Episode 57 – Days left until the cultural festival

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Seven days until the cultural festival.

In other words, one week.

Just one week.

The cardboard boxes that had been piled up in the back of the classroom had almost all disappeared, and in their place, finished decorations were beginning to cover the walls and windows.

โ€œCafรฉ Twilightโ€

A sign bearing those words in gold lettering stood in front of the blackboard, and decorations mimicking an orange glow adorned the windowsill. Dark brown tablecloths covered the desks, and the menu was almost finished.

And then.

โ€œTakahara, thereโ€™s news.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got a bad feeling about this.โ€

It was right after I sat down at my desk that morning.

A male classmate leaned over my desk with both hands on it, looking strangely serious.

โ€œApparently, our class is getting the most attention for the first-year performance.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s because of Rino, right?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s part of it.โ€

โ€œSo what else is there?โ€

The boy stared at me in silence.

Why is he looking at me?

Stop it.

Iโ€™m not the kind of person who deserves to be looked at like that.

โ€œThe photo of Takahara and Hoshimiya-san.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

โ€œItโ€™s all the talk.โ€

โ€œCan I go home?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s still morning.โ€

I rested my forehead on my desk.

ziItโ€™s over.

Even before the cultural festival began, my spirit had already closed its curtains.

I know the reason.

Itโ€™s the promotional poster displayed around the school.

Rino and I, standing side by side in matching aprons.

So close our shoulders were touching.

Since Iโ€™d just looked at Rino, I was smiling more naturally than usual.

On top of that, after the photo shoot, several people saw us walking down the hallway holding hands.

It would be strange if rumors didnโ€™t spread.

โ€œTakahara, heyโ€”โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want to hear anything.โ€

โ€œSo, whatโ€™s the deal with you and Hoshimiya-sanโ€”โ€

โ€œGood morning, Seita.โ€

I heard a familiar voice.

I looked up.

Rino was standing right next to me.

โ€œGood morning.โ€

When I replied, Rino smiled happily.

That alone was enough to make the boy in front of me pull an indescribable face.

โ€œโ€ฆWell, Iโ€™m off then.โ€

โ€œWhere to?โ€

โ€œSo I donโ€™t get in the way of your youth.โ€

โ€œWait. Clear up this misunderstanding first.โ€

The boy ran off.

I didnโ€™t chase after him.

Or rather, I couldnโ€™t chase after him.

Because Rino had grabbed the sleeve of my school uniform.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWhat were you guys talking about just now?โ€

โ€œApparently, a photo of Rino and me is making the rounds.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m happy.โ€

โ€œWhy would that happen?โ€

โ€œBecause everyone will remember that Seita and I are together.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s just a promotional photo for the cultural festival.โ€

โ€œBut weโ€™re together.โ€

Rinoโ€™s logic was the same as always.

But I think the old me would have been pretty shaken up at this point.

Iโ€™d want them to take the photo down.

Iโ€™d think itโ€™d be better to keep my distance from Rino.

Thatโ€™s what I would have thought.

Iโ€™m still a little scared.

But thereโ€™s something more than that.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWe couldnโ€™t walk to school together today.โ€

โ€œYou had work this morning, right?โ€

โ€œYeah. Thatโ€™s why I felt lonely.โ€

โ€œIt was only a few hours.โ€

โ€œIt felt like forever.โ€

As she said that, Rino leaned in slightly, still holding onto my sleeve.

I looked around.

My classmates were already glancing our way.

It was too late now.

โ€œLetโ€™s have lunch together.โ€

When I said that, Rinoโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œYou said it, Seita?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re together every day, arenโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œBut you were the one who said it.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you like it?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m so happy.โ€

Rino gripped my sleeve, pulling it up to her chest.

โ€œThen, behind the warehouse.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll listen to you talk about work, too.โ€

The moment I said that, Rinoโ€™s eyes wavered.

โ€œโ€ฆSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œCan I say โ€˜I like youโ€™ about ten times today?โ€

โ€œYou say it that much all the time, donโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œThen twenty times.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t up the number.โ€

Rino smiled happily.

Watching that smile, I found myself smiling a little too.

And thatโ€™s when I realized something.

Before, every time Rino smiled at me, Iโ€™d try to run away.

Now itโ€™s different.

Iโ€™ve started making plans to see her again on my own.

As changes go, this one was pretty serious.

ใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ปใ€€โ€ป

After school.

With the cultural festival just a week away, almost everyone was still in the classroom.

Todayโ€™s task was the final check on customer service procedures.

Andโ€”checking our costumes other than our uniforms.

โ€œAlright then, the girls are going to go change!โ€

At Haraโ€™s call, the girls left the classroom carrying their costumes.

Rino was among them.

The boysโ€™ outfits remained the same as beforeโ€”they simply wore a waist-tied apron over their uniforms.

But it seemed the girlsโ€™ outfits had been changed slightly.

To match the retro cafรฉ atmosphere, they wore white blouses, black skirts that fell below the knees, and frilled aprons.

It wasnโ€™t a flashy cosplay.

Still, it gave a very different impression from their uniforms.

The classroom door opened.

The girls were coming back.

Without even realizing it, I was looking for Rino.

And I found her.

โ€œSeita.โ€

A white blouse.

A black skirt.

A white apron tied around her waist.

Her long hair was pulled back to one side, unlike usual.

Itโ€™s much more low-key than her stage costume.

But.

Thatโ€™s exactly why it struck a chord with me.

The outfit an ordinary high school girl wore for the cultural festival.

The ordinary cultural festival Rino had always wanted to have.

And here we are, spending it together right now.

โ€œWhat do you think?โ€

Rino stopped in front of me.

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIt suits you.โ€

โ€œIs that all?โ€

โ€œYou look cute.โ€

Words that would have taken a lot of courage to say before.

Now I can say them a little more naturally.

Rinoโ€™s cheeks turned red.

โ€œSeita, thatโ€™s not fair.โ€

โ€œYou asked me yourself.โ€

โ€œBut you say it more naturally than before.โ€

โ€œDo you mind?โ€

โ€œSay it more.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get too full of yourself.โ€

Rino laughed.

As I watched her smile, I suddenly noticed that the shoulder strap of her apron was slightly twisted.

โ€œRino, donโ€™t move.โ€

โ€œHuh?โ€

I reached out toward her shoulder.

I straightened the twisted strap with my finger.

Rinoโ€™s body froze.

โ€œSeita?โ€

โ€œThe strapโ€™s twisted.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYou touched me.โ€

โ€œI had to, didnโ€™t I?โ€

โ€œFrom you, Seita.โ€

โ€œI was just fixing your clothes.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m happy.โ€

Since it looked like she was going to make a big deal out of it again, I quickly pulled my hand away.

But at that very moment.

โ€œOkay, my turn now.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œSeitaโ€™s apron.โ€

โ€œI can tie it myself.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œThenโ€”โ€

โ€œBut I want to do it.โ€

Rino moved behind me.

She untied the string that was tied around my waist.

โ€œRino.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t move.โ€

Her fingertips touched my waist from behind.

Even through my uniform, my body was strangely aware of it.

Her slender fingers took the string and slowly retied it.

โ€œIs it too tight?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m fine.โ€

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œOkay, all done.โ€

Rino came back to face me.

Behind my waist was the knot sheโ€™d tied.

From a short distance away, Hara was watching us with an indescribable expression.

โ€œIโ€™m tired of pointing this out.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€

Haraโ€™s gaze was distant.

Shinozaki, sitting next to me, said sleepily,

โ€œLetโ€™s just leave him alone.โ€

โ€œI will.โ€

โ€œArenโ€™t you being a little rough with her?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m used to it.โ€

She had gotten used to it.

To the distance between us.

I felt like that was a problem in its own right.

But then, at that moment.

โ€œHoshimiya-san, can I talk to you for a sec?โ€

One of the boys called out to Rino.

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s about the customer flowโ€”Iโ€™d like you to check it with me.โ€

โ€œSure, no problem.โ€

Rino walked away from me.

She and the boy started walking between the desks.

In the past, my heart might have fluttered again at this point.

In fact, it did flutter a little.

But it was different from the last mock sales session.

Rino kept glancing over at me.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Every time our eyes met, she smiled just a little.

As if to say,

โ€œIโ€™m right here.โ€

As if to let me know that.

I let out a small sigh.

And then I did something that even surprised myself.

The moment Rino finished checking the customer flow and came back, I spoke up first.

โ€œRinoโ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œAre you done?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œThen come help me over here.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œSeita called me over.โ€

โ€œI meant to talk about work.โ€

โ€œBut he said to come.โ€

โ€œI said to help me.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s the same thing.โ€

โ€œNo, itโ€™s not.โ€

Rino came over to stand next to me, looking happy.

Then, she whispered in a voice so soft that no one around us could hear.

โ€œWere you jealous?โ€

โ€œA little.โ€

This time, I didnโ€™t try to hide it.

Rino froze.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œBut I know itโ€™s work, so thereโ€™s nothing I can do about it. Still, I was hoping sheโ€™d come back sooner.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆI canโ€™t.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œI like you too much.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t speak so loud.โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

Rino gripped my sleeve with both hands.

โ€œCan I hug you right now?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œEveryoneโ€™s here, arenโ€™t they?โ€

โ€œThen later.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make a reservation.โ€

โ€œI already did.โ€

It was decided without my say.

And, just as sheโ€™d said.

After we finished our work.

Rino and I were left behind in the classroom again.

The reason was simple.

As members of the planning committee, we had to do a final check.

Our classmates went home, and Hara and Shinozaki also left the classroom, saying, โ€œMake sure to lock up.โ€

The moment we were alone.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

Before I could even turn around, a soft sensation pressed against my body.

Rino had thrown her arms around me.

โ€œHey.โ€

โ€œI made a reservation.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t approve that reservation.โ€

โ€œBut Seita, Iโ€™m not letting go.โ€

I reflexively wrapped my arms around Rinoโ€™s back.

It wasnโ€™t until she said it that I realized it.

It was trueโ€”I hadnโ€™t let go.

โ€œYou asked me to come today, Seita.โ€

โ€œI just asked you to help out.โ€

โ€œYou wanted me to come back.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, I guess so.โ€

โ€œI was jealous, too.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make me say it.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m happy about all of it.โ€

Rino pressed her cheek against my chest.

I rested my chin lightly on her hair.

โ€œI think itโ€™s a hassle, though.โ€

โ€œWhat part?โ€

โ€œGetting jealous, or feeling lonely when youโ€™re gone.โ€

โ€œI feel the same way.โ€

โ€œYours is way more intense, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re a match.โ€

โ€œThe intensity is different.โ€

โ€œSeita, yours is going to get heavier too.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make such a grim prediction.โ€

Rino gave a small laugh.

Her voice echoed against my chest.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m a little scared that the day of the actual performance is coming.โ€

It was an unexpected thing for her to say.

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™ll be over.โ€

โ€œIt hasnโ€™t even started yet.โ€

โ€œBut it will end.โ€

Rino grabbed my uniform.

โ€œIโ€™m so happy right now, getting ready for it. Weโ€™re together after school, we go shopping, we take pictures, and every day I talk to you, Seita, about the cultural festival.โ€

โ€œWe can still see each other after the festivalโ€™s over.โ€

โ€œBut the cultural festival will end.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s always next year.โ€

โ€œThis cultural festival is only happening this year.โ€

It felt heavy.

But I felt like I understood a little bit.

I, too, get a strange feeling when I imagine the cultural festival ending.

At first, I wanted to run away.

I thought it was the biggest hurdle of my teenage years.

But nowโ€ฆ

โ€œI might be a little sad, too.โ€

When I said that, Rino looked up.

โ€œReally?โ€

โ€œYeah. The preparations were more fun than I expected.โ€

โ€œWas it because I was with you?โ€

โ€œQuite a bit.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes flickered.

โ€œQuite a bit?โ€

โ€œQuite a bit.โ€

โ€œThe most?โ€

โ€œWhat kind of ranking is that?โ€

โ€œThe reason it was fun.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆItโ€™s the most.โ€

I replied.

Rino fell silent.

She just looked at me.

Her eyes were a little moist.

โ€œDonโ€™t cry.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not crying.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re lying.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll cry if Seita wipes them away.โ€

โ€œThen donโ€™t cry.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re mean.โ€

Rino smiled.

I reached out to her cheek.

I gently wiped away the tears that were welling up in the corners of her eyes with my thumb.

Rinoโ€™s body froze.

We were close.

Still holding her tight.

My hand was on her cheek.

Rinoโ€™s arms were wrapped around my back.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWill you do it again today?โ€

I didnโ€™t ask what she meant.

A kiss on the forehead.

I think thatโ€™s what she meant.

In the past, I think I would have hesitated a little.

Today was different.

โ€œClose your eyes.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œSeita?โ€

โ€œHurry up.โ€

โ€œU-uh-huh.โ€

Rino closed her eyes.

I parted her bangs with my finger.

I slowly brought my face closer.

I let my lips touch her forehead.

One second.

Two seconds.

A little longer than before.

Rinoโ€™s fingers gripped my back tightly.

I pulled my lips away.

Rino didnโ€™t open her eyes right away.

โ€œRino?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆOne more time.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get carried away.โ€

โ€œJust once.โ€

โ€œWe just did it once, didnโ€™t we?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s whyโ€”one more time.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re asking for more now.โ€

Rino opened her eyes.

Her eyes were full of anticipation.

I let out a sigh.

And then, once more.

This time, instead of her foreheadโ€”I lightly brushed my lips against Rinoโ€™s hair.

Rino froze.

โ€œSeita?โ€

โ€œThat makes two.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a different spot.โ€

โ€œDid you not like it?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

Rino buried her face in my chest.

โ€œIโ€™m too happy to handle it.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s all youโ€™ve been saying lately.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s because youโ€™re getting closer and closer to me, Seita.โ€

I stroked Rinoโ€™s hair.

Naturally.

Much more naturally than before.

โ€œFor me, too, having you close by has become normal.โ€

At those words, Rino looked up.

โ€œNormal?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œEven being next to you?โ€

โ€œNormal.โ€

โ€œHolding hands too?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆWell, I guess.โ€

โ€œHugging me?โ€

โ€œThat still makes me a little nervous.โ€

โ€œWhat about kissing?โ€

โ€œJust on the forehead.โ€

โ€œWhat about the lips?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t ask.โ€

Rino laughed.

But I didnโ€™t press her further.

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll wait.โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œBut I might not be able to wait forever.โ€

โ€œWhich is it?โ€

โ€œIf you take too long, Seita, Iโ€™ll make the first move.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make such scary threats.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t you like it?โ€

I didnโ€™t answer.

I didnโ€™t deny it either.

That seemed to be enough to satisfy Rino.

She rested her cheek against my chest once more.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œWill you still do this for me even after the cultural festival is over?โ€

I tightened my arms around her back just a little.

โ€œEven after the cultural festival is over, Rino is still Rino, right?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œThen, nothing will change.โ€

Rinoโ€™s body trembled.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll never forget what you just said.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œNext year, too?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll remember, right?โ€

โ€œEven ten years from now?โ€

โ€œIf itโ€™s Rino, then yes.โ€

โ€œForever?โ€

โ€œProbably.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll definitely do it.โ€

Rino said it with absolute certainty.

Seven days left until the cultural festival.

We hadnโ€™t even reached the main event yet.

But for me, even this very moment of preparation was already beginning to feel like a part of my youth that I didnโ€™t want to lose.
