little, but if that satisfies her, then I wonโ€™t say anything else.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHehehe.โ€

โ€œSo, just by laughing, youโ€™ve managed to solve the problem, havenโ€™t you, Ichinose-sanโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

Takagaki-san let out a sigh.

โ€œYou two really are close, arenโ€™t you?โ€

And, still looking exasperated, she said that.

โ€œOf course we are. After all, weโ€™ve nearly lost each other to death, all while recognizing each other as precious to us!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not something to say with a beaming smile.โ€

After teasing the cheerful Kanadeโ€ฆ

โ€œNearly lost each other to death, huhโ€ฆโ€

She muttered that, her gaze distant.

โ€œโ€ฆTakagaki-san?โ€

When I called out to her, she looked startled.

โ€œSorry. Itโ€™s nothing. Forget it.โ€

Then, pulling herself together, she rattled off those words.

What on earth was wrong with Takagaki-sanโ€ฆ?

I was driven by a few questions, but since the shuttle bus arrived at the domestic terminal shortly after, I decided to shift my focus to the wrapped airplane for the time being.
