Episode 73 – A couple who get along well

The Love of My Childhood Friend, Who Has Overcome a Terminally Ill Diagnosis, Is Overwhelming

โ€œAyaka, whatโ€™s with this sudden change of heart?โ€

Kadowara asked Takagaki with a carefree expression on her face.

Iโ€™m sorry, but regarding Takagakiโ€™s sudden suggestion, I was actually feeling the same way as Kadowara at that moment.

โ€œLetโ€™s go to the beach together,โ€ huh?

I never would have expectedโ€ฆ that Takagakiโ€”who I thought had no interest in other peopleโ€”would actually suggest something like that. It was a bit surprising.

โ€œActuallyโ€ฆ the two of you right here helped me out a lot right when summer vacation started.โ€

The two people in front of Takagaki-sanโ€ฆ

In other words, looking at me and Kanade, Takagaki-san said to Kadokura-san.

โ€œSoโ€ฆ what does that mean? Is this some kind of โ€˜thank youโ€™ for back then?โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s that? Thatโ€™s so emotional.โ€

Kadokura-san smiled cheerfully.

โ€œThis is the first time Iโ€™ve ever heard Ayaka say the word โ€˜thank you.โ€™ Iโ€™ve heard her mention โ€˜paying a visit to show my gratitudeโ€™ a few times, though.โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆ itโ€™s just that everyone around me has always been a bunch of guys like you.โ€

โ€œAhaha. Iโ€™m so happy to be complimented.โ€

Am Iโ€ฆ being complimented?

Or rather, now that Iโ€™ve actually interacted with Kadokura-san properly for the first time, Iโ€™m wonderingโ€ฆ is she actually a pretty carefree, moody person?

Sheโ€™s scary when sheโ€™s in a snarky mood, but when sheโ€™s not, sheโ€™s not scaryโ€”or ratherโ€ฆ sheโ€™s a bit of a klutz, I guess.

โ€œHuh? Wait a sec. Ayaka, you just said you were inviting Kanade and the others to the beach as a thank-you, right?โ€

โ€œYeah. I did say that.โ€

โ€œThen what was the point of inviting me?โ€

โ€ฆThatโ€™s a sharp observation.

โ€œYouโ€™re not seriousโ€ฆ Did you just invite me on a whim even though you had no intention of going to the beach? Or did you just want me to witness you inviting your friends to the beach? Ahaha. No way youโ€™d do something that cruel, right?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s right.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re kidding, right!?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m kidding.โ€

Kadokura-san was shooting a protesting glance at Takagaki-san.

Facing that glare, Takagaki-san was grinning.

How should I put it? Theyโ€™re really in sync.

โ€œAyaka, were you always that mean?โ€

โ€œI was, right?โ€

โ€œYeah. You were.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just as mean as I am, though.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not true. I just say whateverโ€™s on my mind.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œRight?โ€

โ€ฆโ€ฆIn other words, she doesnโ€™t mean any harm, but she has a sharp tongue.

Isnโ€™t that worse than just having a bad personality?

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYouโ€™re the reason we got sidetracked.โ€

Takagaki must have been really annoyed at having her train of thought interrupted, because she glared at Kadokura.

โ€œSo, to make up for the other day, letโ€™s all four of us go to the beach.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆUh-huh.โ€

I was the one who looked a bit confused.

Well, itโ€™s no wonder.

After all, the gender ratio for the group Takagaki-san invited to the beach was one guy to three girls.

Iโ€™m already not used to being around girls, and on top of that, theyโ€™re all cuteโ€ฆ Itโ€™s no wonder Iโ€™d be hesitant.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆHey, Ayaka.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWell, I get that you invited me to the beach, but why did you invite me, exactly?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that complicated.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. After all, I donโ€™t really go to the beach that often. So I thought Iโ€™d have youโ€”since youโ€™re such a party girlโ€”show me a trendy beach.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a party girl, and I donโ€™t know any trendy beaches.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

Takagaki-san must not have expected Kadokura-sanโ€™s reaction; her eyes widened in surprise.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆR-really?โ€

โ€œYeah. Sorry about that.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆNo, itโ€™s my fault for not asking you properly beforehand.โ€

โ€œAnyway, letโ€™s try looking for one together tomorrow.โ€

โ€œYeah, that would really helpโ€ฆ Thank you.โ€

โ€ฆAll things considered, these two seem to get along pretty well.

โ€œSo, Iโ€™ll look for the beach tomorrow and let you know. Make sure to keep Wednesday open.โ€

Takagaki-san looked back and forth between me and Kanade as she spoke.

โ€œโ€ฆUm, Takagaki-san.โ€

โ€œJust so you know, Atsushi-kun.โ€

Takagaki-san, who had anticipated my words, glared at me.

โ€œYou donโ€™t have a say in this.โ€

โ€ฆCome on.
