Episode 56 – Until a Name Is Given to a Nameless Relationship

The Schoolโ€™s Top Idol Is Acting Like Sheโ€™s My Childhood Friend for Some Reason and Just Keeps Closing the Distance on Her Ownโ€ฆ?! ~Stop Getting All Gloomy on Me Just Because I Turned You Down!~

Nine days left until the cultural festival.

On this day, our class was scheduled to hold a mock operation to simulate the actual event.

The desks in the classroom were pushed against the walls, and in their place, several two-seater tables were set up. Orange-tinted paper was pasted over the windows, and warm-colored shades were fitted over the light fixtures.

In front of the blackboard hung the sign for โ€œCafรฉ Twilight,โ€ which we had all worked together to complete.

If you walked into the classroom without knowing any better, you might think it was a real, small coffee shop.

โ€œTakahara, are you ready to handle the cash?โ€

โ€œWe canโ€™t use the coins for change until the actual event, so weโ€™ll use paper money today. Iโ€™ve also checked the receipt numbers and the order sheet.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s what I expect from an executive committee member.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s because the seating chart Rino made was so easy to follow.โ€

As I replied to the boys on the customer service team, Rino, who was standing a little ways away, reacted.

Wearing her white frilled apron, she looked over at me happily.

โ€œSeita, did you just compliment me?โ€

โ€œI was just stating a fact.โ€

โ€œSay it again.โ€

โ€œGet back to work.โ€

โ€œGetting a compliment from Seita is an important part of my job.โ€

โ€œThereโ€™s no such job description.โ€

Rino laughed cheerfully as she began arranging glasses on a tray.

In todayโ€™s mock operation, our classmatesโ€”other than those in the customer service and kitchen teamsโ€”were playing the role of customers.

Just like in a real situation, we took orders, carried dishes, and passed the receipts to the cashier. Since we couldnโ€™t use real food or drinks, the glasses were empty, and the plates held paper pancakes and pastries.

I was basically in charge of the cash register.

However, I was supposed to help with customer service when things got busy.

โ€œAll right, letโ€™s start the mock operation!โ€

At Haraโ€™s signal, the classroom door opened.

Our classmates playing the role of customers filed in.

Rino stood at the entrance, bowed, and smiled gently.

โ€œWelcome. Welcome to Cafรฉ Yลซgure.โ€

Cheers erupted from inside the classroom.

No wonder.

Here was a top-ranking active idol, serving customers in her school uniform and an apron. It was easy to imagine that even during the actual cultural festival, huge crowds would flock here just to see this sight.

โ€œHoshimiya-san, youโ€™re in charge of this table!โ€

โ€œCan I take a picture?โ€

โ€œYouโ€™ll be here for the actual festival, right?โ€

Male โ€œcustomersโ€ gathered around Rino.

They were all students from her own class.

It was just a customer service drill.

Rino was responding with a smile, without letting it bother her too much.

And yet.

Deep inside mc hest, I felt a strange flutter.

Rino smiled at another boy.

Sheโ€™s called by name.

Theyโ€™re chatting happily.

At work, I sometime stands next to even more men. During photo shoots, she might link arms with them or play the role of a girlfriend.

I understand thatโ€™s just part of the job.

Even though I understand that, right now I couldnโ€™t bear to watch it happen right in front of me.

โ€œSeita.โ€

Rino called out to me from in front of the cash register.

I looked up.

โ€œHereโ€™s the receipt for Table 2.โ€

โ€œJust put it there.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆOkay.โ€

My reply must have sounded colder than I intended.

Rinoโ€™s smile faltered slightly.

โ€œSeita, whatโ€™s wrong?โ€

โ€œNothing.โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t look like nothingโ€™s wrong.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re in the middle of a rehearsal, arenโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œButโ€”โ€

โ€œGet back to work. The customers are waiting.โ€

Another cold remark slipped out.

Rino looked down for just a moment.

Then, she put her professional smile back on and returned to her seat.

I went too far.

I know that.

Rino didnโ€™t do anything wrong.

I just didnโ€™t know how to deal with the feeling that had welled up inside me.

Jealousy.

I guess thatโ€™s what it is.

I hated seeing Rino smile at other guys.

For just a moment, I thought I wanted her to save that smile for me alone.

Itโ€™s selfish.

Even though I couldnโ€™t even give our relationship a name, let alone say outright that I liked her, I wanted to have a monopoly on the smiles she directed at anyone else.

I didnโ€™t think I had any right to do that.

So I acted cold toward her.

Not because of Rino, but to escape my own feelings.

The moment the mock sales presentation ended, I handed the ledger to Hara and left the classroom.

โ€œIโ€™m going to check on some supplies.โ€

Without waiting for a reply, I walked down the hallway.

I headed for an empty classroom where materials for the cultural festival were stored.

Pretending to check the contents of the cardboard boxes, I found myself alone.

Iโ€™m an idiot.

I have to apologize to Rino.

Even though I knew that, I couldnโ€™t bring myself to go back right away.

Itโ€™s always been like that.

Iโ€™m not good at expressing my feelings.

When I get hurt or feel anxious, I put distance between us first.

Because if I reject the other person, I can end things before I get rejected myself.

But I didnโ€™t want to do the same thing again.

โ€œSeita.โ€

I heard a voice from behind me.

I turned around.

Rino was standing in front of the door.

She was still wearing her apron and looked a little out of breath.

โ€œHow was practice?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s over.โ€

โ€œWhat about cleaning up?โ€

โ€œI left it to Hara and the others.โ€

โ€œYou should go back, shouldnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œNothingโ€™s more important than you, Seita.โ€

Rino closed the door and walked up to me.

Anxiety flickered in the depths of her eyes.

โ€œDid I do something?โ€

โ€œNo, you didnโ€™t.โ€

โ€œThen why were you being so cold?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆIโ€™m sorry.โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t want you to apologize.โ€

Rinoโ€™s finger tugged at the hem of my uniform.

โ€œI want to know why. Iโ€™m scared of Seita leaving me without me understanding why.โ€

I hadnโ€™t meant to push her away.

But from Rinoโ€™s perspective, thatโ€™s probably how my actions looked.

Iโ€™ll tell her if I get scared.

Iโ€™ll talk to her before I run away.

Even though Iโ€™d made the decision myself, I was about to do the same thing all over again.

โ€œโ€ฆI got jealous.โ€

I managed to squeeze the words out.

Rinoโ€™s eyes widened.

โ€œSeeing you surrounded by guys and laughing made me feel bad. But itโ€™s part of your job, so thereโ€™s nothing I can do about it, and you didnโ€™t do anything wrong. Even so, I got upset for no reason and acted cold toward you.โ€

โ€œSeitaโ€

โ€œWeโ€™re not even a couple yet.โ€

The moment those words left my mouth, Rinoโ€™s expression froze.

I knew Iโ€™d messed up.

But it was too late.

โ€œNot a couple?โ€

Rinoโ€™s voice was trembling.

โ€œEven though you called my name, held my hand, hugged me, and kissed me on the forehead?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not what I meant.โ€

โ€œDid you think I was the only one who mattered?โ€

โ€œNo.โ€

โ€œTo you, Seita, am I still nothing?โ€

The light faded from Rinoโ€™s eyes.

I instinctively grabbed her hand.

This time, I couldnโ€™t let her slip away.

โ€œI said no.โ€

I pulled her toward me.

Rinoโ€™s body brushed against my chest.

โ€œI just meant that our relationship doesnโ€™t have a name. Iโ€™ve never once thought of you as nothing, Rino.โ€

โ€œThen what am I?โ€

โ€œSomeone important to me.โ€

โ€œIs that all?โ€

โ€œThe closest person to me.โ€

โ€œAnything else?โ€

Rino grabbed my chest and looked up at me, as if to keep me from getting away.

Her eyes were searching for an answer.

I, too, could no longer keep running away with vague words.

โ€œI didnโ€™t want you to smile at other guys when I wasnโ€™t around.โ€

With every word I spoke, a ugly part of myself was laid bare.

โ€œI hated seeing the expression you gave me directed at other people. I wanted to believe you were mine alone.โ€

Rinoโ€™s eyes wavered wildly.

โ€œThatโ€™s selfish of me. Rinoโ€™s an idolโ€”itโ€™s part of her job to smile at everyone.โ€

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œBesides, I havenโ€™t even properly told you I like you yet. And yet, Iโ€™m just being jealousโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™m happy.โ€

She cut me off.

Rino was smiling with a face that looked like she was about to cry.

โ€œIโ€™m so happy.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œBecause you want to have me all to yourself.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not something so beautiful.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not beautiful either.โ€

Rino pressed her face against my chest.

โ€œThe truth is, I hate it even when youโ€™re just talking to Hara-san or Shinozaki-san. I hate that there are moments in your life I donโ€™t know about. I hate that the person you used to love is still inside youโ€”I hate it all.โ€

Her arms wrap around my back.

โ€œBut Iโ€™m holding back because I donโ€™t want to make Seita feel uncomfortable.โ€

โ€œThere are times when it doesnโ€™t look like youโ€™re holding back, though.โ€

โ€œI really am.โ€

โ€œYour standards are scary.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s why weโ€™re on the same page.โ€

Rino pressed her cheek against my chest.

โ€œSeita wants to have me all to himself. I want to have Seita all to myself, too.โ€

โ€œSaying that out loud is way too dangerous, donโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œBut it makes me happy.โ€

After hesitating for a moment, I wrapped my arms around Rinoโ€™s back.

I held her close.

The tension slowly drained from her body.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry about earlier.โ€

โ€œAre you going to be cold to me again?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll try not to.โ€

โ€œPromise?โ€

โ€œIf I start to get scared, Iโ€™ll tell you first.โ€

โ€œWhat if I get jealous?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆIโ€™ll tell you that, too.โ€

โ€œThen Iโ€™ll tell you, too.โ€

โ€œYou already say way too much, Rino.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll say even more.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make it worse.โ€

Rino laughed softly against my chest.

After we hugged for a while, she lifted her face.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œThe smile I show other people is different from the one I show you, Seita.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

โ€œYeah. My work smile is for everyone who sees me. But when I smile at you, Seita, itโ€™s because I want you to fall for me.โ€

My heart pounded.

โ€œIโ€™m happy when Seita looks at me. Iโ€™m even happier when you call my name. And if you touch me, Iโ€™m happy for the rest of the day.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s a lot to handle.โ€

โ€œOnly for you, Seita.โ€

Rino took my hand and guided it to her cheek.

It felt soft.

She rested her face against my hand, looking as if she felt safe.

โ€œI only show this face to Seita.โ€

โ€œWhat kind of face?โ€

โ€œThe face of a girl who canโ€™t help but love Seita.โ€

I couldnโ€™t stand it and started to look away.

But Rinoโ€™s hand touched my cheek and turned my face back toward her.

โ€œDonโ€™t run away.โ€

โ€œYouโ€™re too close.โ€

โ€œDo you mind?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t mind.โ€

โ€œThen look at me.โ€

An empty classroom.

Piles of cardboard boxes.

Far off in the hallway, I could hear the voices of my classmates cleaning up.

It was as if Rino and I were the only ones there, cut off from the hustle and bustle of the cultural festival, facing each other.

โ€œSeita.โ€

โ€œWhat?โ€

โ€œCan I thank you for being jealous?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s not the kind of feeling you thank someone for, is it?โ€

โ€œBut for me, it was a reward.โ€

Rino stood on tiptoe a little.

Our faces drew closer.

For a split second, I thought our lips were going to touch.

My body froze.

Rinoโ€™s lips gently brushed against my cheek.

Just for an instant.

Leaving a soft sensation behind, she pulled away immediately.

I couldnโ€™t move.

โ€œโ€ฆRino?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s payback for when you kissed my forehead.โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say anything about my cheek.โ€

โ€œDid you mind?โ€

โ€œWellโ€ฆโ€

I didnโ€™t mind.

If anything, only the spot she touched felt hot.

Rino watched my reaction, her cheeks flushing with anxiety.

She was waiting to see if Iโ€™d reject her.

โ€œI donโ€™t mind.โ€

When I answered, Rinoโ€™s eyes lit up.

โ€œCan I do it one more time?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t get carried away.โ€

โ€œThen, starting with Seita.โ€

โ€œNo way.โ€

โ€œThat was a quick answer.โ€

โ€œNot today, anyway.โ€

After I said that, Rino froze.

I, too, realized Iโ€™d added an unnecessary comment.

โ€œToday?โ€

โ€œIt just came out that way.โ€

โ€œWill you do it tomorrow?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t make a reservation.โ€

โ€œWhat about the day of the cultural festival?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s whyโ€”โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be looking forward to it.โ€

Rino laughed happily and hugged me close to her chest once more.

Aware of the lingering sensation on my cheek, I hugged her back.

Nine days left until the cultural festival.

During the mock sales event, we had a slight misunderstanding, and for the first time, we put our jealousy into words.

And I realized that even when Rino smiled at someone else, the way she looked at me was different.

Along with the faint warmth left on my cheek.
