Episode 38 – This kind of youth isn’t so bad

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

With the โ€œName-Calling Eventโ€ taking place, my high school life has taken another step into irreversible territory.

During class, I feel a gaze from my seat on the right.

Rino Hoshimiyaโ€”no, Rinoโ€”is looking at me.

She pretends to be taking notes while glancing at me every now and then. When I notice and look her way, she smiles happily, her cheeks still flushed.

Stop it.

Weโ€™re in class.

This is a classroom, not the setting for a romantic comedy event.

Plus, just a moment ago, I wrote โ€œIโ€™ll do my best, Rinoโ€ on a note with my own hand. The evidence is already there. If this went to trial, Iโ€™d definitely lose. Iโ€™d be found guilty in the โ€œYouth Trial.โ€

I look at the blackboard.

There are mathematical formulas written on the blackboard.

But in my head, the โ€œName-Calling Episodeโ€ from Volume 7 of I Donโ€™t Need Youth!! was playing.

The protagonist calls the heroine by name for the first time.

The heroine turns bright red.

The protagonist also looks away, embarrassed.

The readers punch their pillows.

I did the same back then.

But now, Iโ€™m not the one doing the punching.

Iโ€™m the one getting punched.

Someone, please throw a pillow at me.

When class ended, Hara and Shinozaki came over as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

โ€œWow, I never thought the day would come when Takahara-kun would call her โ€˜Rino.โ€™โ€

โ€œIt was โ€˜Hoshimiya-sanโ€™ just yesterday. Things sure are moving fast, huh?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not โ€˜moving fast.โ€™โ€

I denied it immediately.

But my denial lacked any conviction.

Rino, sitting to my right, was looking at me with her chin resting on her hand. Her expression was that of a girl who was completely content. The more I denied it, the more it seemed to prove the opposite to everyone around me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWhat is it?โ€

โ€œCall me Rino right now.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause I want you to.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t make demands like that in the classroom.โ€

Rino lowered her eyes slightly.

โ€œArenโ€™t you going to call me that anymore?โ€

Here it comes.

That voice.

A thin, quiet voice that cuts straight to my sense of guilt.

Hara muttered, โ€œWhoa, Rinoโ€™s signature move is out,โ€ and Shinozaki cheered, โ€œGo for it, Takahara-kun!โ€ as if it were none of her business.

I exhaled deeply.

โ€œโ€ฆRino.โ€

The moment I said it, Rinoโ€™s face lit up.

Hara clapped her hands.

โ€œYes, so noble!โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s youth for you, huh?โ€

Shinozaki nodded casually.

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s different, then?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆEverything.โ€

My rebuttal was weak.

I knew it myself.

Rino happily tugged at my sleeve.

Her fingertips felt just a little softer than usual. It wasnโ€™t the way she used to grip me to keep me from escaping, but rather a touch that seemed to confirm I was right there.

Does just calling my name make such a difference?

I was taken aback by the change.

Lunchtime.

As we headed to our usual spot behind the warehouse, Rino leaned toward me slightly before opening her lunchbox.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œYes.โ€

โ€œToday, Iโ€™m going to call you Seita by your name more often, too.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ve been calling me that all along, havenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œYeah. But today, it means something different.โ€

โ€œHow is it different?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the kind of โ€˜Seitaโ€™ Iโ€™ll call you on the day you call me Rino.โ€

โ€œIs that some kind of philosophy?โ€

Rino had a serious expression on her face.

I almost laughed, but I held it in.

For her, this was serious.

Calling my name.

Having me call her name.

She cherished something as simple as that so deeply.

When she treated it with such care, I couldnโ€™t bring myself to treat it casually either.

โ€œSeita, do you want some rolled omelet?โ€

โ€œAgain?โ€

โ€œTodayโ€™s rolled omelet is to celebrate us calling each other by name.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of celebration is that?โ€

โ€œI made it a little sweeter.โ€

โ€œSo the celebration shows up in the seasoning, huh?โ€

After hesitating a moment, I ate the rolled omelet she handed me.

Itโ€™s sweet.

A little sweeter than before.

Rino was staring intently at my reaction.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆItโ€™s delicious, Rino.โ€

I called her name on my own.

I realized it after I said it.

Itโ€™s over.

Iโ€™ve already started calling her by name naturally.

Rino froze, still holding her chopsticks.

The next moment, she set her lunchbox on her lap and covered her face with both hands.

โ€œSeita, I canโ€™t handle that.โ€

โ€œWhat canโ€™t you handle?โ€

โ€œโ€˜Itโ€™s delicious, Rinoโ€™โ€”thatโ€™s a no-go.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re the one who asked me to call you by your name, werenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œBut catching me off guard like that is different.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s unfair.โ€

Rinoโ€™s face was flushed all the way to her ears as she kept her hands over her face.

Seeing her like that, I felt a warmth deep in my chest again.

The old me would have run away from this kind of atmosphere.

Itโ€™s getting close.

Too sweet.

I have to walk away before I get hurt.

Thatโ€™s what I would have thought back then.

But now, I didnโ€™t run away.

In fact, seeing Rino looking so happy made me feel a little happy too.

That was the biggest change of all.

After we finished our lunches, Rino took the โ€œI Donโ€™t Need Youth!!โ€ anthology out of her bag.

โ€œSeita, letโ€™s read yesterdayโ€™s โ€˜name-calling chapterโ€™ again.โ€

โ€œWas there even a โ€˜name-calling chapterโ€™ in this anthology?โ€

โ€œYesterday was our โ€˜name-calling chapter.โ€™โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t turn reality into a series.โ€

โ€œThen today is the sequel.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t turn this into a story.โ€

Rino laughed cheerfully and opened the book.

What was printed there was a short story in which the heroine practices calling the protagonist by his first name.

The moment I saw the cover, I clutched my head.

โ€œWhy that one right now?โ€

โ€œMaybe itโ€™s fate.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a trap set by the editorial department.โ€

As I read on, the heroine blushed repeatedly just from calling his name, while the protagonist pretended not to notice but was secretly flustered inside.

I stopped turning the pages.

It hit me hard.

It hit me way too hard.

It was too closely linked to reality.

โ€œSeita, youโ€™re just like this protagonist.โ€

โ€œI knew youโ€™d say that.โ€

โ€œBut you call me by my first name properly, unlike this protagonist.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t compare me to him.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why I like you.โ€

Rino said it casually.

I tried to act like I was used to it, but failed.

My cheeks grew hot.

Rino saw that and smiled happily.

She really seems happy when I get embarrassed.

I wonder if she feeds off my reactions.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYes.โ€

โ€œYou know, people often call me Rino Hoshimiya.โ€

Her voice suddenly softened a little.

โ€œOn TV, in magazines, at schoolโ€”everyone calls me โ€˜Hoshimiya-sanโ€™ or โ€˜Rino-chanโ€™ or โ€˜Hoshimiya Rino.โ€™ But when you call me โ€˜Rino,โ€™ Seita, it feels a little different.โ€

โ€œDifferent?โ€

โ€œYeah. It feels like youโ€™re looking right at me when you call me that.โ€

Rino closed her book.

โ€œIt feels like my name, not just the name of a celebrity.โ€

I was at a loss for words.

Calling her by name.

Something as simple as that means so much to her.

Hoshimiya Rinoโ€”so many people call her by that name.

But for most of them, itโ€™s just a name on a screen, maybe something like a brand name.

The โ€œRinoโ€ I call is the name of the girl right next to me.

When I thought of it that way, those two characters suddenly felt so heavy.

โ€œโ€ฆRino.โ€

I called out softly.

She looked up.

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œThere are still a lot of things I canโ€™t quite say right yetโ€ฆโ€

My throat tightened a little.

Still, I didnโ€™t back down; I kept going.

โ€œAt least Iโ€™ll make sure to remember how to call you.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes widened.

Her eyes slowly filled with tears.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œPlease donโ€™t cry.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t help it.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s too soon.โ€

โ€œBut thatโ€™s what you said, Seita.โ€

Rino laughed as she wiped the corners of her eyes with her finger.

It was hard to tell if she was crying or laughing.

But seeing that expression, I felt a little relieved.

It was because I felt that this time, my words hadnโ€™t been a rejection, but had actually reached her.

The prep bell rang.

On the way back to the classroom, Rino called my name repeatedly from beside me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat is it?โ€

โ€œI just wanted to call you.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a waste of breath.โ€

โ€œCall me too.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆRino.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

Just that exchange was enough to make her smile with genuine happiness.

When we got back to the classroom, Hara and Shinozaki reacted as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

โ€œWelcome backโ€”the โ€˜call-each-other-by-nameโ€™ couple.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not a couple.โ€

โ€œThen what are you?โ€

Hara asked with a smirk.

I was at a loss for words.

Friends.

Saying that felt like a lie.

Lovers.

That wasnโ€™t quite right either.

Then what were we?

As I struggled to answer, Rino quietly laughed beside me.

โ€œA relationship that doesnโ€™t have a name yet.โ€

At those words, the classroom fell slightly silent.

Haraโ€™s eyes widened.

Shinozaki let out a soft โ€œWhoa.โ€

I looked at Rino.

She looked at me, seeming a little shy but still happy.

โ€œBut Seita is Seita, and Iโ€™m Rino.โ€

Rino said that.

โ€œAt least that much is settled.โ€

I couldnโ€™t argue with that.

A relationship without a name.

But a relationship where we can at least call each other by our real names.

It was ambiguous, precarious, and still a little scary.

But for us right now, that was probably enough.

When I sat down, another note slid over from Rino.

โ€œSeita, starting today, please call me Rino properly.โ€

I thought for a moment, then wrote my reply.

โ€œGot it, Rino.โ€

When I handed the note back, Rino buried her face in her desk again.

Hara saw this and couldnโ€™t hold back her laughter; her shoulders were shaking.

Shinozaki muttered, looking sleepy.

โ€œItโ€™s actually pretty amazing that theyโ€™re not dating, considering all this.โ€

I pretended not to hear them.

To my right, Rino was holding the note carefully with both hands.

I exhaled softly as I looked at the blackboard.

My teenage insecurities still havenโ€™t gone away.

But if just hearing her name makes my heart feel this warmโ€ฆ

Maybe this weird kind of adolescence isnโ€™t so bad after all.
