Episode 58 – A Minor Accident

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Five days left until the cultural festival.

In the classroom after school, the final decorations were being put up.

I was standing on a stepladder, attaching paper decorations near the ceiling. Below me, Rino was holding the ladder steady while looking up at me with concern.

โ€œSeita, be careful.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine.โ€

โ€œIf you fall, Iโ€™ll catch you.โ€

โ€œThen weโ€™ll both fall.โ€

โ€œThen weโ€™ll fall together.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t say such unlucky things.โ€

Just as I reached for the last decoration with a wry smile, the stepladder wobbled slightly.

โ€œSeita!โ€

At the same moment I heard Rinoโ€™s voice, my body began to tilt.

I managed to land on the floor, but the momentum carried me into an embrace with Rino.

I wrapped my arms around her back to support her.

Our faces were close.

At a distance where our noses were almost touching, we both froze.

โ€œโ€ฆAre you okay?โ€

When I asked, Rino nodded, her cheeks flushing.

โ€œYeah. Because you held me, Seita.โ€

โ€œIt was an accident.โ€

โ€œIs not letting go an accident too?โ€

Her words made me realize something.

Even though Iโ€™d already made sure it was safe, I was still holding Rino.

โ€œโ€ฆWhatโ€™s this?โ€

โ€œIf you donโ€™t like it, Iโ€™ll let go.โ€

Rinoโ€™s voice sounded a little anxious.

After hesitating, I didnโ€™t loosen my arms.

โ€œJust a little longer.โ€

โ€œYou said it first, Seita.โ€

โ€œShut up.โ€

Rino happily pressed her cheek against my chest.

Just then, the classroom door opened.

โ€œI forgot somethingโ€”โ€

Hara, who had just walked in, froze.

Shinozaki, peeking in from behind her, widened her sleepy eyes just a little.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆTake your time.โ€

โ€œWait, thatโ€™s not it!โ€

Hara closed the door.

Their laughter faded away down the hallway.

I tried to pull away from Rino, but she wrapped her arms around my back.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œI said just a little longer.โ€

โ€œThey just saw us, didnโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œIf they saw us, thereโ€™s no point in rushing to pull away.โ€

โ€œThere is.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t think so.โ€

Rino looked up at me and smiled gently.

โ€œOn the day of the cultural festival, if Seita looks like heโ€™s going to fall, Iโ€™ll catch him.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the other way around. Iโ€™ll catch you.โ€

I answered reflexively.

Rinoโ€™s eyes flickered.

โ€œForever?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆAs long as I can.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll support Seita forever, too.โ€

We hugged briefly, then parted ways for good this time.

But before we went back to work, Rino held out her little finger.

I intertwined my little finger with hers.

Five days left until the cultural festival.

The classroom was almost finished.

And only the distance between us remained just as it was right before it was complete, continuing to touch each other.
