Episode 54 – Like a married couple? No way!

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Fifteen days left until the cultural festival.

The day of the photo shoot for the school promotional posters had arrived.

In the classroom after school, the students on the hospitality team were doing a final check of their costumes, while the decoration team was carrying the finished signs and props out into the hallway.

And there I was, standing in front of the blackboard still wearing my boysโ€™ apron, while Rino inspected my appearance.

โ€œSeita, donโ€™t move.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s enough, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œYour collarโ€™s a little crooked.โ€

โ€œI just fixed it, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œYou touched it afterward, so it went back.โ€

Rinoโ€™s fingertips carefully smoothed out the collar of my uniform.

Her face was close.

It was close, but lately, I havenโ€™t been flustered by this kind of thing anymore.

No, thatโ€™s a lie.

My heart is still pounding like crazy.

Itโ€™s just that, on the surface, Iโ€™ve become able to handle it. You could also say that my teenage insecurities, worn down by days of relentless strain, are losing even the strength to scream.

โ€œNext, your hair.โ€

โ€œDo we really need to go that far?โ€

โ€œYes, we do.โ€

Rino reached for my bangs and began shaping them with her fingertips.

Perhaps because sheโ€™s had to help people get ready for work so many times, her movements were practiced.

โ€œSeita, look down a little.โ€

โ€œLike this?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

When I obediently followed her instructions, Rinoโ€™s face came even closer.

I could see every single one of her eyelashes.

I remembered the words sheโ€™d asked me in the hallway yesterday.

[Are you starting to like me?]

And Iโ€™d answered.

[I am.]

The moment I thought back on it, a wave of heat rose from deep within my body.

I looked away.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œYour face is red.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hot in the classroom.โ€

โ€œThe windowโ€™s open.โ€

โ€œMy apronโ€™s thick.โ€

โ€œBut it only covers from the waist down.โ€

Rino laughed cheerfully.

Donโ€™t cut off my escape routes one by one.

โ€œIs it because weโ€™re standing so close?โ€

โ€œIf youโ€™re aware of it, move away.โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

Her answer was immediate.

โ€œI want to see Seita up close today.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re going to be in a photo soon, arenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œPhotos arenโ€™t the same as the real thing.โ€

Even after she finished fixing my hair, Rino didnโ€™t move away right away.

She placed her hand on my cheek and looked closely at my face from the front.

โ€œYeah. You look cool.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say that.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œThat makes me even more nervous.โ€

โ€œThen just look at me.โ€

โ€œEven though weโ€™re taking a photo?โ€

โ€œJust until right before the shot.โ€

Sheโ€™d said those words to me before.

When I was afraid of being in a group photo, Rino told me to just look at her.

Itโ€™s the same today.

A poster that every student in the school will see.

Me standing next to Rino.

Just imagining it makes my heart flutter.

But I didnโ€™t think about running away.

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œIf I just look at you, Rino, Iโ€™ll be a little more at ease.โ€

When I answered, Rinoโ€™s hand paused on my cheek.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhen the shootโ€™s over, can I give you a hug?โ€

โ€œWhy would that happen?โ€

โ€œBecause what you just said made me happy.โ€

โ€œThat has nothing to do with the cultural festival shoot, does it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s a reward.โ€

โ€œFor who?โ€

โ€œFor me.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t give yourself a reward.โ€

Rino puffed out her cheeks in displeasure, but finally stepped away from me.

โ€œOnce itโ€™s over, if we can be alone togetherโ€ฆโ€

She added quietly.

I didnโ€™t answer and just checked the strings of her apron.

But I didnโ€™t refuse either.

Rino seemed satisfied with that alone and happily reached for her own apron.

โ€œRino, the string in the back is twisted.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t move.โ€

I moved behind Rino and untied the knot on her apron.

Until yesterday, that was something Rino used to do for me.

I straightened out the twist in the strings and tied them again behind her waist.

Her slender waist.

The sweet scent wafting from her hair.

The moment I became aware of it, my fingers almost stopped moving.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t move.โ€

โ€œSeitaโ€™s tying my apron for me.โ€

โ€œYou can see that, canโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œI want to take a picture.โ€

โ€œHow am I supposed to take a picture like this?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll ask Hara-san.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask he.โ€

But it was already too late.

โ€œDid you call me?โ€

Hara, who had been checking props a short distance away, was grinning as she held her smartphone.

โ€œI didnโ€™t call you.โ€

โ€œThat was a great shot just now. Takahara-kun tying Rinoโ€™s apron.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t take pictures.โ€

โ€œI already did.โ€

โ€œDelete it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll send it to Rino.โ€

โ€œThanks.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t let Rino thank either!โ€

Even Shinozaki glanced over at us and muttered in a sleepy voice.

โ€œItโ€™s like getting ready for a wedding, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the school festival.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re getting quicker with your comebacks.โ€

Laughter rises from the crowd around us.

Even as I felt my face grow hot, I didnโ€™t give up halfway through and finished tying Rinoโ€™s apron.

โ€œThatโ€™s good.โ€

I gave the knot a light tug to check it.

Rino turned around.

โ€œThanks, Seita.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re welcome.โ€

As I replied naturally, Rino reached around her back and touched the knot Iโ€™d tied.

โ€œIโ€™m definitely not untying this today.โ€

โ€œWonโ€™t that be a hassle when you change?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to wear it all the way home.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re planning to go home wearing an apron over your uniform?โ€

โ€œBecause you tied it for me, Seita.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll tie it for you again tomorrow.โ€

The moment the words left my mouth, Rino froze.

It took me a moment to realize what Iโ€™d just said.

[Iโ€™ll tie it for you again.]

It sounded as if it were a given that Iโ€™d be by Rinoโ€™s side time and time again from now on.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWhat?โ€

โ€œTomorrow, too?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll be wearing it on the day of the cultural festival, right?โ€

โ€œWill you tie it for me then, too?โ€

โ€œIf you canโ€™t do it yourself.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t answer so quickly.โ€

I know I can do it.

But Rino was happily pressing her hand against my back.

Seeing her face, I lost the will to correct myself.

ใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ป

The photo shoot took place in the wide hallway near the entrance.

To introduce each classโ€™s performance, the executive committee members were being photographed one by one.

Haunted house costumes.

Festival happi coats.

Flashy dresses for the play.

Amidst all that, we stood side by side, wearing matching aprons and holding the finished sign and menu.

The senior in charge of photography adjusted the cameraโ€™s position.

โ€œHoshimiya-san, move a little more toward the center. Takahara-kun, move over next to her too.โ€

I took a step closer as instructed.

Our shoulders touched.

Rinoโ€™s fingertips brushed against my hand from behind the sign.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œAre you nervous?โ€

โ€œPretty nervous.โ€

โ€œLook at me.โ€

I looked at Rino.

She wasnโ€™t giving the camera her perfect smile; instead, she was smiling at me with a gentle expression she reserved just for me.

โ€œSeita, you look cool today, too.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say that right before the shot.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m glad youโ€™re standing next to me.โ€

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œI like you.โ€

โ€œStop it right now.โ€

I couldnโ€™t help but laugh.

At that moment, the shutter clicked.

โ€œThat was a good one!โ€

The senior in charge of photography called out.

Damn it.

Iโ€™d laughed while still looking at Rino instead of the camera.

โ€œOne more shotโ€”this time, please both face the camera.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

As Rino replied, she hooked her little finger around mine from behind the sign.

No one could see it.

It was a connection just between us.

This time, we looked straight ahead.

But thanks to the warmth coming from beside me, I wasnโ€™t as scared as I had been before.

โ€œIโ€™m taking the picture. Three, two, one.โ€

The shutter clicked.

After taking a few shots, the senior checked the screen.

โ€œThe atmosphere is really nice. You both look naturalโ€”I think Iโ€™ll use this photo.โ€

The screen showed Rino and me standing side by side, both wearing the same apron.

Rino was smiling beautifully.

I looked more natural than Iโ€™d expected, too.

Our shoulders were touching, and our bodies were leaning slightly toward each other.

If the words โ€œCafรฉ Yลซgureโ€ were added below the photo, it would make a great advertisement for the shop.

However, it also looked like it was promoting our relationship more than the event itself.

โ€œSeita, I want this photo.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll get the digital file later, right?โ€

โ€œI want one just of the two of us.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that the one we just took?โ€

โ€œOne that we wonโ€™t show anyone.โ€

โ€œWhatโ€™s the difference?โ€

Rino tugged on my sleeve.

โ€œA closer shot.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re in the middle of a poster shoot.โ€

โ€œAfter weโ€™re done.โ€

The senior in charge of photography heard our conversation and laughed.

โ€œIf youโ€™d like, should I take one with phone?โ€

โ€œPlease do.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask him to do that.โ€

But Rino had already held out her phone.

We set the sign down on the floor and repositioned ourselves.

โ€œTakahara-kun, could you move a little closer to Hoshimiya-san?โ€

The senior told me.

When I moved my body slightly closer, Rino wrapped her arms around me as if to fill the gap.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œHe told me to get closer.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s a limit, isnโ€™t there?โ€

โ€œDo you mind?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI donโ€™t mind.โ€

Rino pressed her cheek against my shoulder.

Still wrapping both her arms around mine.

โ€œIโ€™m taking the picture.โ€

The camera was pointed at us.

I tried to look straight ahead.

Just before I did, Rino whispered in my ear.

โ€œSeita, I love you.โ€

โ€œYouโ€”โ€

The moment I turned around, the photo was taken.

The screen showed me facing Rino, and Rino smiling, looking only at me.

We were close enough that our noses almost touched.

We were pressed close together, and Rino hadnโ€™t let go of my arm.

The senior who took the photo fell silent for a moment.

โ€œโ€ฆThis looks more natural than the poster.โ€

โ€œShould we use this one?โ€

Rino asked happily.

โ€œDonโ€™t use it.โ€

โ€œBut it seems like it would be good for publicity.โ€

โ€œPublicity for what?โ€

The upperclassman handed the phone back to Rino while stifling a laugh.

โ€œLetโ€™s keep this one just for the two of you.โ€

โ€œThank you.โ€

Rino stared at the photo sheโ€™d received and immediately saved it as if it were a treasure.

โ€œIโ€™m sending it to Seita, too.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t need it.โ€

โ€œI sent it.โ€

My phone vibrated.

I had no say in the matter.

When I opened the screen, a photo of us gazing into each otherโ€™s eyes at close range appeared.

I didnโ€™t even think about deleting it.

On the contrary, I saved it on reflex.

โ€œDid you save it?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆJust in case.โ€

โ€œJust in case of what?โ€

โ€œIn case Rino loses it.โ€

โ€œSo we both have the same photo.โ€

Rino looked genuinely happy.

Seeing her face, the corners of my mouth turned up just a little.

We had just finished taking the photo and were about to head back to the classroom.

A few female students were walking down the hallway toward us.

One of them spotted Rino and called out.

โ€œItโ€™s Hoshimiya-san!โ€

In the blink of an eye, all eyes were on us.

โ€œWere you taking photos for the cultural festival?โ€

โ€œWhoโ€™s that guy next to you?โ€

โ€œIs he on the organizing committee with you?โ€

It was harmless curiosity.

Even so, my body stiffened reflexively.

People were looking at me standing next to Rino.

We didnโ€™t belong together.

Why her?

Even though no one had said anything yet, a voice formed on its own in my head.

I started to take half a step away from Rino.

At that moment, Rino took my hand.

Without hiding it.

Right in the middle of the hallway.

โ€œSeita.โ€

She didnโ€™t pull me hard.

She was just holding my hand, as if to confirm I was there.

The female studentsโ€™ gazes turned toward our clasped hands.

A murmur spread through the crowd.

โ€œRino, people are watching.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAre you sure this is okay?โ€

โ€œWhat about you, Seita?โ€

Rino asked back.

I looked around.

I was scared.

I still donโ€™t like being the center of attention.

Part of me wanted to run away.

But I didnโ€™t want to let go of her hand.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m a little scared.โ€

โ€œThen, should we hide?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

I squeezed Rinoโ€™s hand back.

โ€œLetโ€™s keep going like this all the way to the classroom.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes widened in surprise.

โ€œAre you sure?โ€

โ€œAs long as youโ€™re right here beside me.โ€

This time, I took a step closer on my own.

We returned to a distance where our shoulders touched.

I tried my best not to look at the expressions on the faces around us.

Instead, I looked at Rino.

She was smiling so happily she looked like she was about to cry.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI want to hug you right now.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re in the hallway, so hold off.โ€

โ€œWhat about when we get to the classroom?โ€

โ€œEveryoneโ€™ll be there.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll find a place where itโ€™s just the two of us.โ€

โ€œPut that determination toward preparing for the cultural festival instead.โ€

We started walking, still holding hands.

I could hear a faint murmur behind us.

My fear hadnโ€™t gone away.

Still, my feet didnโ€™t stop.

The old me would have pulled away from Rino the moment I felt someoneโ€™s gaze.

I would have made excuses about not wanting to cause her trouble, but really, it was to protect myself from getting hurt.

Today is different.

Rino wants to be by my side.

And I want to walk beside her, too.

So even if I was a little scared, I didnโ€™t want to let go.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI want to walk holding hands on the day of the cultural festival, too.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™ll be too many people.โ€

โ€œWe did it today.โ€

โ€œThere arenโ€™t that many people today, are there?โ€

โ€œThen, just for a little bit.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIf itโ€™s during a break.โ€

โ€œPromise?โ€

โ€œI promise.โ€

Rinoโ€™s fingers intertwined deeply with mine.

Fifteen days until the cultural festival.

The promotional poster will feature me smiling next to Rino.

And on our phones, thereโ€™s a photo thatโ€™s much closer than thatโ€”one we donโ€™t plan on showing anyone.
