Episode 46 – A Special Relationship Without a Name

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

The next morning.

Rino was standing in front of our usual convenience store, just as she always did.

But today, even after she spotted me, she didnโ€™t rush over right away. Holding her bag with both hands, she looked at me with a slightly nervous expression.

It was probably because of yesterdayโ€™s phone call.

It was the first time Iโ€™d spoken to her with almost no honorifics.

Iโ€™d lowered the wall Iโ€™d kept upโ€”out of fear of approaching Rinoโ€”just a tiny bit. Rino seemed to view this as a much bigger deal than I did.

Itโ€™s not like I wasnโ€™t aware of it myself.

If anything, I was so conscious of it that Iโ€™d practiced my greeting at least seven times in my head after leaving home.

Good morning, Rino.

No. Iโ€™m slipping back.

Good morning, Rino-san.

Calling her by her first name loses half its meaning.

Good morning, Rino.

Thatโ€™s it.

But when Iโ€™m actually standing in front of her, the difficulty level skyrockets.

How on earth do the protagonists in romantic comedies manage to call her by her first name with such a cool, calm expression? Do they undergo some kind of special heart training or something?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆGood morning, Rino.โ€

I managed to say it somehow.

Rinoโ€™s eyes widened, then her cheeks slowly turned red.

โ€œGood morning, Seita.โ€

Even though it was just a simple greeting, a strangely sweet atmosphere filled the air.

I couldnโ€™t stand it, so I started walking past Rino.

โ€œLetโ€™s go. Weโ€™ll be late.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Rino fell into step right beside me.

Her expression was so relaxed she couldnโ€™t hide it, even first thing in the morning.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œCall me that one more time.โ€

โ€œI just did.โ€

โ€œThe Seita from yesterday wouldโ€™ve said, โ€˜I already did.โ€™โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t keep track of every little detail.โ€

โ€œI remember everything.โ€

Itโ€™s scary.

But even that fear feels closer to me than it used to.

After walking a short distance, Rino peered up at my face.

โ€œDid you sleep well last night?โ€

โ€œPretty well. How about you, Rino?โ€

โ€œI stayed up late watching Seitaโ€™s โ€˜Iโ€™m homeโ€™ over and over.โ€

โ€œGo to sleep.โ€

โ€œI like the way you just said that.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t we in that phase where youโ€™re happy no matter what I say?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s because Seitaโ€™s close by.โ€

Rino said that and tugged on my sleeve.

Her usual gesture.

But after looking at her hand and hesitating for a moment, I reached out and touched her fingertips myself.

Not her sleeveโ€”I took her hand.

Rinoโ€™s feet almost stopped.

โ€œSeita?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆJust until we get to a quieter spot.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Rino squeezed my hand back.

Holding hands on our morning walk to school.

Calling each other by name, making plans to meet up, checking how much sleep we got last night.

When I think about it calmly, what on earth are we doing?

No, donโ€™t think about it.

If my โ€œteenage insecuritiesโ€ start analyzing the situation, my mind will just shut down.

We walked hand-in-hand along the short path from the convenience store to school.

Rino kept glancing at my profile.

โ€œDonโ€™t stare so much.โ€

โ€œI want to.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard to walk like this, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s fine because youโ€™re holding my hand, Seita.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t treat me like a guide dog.โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s Seita, I donโ€™t mind where you take me.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re already being a drag this early in the morning.โ€

โ€œOnly with Seita.โ€

As we neared the school, we started seeing more students.

Normally, Rino would let go of my hand before we got there.

Considering sheโ€™s a celebrity, that was only natural.

But today, for some reason, Rinoโ€™s fingers wouldnโ€™t let go.

If anything, her grip tightened just a little.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆJust a little longer.โ€

Her voice was soft.

โ€œYesterday, Seita went back to his friends, right? That made me happy. But when I realized thereโ€™s a part of Seitaโ€™s life I donโ€™t know about, I felt a little lonely.โ€

โ€œI was just hanging out with Kyosuke and the others.โ€

โ€œI know. But I still feel lonely.โ€

This is a hassle.

Itโ€™s a burden.

But right now, I was actually a little glad she was telling me how she felt without hiding it.

The old me would have put up a wall the moment she said something like that. Iโ€™d be afraid of her expectations and try to keep my distance.

But now, I just want to put Rinoโ€™s mind at ease.

โ€œWeโ€™ll be together at lunch today, right?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAnd after school, if I donโ€™t have work, Iโ€™ll head home.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t have any today.โ€

โ€œThen letโ€™s go home together.โ€

Rino stopped walking.

I stopped too, pulled by the hand she was holding.

โ€œSeita asked me out.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t turn that into a special occasion every time.โ€

โ€œI will.โ€

โ€œThen keep this afternoon free.โ€

After I said it, I was surprised myself.

I hadnโ€™t used polite language.

In fact, the way Iโ€™d said it made it sound as if going home with Rino was a given.

Rino smiled, her eyes glistening.

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll keep it open for Seita.โ€

โ€œStop saying โ€˜for me.โ€™โ€

โ€œDo you mind?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI donโ€™t mind.โ€

Rino wrapped both hands around mine.

โ€œIโ€™m already so happy this early in the morning.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to school, you know.โ€

โ€œAs long as Iโ€™m with Seita, anywhere is fine.โ€

โ€œIt doesnโ€™t matter where we go when it comes to attendance.โ€

I managed to get Rino to walk, and let go of her hand just before we reached the school gate.

But the warmth from holding her hand didnโ€™t fade even after we reached the classroom.

When we entered the classroom, Hara and Shinozaki looked over at us.

Hara looked at Rinoโ€™s face, then at me. Then, as if sheโ€™d figured something out, she narrowed her eyes.

โ€œRino, youโ€™ve been all smiles since this morning.โ€

โ€œI was holding hands with Seita.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to report that!โ€

Hara slammed his fist on the desk.

โ€œSince this morning!? On the way to school!?โ€

โ€œJust part of the way.โ€

โ€œEven part of the way is enough!โ€

Shinozaki looked at me while yawning sleepily.

โ€œYou look like Takahara-kun was holding your hand.โ€

โ€œCan you really tell just by looking at my face?โ€

When I snapped back reflexively, the two of them froze at the same time.

Rino looked at me, too.

โ€œTakahara-kun, just nowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou talked normally, didnโ€™t you?โ€

Damn it.

Iโ€™d dropped the honorifics with everyone except Rino, too.

Was it because of my conversation with Kyosuke and the others yesterday? Or maybe, by lowering the wall between me and Rino, the mask I wear in public had loosened a little.

โ€œItโ€™s no big deal. Thatโ€™s pretty normal, right?โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

Rino called out to me.

When I looked at her, she seemed slightly displeased for some reason.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t just talk like that to me.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re jealous of that?โ€

โ€œI thought I was the only one who got to be close to Seita.โ€

The sparkle faded from Rinoโ€™s eyes.

Hara took a half-step back.

Shinozaki watched with amusement.

I let out a sigh and gently pressed my fingertip against Rinoโ€™s forehead.

โ€œYouโ€™re the one I talk to the closest, arenโ€™t you, Rino?โ€

The classroom fell silent.

It took me a few seconds to realize what Iโ€™d just said.

Rino stood frozen, still holding her forehead.

Haraโ€™s mouth hung open, and Shinozaki, unusually, had widened his sleepy eyes.

โ€œโ€ฆSeita.โ€

โ€œThat just came out naturally.โ€

โ€œClosest?โ€

โ€œI meant physical distance.โ€

โ€œEmotional?โ€

โ€œPhysical.โ€

โ€œWe were holding hands this morning, after all.โ€

Hara perked up.

โ€œYou two disappear together at lunchtime, and you go home together after school, right?โ€

โ€œHow do you know that?โ€

โ€œBecause I just heard it!โ€

Rino grabbed my sleeve and snuggled up to me, looking happy.

โ€œHe said Iโ€™m the closest.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t repeat that.โ€

โ€œSeita said it.โ€

โ€œI phrased it wrong.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t accept any corrections.โ€

I put my head in my hands.

But I didnโ€™t feel like pushing Rino away.

If anything, I even found myself thinking that as long as she felt reassured, that was fine.

My teenage insecurities were losing even the energy to protest.

Lunchtime.

When I spread out my lunch behind the warehouse as usual, Rino sat right next to me.

Our shoulders were touching.

โ€œYouโ€™re too close.โ€

โ€œBecause Iโ€™m the closest.โ€

โ€œAre you going to keep using that line?โ€

โ€œFor the rest of my life.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a long time.โ€

Rino happily opened her lunchbox and held out a rolled omelet.

โ€œHere you go, Seita.โ€

โ€œI can feed myself.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a reward for working hard yesterday.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t treat me like a kid.โ€

โ€œWell, then, itโ€™s because I want to feed you.โ€

I had no way out.

I glanced around.

No one was there.

Reluctantly, I opened my mouth, and Rino fed me the rolled omelet.

โ€œHowโ€™s it taste?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s delicious.โ€

Until now, I had always replied, โ€œItโ€™s delicious.โ€

Hearing those words slip out naturally, Rino froze again.

โ€œSeita, say it again.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s delicious.โ€

โ€œIs what I made delicious?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s delicious.โ€

Rino set down her chopsticks and covered her face with both hands.

โ€œI canโ€™t take this anymore.โ€

โ€œI was just giving my honest opinion.โ€

โ€œSeita ate my cooking and said โ€˜Itโ€™s deliciousโ€™ in a low voice.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t explain itโ€”itโ€™ll just make me even more embarrassed.โ€

Rino squirmed in embarrassment for a while, but eventually peeked at me through the gaps between her fingers.

โ€œSeita, will you let me try some too?โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYour lunch.โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

โ€œSeita, feed me.โ€

โ€œWhy does it have to be like that?โ€

Rino opened her mouth slightly and waited.

She looked as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

After hesitating for a moment, I took a piece of fried chicken from my lunchbox.

When I brought it to Rinoโ€™s lips, she ate it with a happy expression.

โ€œItโ€™s delicious.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s frozen food, though.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s special because Seita fed it to me.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t mix emotions with taste.โ€

โ€œSeitaโ€™s mixed in there, too.โ€

I didnโ€™t get it.

I didnโ€™t get it, but since Rino looked so happy, I lost the will to press her further.

After finishing her lunch, Rino rubbed her eyesโ€”she looked a little sleepy, maybe because sheโ€™d worked late last night.

โ€œYouโ€™re sleep-deprived, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œI was reading Seitaโ€™s messages.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t blame it on me. Get some sleep.โ€

โ€œBut then Iโ€™ll have less lunch break time with Seita.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m right here.โ€

Rino looked at me.

โ€œWill you stay until I wake up?โ€

โ€œSure.โ€

It just slipped out again.

Rino stared at my face for a moment, then slowly rested her head on my shoulder.

Her soft hair brushed against my cheek.

Her sweet scent was right there.

My heart started racing in an instant.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œJust for a little while.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOkay.โ€

I couldnโ€™t refuse.

With her head still resting on my shoulder, Rino closed her eyes.

I couldnโ€™t move.

If I moved, Iโ€™d wake her up.

So, even though my shoulder was getting a little numb, I stayed seated just like that.

After a while, Rinoโ€™s breathing settled into a quiet rhythm.

She must have fallen asleep.

I looked at her profile.

She wasnโ€™t the perfect Rino Hoshimiya I saw at work.

Nor was she the popular girl surrounded by everyone at school.

She was just Rino, sleeping soundly and completely at ease on my shoulder.

Her bangs were hanging slightly over her eyes.

After hesitating for a moment, I gently brushed them aside with my finger.

โ€œโ€ฆYouโ€™re way too vulnerable.โ€

I muttered under my breath.

Then, the corners of Rinoโ€™s mouthโ€”which I thought were closed in sleepโ€”curved up just a little.

โ€œYouโ€™re awake, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œI just woke up.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t lie.โ€

โ€œSeita touched my hair.โ€

โ€œIt was getting in the way.โ€

โ€œDo it some more.โ€

โ€œGo back to sleep.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

Rino closed her eyes again.

But this time, she wrapped her arm around mine.

โ€œThis way, Iโ€™ll know if Seita runs away.โ€

โ€œI wonโ€™t run away.โ€

When I answered that, Rino pressed her cheek against my shoulder, looking satisfied.

I looked up at the sky.

Behind the warehouse during lunch break.

A girl sleeping on my shoulder.

Our arms intertwined.

The bento we fed each other.

We hold hands on the way to school in the morning, and weโ€™ve even promised to walk home together after school.

Just what stage am I at, exactly?

If this were I Donโ€™t Need Youth!!, it wouldnโ€™t be unusual to have already had a couple of confession scenes by now.

But our relationship still doesnโ€™t have a name.

Someone important.

The person closest to me.

The place I want to go home to.

That much, at least, is already decided.

โ€œSeita.โ€

With her eyes still closed, Rino called out softly.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s hold hands on the way home after school, okay?โ€

โ€œAs long as itโ€™s somewhere with few people around.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œAlso, if youโ€™re sleepy, donโ€™t force yourself to make a detourโ€”letโ€™s just go straight home.โ€

โ€œTo Seitaโ€™s house?โ€

โ€œTo Rinoโ€™s house, of course.โ€

โ€œSeita, come too.โ€

โ€œWhy does it have to be like that?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going home together, right?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t read too much into it.โ€

Rino giggled and hugged my arm even tighter.

โ€œBut Seita, if I ask you to come, youโ€™ll come, right?โ€

I couldnโ€™t deny it right away.

Weโ€™d played cards at Rinoโ€™s house before.

We still had a promise to read I Donโ€™t Need Youth!! together.

Above all, I found myself wanting to spend more time with her.

โ€œโ€ฆJust for a little while today.โ€

Rino opened her eyes.

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m worried about letting a tired Rino go home alone.โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI like you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say that out of the blue.โ€

โ€œI said it because I like you.โ€

โ€œI told you to go to sleep.โ€

โ€œDo you like me too, Seita?โ€

My heart nearly stopped.

Rino was looking straight at me, her cheek resting on my shoulder.

We were at a distance that left me with no way out.

โ€œโ€ฆI did say youโ€™re important to me, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œIs that different from โ€˜I like youโ€™?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask me that right now.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll ask you someday.โ€

โ€œDo whatever you want.โ€

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll wait right here by your side, Seita.โ€

Rino closed her eyes again.

I adjusted my position slightly so I could lean against her more comfortably, being careful not to touch her hair.

Her expression softened.

We stayed like that until the pre-class bell rang.

Still in a relationship without a name.

But sharing each otherโ€™s time, voices, and body heat as if it were the most natural thing in the world..
