Episode 53 – I fell in love

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Eighteen days until the cultural festival.

The next morning, the moment I spotted Rino in front of the convenience store, I instinctively looked at her forehead.

Naturally, there was nothing there.

There was no way any trace of my lips from last night could still be there. Yet, as soon as Rino noticed my gaze, she gently placed her hand on her forehead.

โ€œWere you looking here?โ€

โ€œNo, I wasnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThe spot where Seita kissed me yesterday.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bring that up first thing in the morning.โ€

โ€œIt hasnโ€™t gone away.โ€

โ€œWhat hasnโ€™t?โ€

โ€œThe feeling.โ€

Rinoโ€™s cheeks flushed as she smiled happily.

Please stop.

Donโ€™t make me relive yesterdayโ€™s memories so vividly before school even starts.

Iโ€™d spent the whole night replaying that moment in my mind.

Hugging Rino.

Telling her Iโ€™d missed her.

And kissing her on the forehead.

I chose all of it.

I wasnโ€™t swept up by the moment, nor did I give in because Rino was pressuring me.

Thatโ€™s exactly why itโ€™s so devastating.

A man who deals a fatal blow to his own teenage insecurities through his own actions. That was who I was now.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDo it again today.โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œYou answered right away.โ€

โ€œI have to go to school.โ€

โ€œWhat about on the way home?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not just a matter of changing the location.โ€

โ€œThen Seitaโ€™s place.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s even worse.โ€

โ€œBut you came to my house.โ€

โ€œI was only planning to look at the cultural festival photos.โ€

โ€œBut you hugged me.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s because Rino barged in.โ€

โ€œYou hugged me back.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI guess so.โ€

Seeing that I didnโ€™t deny it, Rinoโ€™s eyes narrowed happily.

In the past, I would have tried to downplay the meaning of those words.

It was an accident.

It just happened.

Thereโ€™s no deeper meaning.

I would have made those excuses over and over, trying to get back to a place where I could walk away at any time.

But I didnโ€™t want to pretend yesterday never happened.

โ€œDid you hate it?โ€

โ€œI wouldnโ€™t do it if I hated it.โ€

As I answered naturally, Rino stopped in her tracks.

I took a few steps forward before turning around.

โ€œWhatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œSeita, say that again.โ€

โ€œSay what?โ€

โ€œโ€˜I wouldnโ€™t do it if I hated it.โ€™โ€

โ€œIf you heard me, thatโ€™s good enough, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œSo, does that mean you wanted to do it?โ€

It was a verbal trap.

I was completely being led on.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆLetโ€™s go to school.โ€

โ€œYou ran away.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m trying to avoid being late.โ€

โ€œSeita, your ears are red.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the morning sun.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s cloudy today.โ€

Rino happily walked up beside me and linked her arm through mine.

โ€œYouโ€™re so close.โ€

โ€œYou were even closer yesterday.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not a fair comparison.โ€

โ€œSeitaโ€™s chest was warm.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t bring that up.โ€

โ€œYour heart was beating really fast.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go telling anyone!โ€

My heart had been working overtime since this morning, too.

โ€ปใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ป

As soon as we entered the classroom, Hara and Shinozaki immediately sensed something was off.

To be precise, it was Rino who was acting strangely.

Even after sitting down, she kept touching her forehead repeatedly, and each time she did, a smile would spread across her face.

No matter how you looked at it, she was behaving like someone whoโ€™d been up to something.

โ€œRino.โ€

Hara rested both hands on the desk and leaned in close.

โ€œDid you go to Takahara-kunโ€™s house yesterday?โ€

โ€œNo, I didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œSo Takahara-kun went to your house, Rino?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œSeita!โ€

Called by name so forcefully, I reflexively shrugged my shoulders.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œDid you go to Rinoโ€™s house yesterday?โ€

โ€œI just checked the photos from the cultural festival.โ€

โ€œYou went all the way to her house just to check photos?โ€

โ€œIt just happened that way.โ€

โ€œTell me exactly how it happened.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s personal.โ€

Hara shifted her gaze back from me to Rino.

โ€œWhat happened?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a secret.โ€

Rino answered, still touching her forehead.

โ€œItโ€™s an important secret just between Seita and me.โ€

The classroom atmosphere grew tense in an instant.

โ€œWatch how you say that!โ€

โ€œRino, the way you put it makes people imagine all sorts of things.โ€

Shinozaki pointed this out, looking sleepy.

But Rino seemed rather pleased.

โ€œEven if they imagine things, only Seita and I know the truth.โ€

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œStop itโ€”youโ€™ll ruin my reputation too.โ€

As I pressed my hand to my forehead, Hara narrowed her eyes.

โ€œTakahara-kun, that reactionโ€ฆ something really did happen, didnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œNothing happened.โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

Rino called out to me.

I had nothing but a bad feeling about this.

โ€œItโ€™s not like nothing happened.โ€

โ€œRino!โ€

โ€œSomething happened that Iโ€™ll never forget.โ€

The murmur in the classroom grew louder.

I buried my face in my desk.

Itโ€™s over.

My high school life is going up in flames right before the cultural festival.

โ€œBut I wonโ€™t tell anyone.โ€

Saying that, Rino intertwined her little finger with mine under the desk.

No one around us could see it.

A connection just between the two of us.

Recalling what had happened yesterday in the empty classroom, I couldnโ€™t say another word.

Rino isnโ€™t hiding a secret.

Sheโ€™s cherishing it as something that belongs only to the two of us.

Thinking that, my heart warmed just a little.

โ€œYour face is red, Takahara-kun.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hot in here.โ€

โ€œBut the windowโ€™s openโ€”โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go digging into my business.โ€

I had no allies anywhere.

The only person next to me, Rino, was on my sideโ€”but she was also the mastermind behind the whole incident.

ใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ป

After school, a meeting of the cultural festival planning committee was held.

It was a meeting to check on each classโ€™s progress and share information about the dayโ€™s campus layout and important guidelines.

Rino and I grabbed our materials and headed to the special classroom.

Inside the classroom, two studentsโ€”one boy and one girlโ€”selected from each class had gathered.

Feeling a little nervous, I sat down in an empty seat.

Rino was next to me.

Just that made it a little easier to breathe.

However, as soon as the meeting began, another problem arose.

โ€œWeโ€™ll be featuring photos of representatives from each class on promotional posters around the school.โ€

A senior who appeared to be the executive committee chair explained from the front.

โ€œNext week, after youโ€™ve prepared the costumes and props for your performances, weโ€™ll take photos of the two representatives. Basically, weโ€™d like the two members of the executive committee to be the representatives.โ€

I looked up from the materials.

Representative photos.

Posters.

Displayed around the school.

In other words, a photo of Rino and me standing side by side in matching aprons would be seen by the entire student body.

No way.

โ€œLetโ€™s ask someone else.โ€

When I whispered that, Rino turned to look at me.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no need for me to be on the poster. Rino and Hara-san would look great together.โ€

โ€œI want Seita.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s for publicity, so we should prioritize how it looks.โ€

โ€œI want to be in the photo with Seita.โ€

Rinoโ€™s voice stiffened just a little.

โ€œThe Culture Festival Executive Committee is me and Seita.โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œAre you going to put someone else next to me?โ€

The light in her eyes slowly faded.

It was less jealousy than it was anxiety.

Yesterday, Rino said sheโ€™d treasure the group photo she took with me.

Rino had hoped Iโ€™d be part of her memories of the cultural festival.

For someone like her, my stepping aside to let someone else take my place in the representative photo probably isnโ€™t just a simple role change.

โ€œSeita, do you hate having your picture taken with me?โ€

โ€œNo, I donโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThen why are you running away?โ€

Those words made my heart ache deep inside.

Running away.

Thatโ€™s right.

Once again, the moment I felt scared, I tried to step out of the picture.

If Iโ€™m in the photo, Iโ€™ll draw attention.

People might say something.

They might laugh at me, saying I donโ€™t measure up standing next to Rino.

Imagining that future, I tried to make myself disappear.

โ€œโ€ฆBecause Iโ€™m scared.โ€

I answered honestly.

A quiet voice during the meeting.

Even so, Rino heard me.

โ€œIโ€™m still scared of being seen by the whole school. If someone like me were sitting next to you, I think people would say something.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say โ€˜someone like me.โ€™โ€

Rinoโ€™s fingertips brushed against my hand under the desk.

โ€œSeita, youโ€™re the person I want standing next to me.โ€

โ€œBut everyone else might not think so.โ€

โ€œNo matter what anyone else thinks, Iโ€™m the one who chooses.โ€

Rinoโ€™s finger slipped between mine.

โ€œI want to stand next to you, Seita. And I want you to stand next to me, too.โ€

Her words were straightforward.

At work, Rino stands beside many people.

Actors.

Models.

Other idols.

But at our schoolโ€™s cultural festival, she says sheโ€™ll choose me.

โ€œIf you donโ€™t want to take a photo, you donโ€™t have to.โ€

Rinoโ€™s voice softened slightly.

โ€œBut donโ€™t back out just because you think weโ€™re not a good match. I donโ€™t want you to disappear, Seita.โ€

The words sank slowly deep into my heart.

I squeezed Rinoโ€™s hand in return.

โ€œโ€ฆOkay.โ€

โ€œWill you take the picture?โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s with you, Rino.โ€

Rinoโ€™s face lit up instantly.

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œBut donโ€™t get too close, okay?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re checking the costumes, so our shoulders will be touching.โ€

โ€œIs that already a done deal?โ€

โ€œShould we hold hands, too?โ€

โ€œAre you planning to put that on a poster?โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t like it, Seita, weโ€™ll hold hands where no one can see.โ€

It looked like weโ€™d be holding hands after all.

I let out a small sigh.

Even so, my anxiety had eased a bit compared to earlier.

The meeting ended, and we left the special classroom.

As we walked down the hallway, Rino didnโ€™t let go of my hand.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m looking forward to the photos.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m nervous.โ€

โ€œJust look at me.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re not going to look at the camera, even though weโ€™re taking a picture?โ€

โ€œJust keep looking at me until right before the shot.โ€

It was just like our group photo before.

If I looked at Rino, I could manage a slightly more natural smile.

She remembered that.

โ€œIf thatโ€™s the case, maybe Iโ€™ll be okay.โ€

โ€œThen when we take the picture, Iโ€™ll tell Seita that I like him.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™ll just make your face look even weirder.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll smile.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll just blush.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s fine. Itโ€™s a face you only show me.โ€

Rino stopped and stepped right in front of me.

There were few other students in the hallway after school.

She reached for the collar of my uniform and straightened the part that was slightly crooked.

โ€œOn the day of the photo shoot, Iโ€™ll fix that for you, too.โ€

โ€œI can do it myself.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll fix your hair, too.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not that messy.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tie your apron, too.โ€

โ€œI can do that myself, too.โ€

โ€œI want to do it all myself.โ€

Her hand, which had been touching my collar, remained there, resting on my chest.

Rino looked up at me from close range.

โ€œBecause I want Seita to be the one standing next to me.โ€

My heart pounded loudly.

I had a feeling that wasnโ€™t just about the costume.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s unfair of you to say it like that.โ€

โ€œSeita was being unfair yesterday, too.โ€

Rino touched her forehead.

The spot where Iโ€™d kissed her.

โ€œIf you do it again today, weโ€™ll call it a tie.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of contest is this?โ€

โ€œThe number of times Iโ€™ve let you do whatever you want.โ€

โ€œIf thatโ€™s the case, Iโ€™m clearly losing by a landslide.โ€

I froze at the words that had slipped out of my mouth.

Rino stopped moving, too.

โ€œSeita, just nowโ€ฆโ€

โ€œForget it.โ€

โ€œDid you just admit that Iโ€™m making you fall for me?โ€

โ€œIt was just a figure of speech.โ€

โ€œDo you like me?โ€

โ€œNo, that wasnโ€™t what I meant.โ€

Rino took a step closer.

I took a step back, my back pressing against the wall.

My escape route vanished.

Rino isnโ€™t holding me down.

Sheโ€™s just looking up at me from point-blank range.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat?โ€

โ€œAre you starting to like me?โ€

I canโ€™t answer.

If I say no, itโ€™ll be a lie.

Iโ€™m still too scared to say yes.

As I remain silent, the look of hope in Rinoโ€™s eyes fades just a little.

I didnโ€™t want to see that look on her face.

So, before I could even think, I reached out.

I grabbed Rinoโ€™s wrist and pulled her closer.

Her body brushed against my chest.

โ€œSeita?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI am starting to.โ€

I whispered the answer softly into her ear.

Rinoโ€™s body trembled.

โ€œDo whatever you want.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make me say the whole thing.โ€

โ€œI want to hear it.โ€

โ€œThis is as far as I can go right now.โ€

โ€œBut you admitted it.โ€

โ€œJust a little.โ€

โ€œEven a little is fine.โ€

Rino buried her face in my chest and wrapped her arms around my back.

I put one arm around her back, too.

โ€œIโ€™m going to like you even more.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t go declaring that.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s make lots of memories before the cultural festival.โ€

โ€œThe purpose of the cultural festival has changed.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the cultural festival where Seita falls for me.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t drag the whole class into this.โ€

Rino gave a soft laugh.

Her voice resonated directly against my chest.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThank you for falling for me.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s still a work in progress.โ€

โ€œEven if itโ€™s a work in progress, youโ€™re coming toward me.โ€

Hearing those words, I tightened my grip around her just a little.

Iโ€™m still scared.

Of putting a name on our relationship, and of clearly acknowledging my own feelings.

But I could no longer deny the direction we were heading in.

Itโ€™s not that I want to pull away from Rino.

I want to get even closer to her.

Itโ€™s just that my heart hasnโ€™t caught up with the pace yet.

โ€œDonโ€™t rush.โ€

โ€œOkay. Iโ€™ll wait until Seita is ready.โ€

โ€œWhat if I runs away?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll chase after you.โ€

โ€œWerenโ€™t you supposed to wait?โ€

โ€œRunning away is different from standing still.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s tough.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Seitaโ€™s girl, after all.โ€

We hugged for a moment, then pulled apart before anyone came.

Even so, we immediately held hands again.

Eighteen days until the cultural festival.

Next week, the two of us will take the representative photo together.

And today, I finally admitted out loud that Iโ€™m starting to have feelings for Rino.
