Episode 59 – A Memory to Last a Lifetime

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Three days left until the cultural festival.

By this point, the atmosphere in the classroom had become completely different from our usual school life.

Class ends.

We move the desks.

We put on our aprons.

We check the signs.

We fix any misaligned decorations, hand out the final version of the menu, and confirm the duties of the customer service and cashier teams.

For me, staying behind in the classroom after school had become the norm.

Not long ago, that would have been unthinkable.

โ€œSeita, here.โ€

Rino held out a piece of paper in front of me.

It was the shift schedule for the day of the festival.

โ€œThe revised version?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

I took it and checked the details.

I was assigned to the cash register for the first half of the morning.

After that, Iโ€™d be serving customers for about an hour.

Iโ€™d take my break just after noon.

Rino was serving customers starting in the morning, and her break was scheduled to start at almost the same time as mine.

โ€œโ€ฆIs this a coincidence?โ€

I asked.

Rino smiled.

โ€œWhat do you think?โ€

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œBe honest.โ€

โ€œI worked hard to arrange it.โ€

โ€œI figured as much.โ€

I turned my gaze back to the shift schedule.

She hadnโ€™t messed up anyone elseโ€™s requests either.

It seemed sheโ€™d simply adjusted things skillfully so that our break times would overlap.

โ€œYou havenโ€™t caused any trouble for anyone else, have you?โ€

โ€œNo, I havenโ€™t. I checked with everyone.โ€

โ€œWell, thatโ€™s good, then.โ€

โ€œAre you happy?โ€

โ€œWell, sort of.โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™m happy.โ€

When I answered, Rino nodded with satisfaction.

โ€œThen letโ€™s go around together on the day of the event.โ€

โ€œWe only have a one-hour break, you know.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s still an hour.โ€

โ€œI think thereโ€™ll be a lot of people.โ€

โ€œItโ€™ll be fine because Seitaโ€™s here.โ€

โ€œIsnโ€™t that the other way around?โ€

Normally, Rinoโ€”as a top idolโ€”is the one surrounded by people.

Rather than me protecting her, itโ€™s more likely that Iโ€™ll get caught up in the crowd too.

โ€œIf Seita holds my hand, I wonโ€™t get lost.โ€

โ€œHigh school students shouldnโ€™t get lost at a cultural festival.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™ll be so many people.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re just making up an excuse to hold my hand, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œDid I give it away?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s way too obvious.โ€

Rino laughed cheerfully.

While we were having that conversation, I pinned the shift schedule to the wall.

The day of the cultural festival.

Up until now, weโ€™d been preparing for this moment.

But now that itโ€™s actually getting closer, I feel a flutter deep in my chest.

Iโ€™m excited.

Iโ€™m scared.

I donโ€™t want it to end.

I want the day to come soon.

A mix of emotions swirled inside me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

I heard Rinoโ€™s voice nearby.

โ€œThinking again?โ€

โ€œA little.โ€

โ€œAre you scared?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s part of it.โ€

โ€œWhat else?โ€

I looked around the classroom.

The decorations everyone had made.

The finished sign.

The menu weโ€™d revised over and over.

The group photo.

Going shopping.

Taking shelter from the rain.

Practicing serving customers.

Holding hands with Rino.

Hugging.

A kiss on the forehead.

That month of preparing for the cultural festival was packed with more memories than Iโ€™d ever imagined.

โ€œIโ€™m a little sad that itโ€™s ending,โ€

When I said that, Rinoโ€™s expression softened.

โ€œMe too.โ€

โ€œI wanted to run away at first, though.โ€

โ€œYou were planning to just stay home, after all.โ€

โ€œYou remembered that?โ€

โ€œI remember what Seita says.โ€

โ€œJust forget the parts that arenโ€™t convenient for you.โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

Rino stood next to me.

Our shoulders touched.

โ€œBut even after the cultural festival is over, the memories wonโ€™t fade.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œSeita wonโ€™t fade either, right?โ€

โ€œWhat do you mean by that?โ€

โ€œJust because the cultural festival is over, you wonโ€™t leave me, will you?โ€

Her voice trembled just a little.

I looked at Rino.

She wasnโ€™t smiling.

The preparations for the cultural festival will be over.

Thereโ€™ll be no reason to stay together every day after school.

Our relationship as members of the executive committee will also come to an end.

Rino must be worried about that, too.

โ€œI wonโ€™t leave you.โ€

I replied.

Rinoโ€™s eyes wavered.

โ€œEven without the cultural festival, weโ€™ll see each other in the morning, and weโ€™ll eat lunch together, right?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œAnd after school, if I donโ€™t have work, weโ€™ll walk home together.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œWeโ€™ll play cards, and weโ€™ll read I Donโ€™t Need Youth!! too.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah.โ€

โ€œSo, just because the cultural festival is over doesnโ€™t mean anything will change.โ€

It wasnโ€™t until I said that I realized it.

Without even noticing, Iโ€™d been taking my future with Rino for granted and factoring it into my plans.

Next week, too.

Next month, too.

And even further down the road.

The old me would have avoided making promises.

Because I was afraid of losing her.

Because I hated getting my hopes up.

But now, Iโ€™m the one saying it.

โ€œSeita.โ€

Rino grabs the sleeve of my school uniform.

โ€œIs that going to last forever?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make it sound like itโ€™s forever.โ€

โ€œHow long?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆWe donโ€™t have to decide that right now, do we?โ€

โ€œBut I want to be part of your future, Seita.โ€

It was a heavy statement, typical of Rino.

I smiled a little.

โ€œFor now, Iโ€™ll be there.โ€

โ€œFor now?โ€

โ€œAt least until after the cultural festival.โ€

โ€œWhat about next year?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll probably still be there, right?โ€

โ€œWhat about when we graduate?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re getting ahead of yourself.โ€

โ€œAnd after we graduate?โ€

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s take it one step at a time.โ€

I took Rinoโ€™s hand.

Not her sleeveโ€”her hand.

I intertwined my fingers with hers.

โ€œIโ€™m still a little scared to think about the future.โ€

Rinoโ€™s expression clouded over slightly.

I squeezed her hand again.

โ€œBut I donโ€™t want to be apart from you right now.โ€

The moment I said it, I surprised even myself.

Rino froze completely.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSay it again.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œI want to hear it.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s it.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll memorize it.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re going to remember it anyway.โ€

โ€œFor the rest of my life.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s still a long time.โ€

Rino pressed her forehead against my chest.

I looked around.

There were still a few people left in the classroom.

Hara and Shinozaki were there, too.

But by then, I didnโ€™t feel like rushing to pull away just because sheโ€™d leaned in a little closer.

โ€œTakahara-kunโ€”โ€

Haraโ€™s voice drifted over.

โ€œWeโ€™re almost done with the final check, so come back from your little world, okay?โ€

โ€œI can hear you.โ€

โ€œThat reply sounds way too natural.โ€

Shinozaki smiled sleepily.

Rino didnโ€™t pull away from my chest; if anything, she pressed her forehead against it just a little.

โ€œRino, get back to work.โ€

โ€œTen more seconds.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s too long.โ€

โ€œThen five seconds.โ€

โ€œThree seconds.โ€

โ€œSeven seconds.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make it longer.โ€

In the end, we stayed like that for about ten seconds.

Partly because I didnโ€™t let her go.

ใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ป

By the time we finished our final checks, Rino and I were the only ones left in the classroom.

โ€œIโ€™ll lock up.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here too.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

I closed the windows.

I checked the supplies.

I turned off the air conditioner.

Finally, I stood in front of the blackboard.

โ€œCafรฉ Yลซgureโ€

The finished sign.

Below it, a small group photo of all of us was stuck on the wall.

Rino and I were in the center.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s take a picture.โ€

โ€œNow?โ€

โ€œWith the classroom as it is right now.โ€

Rino took out her smartphone.

After hesitating for a moment, I stood next to her.

โ€œWhoโ€™s going to take it?โ€

โ€œSelf-timer.โ€

She placed her phone on the desk and hurried back to my side.

Ten seconds.

Nine seconds.

Rino stood next to me.

Eight seconds.

Our shoulders touched.

Seven seconds.

Rino took my hand.

Six seconds.

โ€œSeitaโ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

Five seconds.

โ€œLook at me.โ€

I do as she says and look at Rino.

Four seconds.

Sheโ€™s staring at me.

Three seconds.

Her face gets closer.

Two seconds.

โ€œRino?โ€

One second.

Rino gently kissed my cheek.

The sound of a camera shutter.

I froze completely.

Rino pulled away, her face bright red, and rushed to her phone.

โ€œGot it.โ€

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhat did you just do?โ€

โ€œI took a picture.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I mean.โ€

โ€œI kissed you on the cheek.โ€

โ€œWhy can you just say that so casually?โ€

โ€œBecause Seita did it to me, too.โ€

โ€œI kissed your forehead, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œThe spotโ€™s different, but a kiss is a kiss.โ€

Rino looked at the photo sheโ€™d taken.

I peered at it, too.

In the photo.

Rinoโ€™s lips were touching my cheek.

My eyes were wide open, and my face looked completely defenseless.

Behind us was the finished sign.

An empty classroom.

Three days before the cultural festival.

โ€œDonโ€™t show this to anyone, okay?โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œI mean it.โ€

โ€œItโ€™ll be our little secret.โ€

Rino carefully saved the photo.

My phone vibrated.

โ€œI sent it.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say I didnโ€™t want it.โ€

โ€œSave it.โ€

โ€œIs that an order?โ€

โ€œPlease.โ€

I opened the photo.

I had no reason to delete it.

So I saved it.

โ€œSaved it.โ€

Rino smiled happily.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œEven after the cultural festival is over, if we look at this photo, weโ€™ll remember, right?โ€

โ€œRemember what?โ€

โ€œThat weโ€™ve gotten this close.โ€

I looked at the photo again.

Before the cultural festival started.

I hadnโ€™t even had a proper conversation with Rino.

Now we call each other by our first names.

We hold hands.

We hug.

Thereโ€™s even a kiss captured here.

Not on the lips.

But the distance between us was nothing like it used to be.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThree days left, huh?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s have fun together.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYeah. Together.โ€

We left the classroom.

Just before the lights went out.

I looked back one last time.

The finished cafรฉ.

The sign we all made together.

Memories of school events that my past self had thought were absolutely out of reach.

This time, it felt like Iโ€™d be able to face the day without running away.

Rino took my hand.

I naturally squeezed hers back.

Three days until the cultural festival.

And I had stopped denying the fact that I was already looking forward to this cultural festival.
