Episode 11 – true identity

A Cheeky Junior Denied Me My Entire Life, so I Tested What Would Happen if I Jumped off a Rooftop to Vent My Anger

“Are you alright? Are you hurt? Aoi-kun.”

Asama-san holds out her hand towards me, who has fallen down. It can’t be that I don’t have any injuriesโ€ฆโ€ฆ . I was certainly stabbed in the heart with a knife just now. I can still see the red blood wetting the floor with my own eyes.

—And yet I have no injuries.

It’s impossible, but that was the reality in front of me.

“Thanksโ€ฆโ€ฆ”

At any rate, I take Asama-san’s hand and stand up. I feel like this girl is always reaching out to me.

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ.โ€

I heard a sound that sounded like something was broken from the living room. The man whose head Asama-san had just crushed in her grip.

โ€œSturdy for nothing, this time.”

Asama-san said as if she didn’t care, and kicked the man holding the knife away. She has such physical strength that it is almost unbelievable that she is a human being. It’s not even a โ€ฆโ€ฆ match.

The man who was slammed to the floor again and again stopped moving as it was.

“Ugh โ€ฆโ€ฆ!”

Delayed, evasive feeling. A feeling as if the contents of my stomach were refluxing. I was more scared that Asama-san had killed someone โ€ฆโ€ฆ as a matter of course than that I had been stabbed.

“It’s all right. This is not a human being.”

Did she sense my feelings? Asama-san lifted the fallen man and stripped him of the scarf and coat he had been wearing.

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ Eh?”

If you look closely, you will see that it was a badly made doll.

“There are people who can manipulate these things at will. Well, I guess they’re just sentinels to see what’s going on. I guess they wanted to see how โ€ฆโ€ฆ good you were.”

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ knifing me is confirmation?”

“But as usual, they’re not very good at making them. You have to hide it with a coat and scarf to make it look human.”

Asama-san laughs. I can’t say anything.

“Welcome back, Onee san”

And then Asama-san’s sister, Rio-san, opens her mouth, not looking particularly perturbed.

“What is it, Rio, you’re here? I’ve told you repeatedly that you shouldn’t come because it’s dangerous.”

“I don’t have a problem with it. I’m aware of that. โ€ฆโ€ฆ But, Onee san. You haven’t given any explanation to Aoi-san, have you? I feel sorry for him, he will be so upset, right?”

“Fufu, Aoi-kun will be fine. Aoi kun is special. Just playing vampire won’t upset him. โ€ฆโ€ฆright?โ€

“No, I knew though.”
I worded it back to her in no time. Asama-san laughed.

“Then let’s talk a little. I’m sorry, Rio, but you need to leave. There hasn’t been any progress yet anyway, has there?”

“โ€ฆI understand. In return, could you please take me out to eat ramen next time? I can’t go to a ramen restaurant by myself.”

Leaving behind words that sounded like those of a junior high school student, Rio left. Asama-san sat on the sofa in the living room, not caring that the room was in disrepair.

I exhaled as if I had given up and sat down in front of Asama-san.

“Asama-san,โ€ฆโ€ฆ, who are you?”

My brain still can’t recognise the scene from earlier as reality. But at the same time, somewhere, I was convincedโ€ฆโ€ฆ. Asama-san is not a human being.
I may have been thinly aware of it from the first time I saw her.

โ€ฆโ€ฆ including the mutation, which is happening to my body.

“What do I look like to you, Aoi-kun?”

Asama-san looks at me with a face as if testing me. โ€ฆโ€ฆI racked my brains a bit, but there was only one answer that came to mind.

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ maybe, like a vampire?”

Hearing this, Asama-san laughed.

“Fufu, half right I guess. It’s true that some people call us that, but I don’t suck blood and I don’t mind the sunlight. I’m not even afraid of the cross.”

Asama-san put the necklace of the cross, which had fallen on the floor, around her neck. I certainly didn’t think it was scary either.

“But you’re not a normal person, are you, Asama-san? At least I โ€ฆโ€ฆ am not a human being anymore.”

“I doubt that. Just because you’re a bit stronger and your wounds heal faster doesn’t mean you’re not a human being in my opinion. The difference between a human being and a monster is something much more lethal. They are weaker than me, they don’t regenerate as well. But a much, much scarier monster than me. Such things exist in this world.”

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ So what kind of beings are I and Asama-san?”

I’m not a vampire, human or a monster. Then what have I become?

“There’s no strict definition, but most people would call me an ‘immortalโ€™. because I don’t die no matter what I do. Easy to understand, isn’t it?”

“No, it’s easy to understand, but โ€ฆโ€ฆ”

“In short, we’re just people who don’t die”

“โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ..โ€

I don’t know what to say, so I let my gaze escape out the window. It was completely dark and my eyes met my own reflection in the windowpane.

โ€ฆโ€ฆ For some reason, I was smiling.

“Well, Aoi-kun, you don’t need to worry about that. Like now, there are times when troublesome things come to kill us, but most of the time I can handle it. Even if I’m not there, Aoi-kun won’t die.”

“Is that because I’m also โ€ฆโ€ฆ that, an immortal?”

“Right. Aoi-kun, right now, he won’t die even if he gets stabbed in the heart with a knife. Even if he gets run over by a truck, sinks to the bottom of the ocean, or gets shot in the head with a gun, he won’t dieโ€ฆ โ€ฆJust like me.โ€

“โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

I’m not sure if that’s something I should be happy about. I felt like I was getting into some kind of trouble, but strangely enough I didn’t feel bad about it.

“Well, no matter how much I explain it to you, you probably won’t understand, so let’s go see the owner of this doll again sometime. I’ll show you firsthand what it means to not die.”

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ Is that the special world you’re talking about, Asama-san?”

“Fufu, I don’t know. That’s not for me to decide, it’s for Aoi-kun to decide.”

Asama-san stands up. I was a little worried and called out to Asama-san’s back.

“Wait. I want to ask you one last question, why did you make me โ€ฆโ€ฆ umm, an immortal?”

I still don’t remember anything clear. But I definitely should have jumped off the roof and died. Asama san helped me like that. he saved me and transformed my into a body that wouldn’t die.

I wanted to hear the reason.

“Fufuโ€ฆ”

Asama-san laughed. She laughed and shook her head.

“I’m not helping Aoi-kun.”

“No, but it’s true that I’m alive like this. That’s because Asama-san saved me when I jumped to my deathโ€””

โ€œ—I also committed suicide a long time ago.”

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ Eh?”

The sudden words made my eyes widen involuntarily.

“But I didn’t die. Aoi-kun didn’t die either. We are the remnants of death who despaired of this world and still could not die. So we are the same weaklings. โ€ฆโ€ฆ That’s one of the reasons I’m taking care of you. Do you understand?”

Asama-san looks at me. I can only nod silently.

What is still happening to me? What kind of world have I been put into? I don’t understand anything. โ€ฆโ€ฆ But what bothered me more than that is that Asama-san, who seems to be supernatural, also had a weakness that made her choose to die on her own.

โ€ฆ.. same as me, weakness.

“Well, don’t worry,Things like I want you to fight alongside me. I want you to protect me. I won’t say anything like that. What I want you to do, Aoi-kun, is something else.”

“I haven’t always been good at exercise, so I appreciate that, though โ€ฆโ€ฆ”

“I’ll explain more about immortals another time. I’ll tell you more about immortals another time. โ€ฆโ€ฆ But for now, let’s have dinner, shall we? I found a good ramen shop.”

And so we went straight to eat ramen. โ€ฆโ€ฆIn the meantime, I tried eating it with more garlic, but still nothing unusual happened to my body. โ€ฆโ€ฆ Well, you have to be careful about bad breath, though.

Anyway we had a nice bowl of ramen, went home, had a bath and went straight back to our room. There were plenty of questions I still wanted to ask, but my brain couldn’t process any more of what was being said. There’s no reason to rush, and I can ask her tomorrow for more details.

Or rather, I have to go to school tomorrow. Just because I’m not dying is no reason not to live.

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ can’t sleep.”

But I couldn’t get to sleep. Yesterday I could not sleep well, and today, too, sleepiness has not come at all. My body feels unnaturally well.

“Is this also the effect of the body that won’t die?”

I say and get up. โ€ฆโ€ฆ The body that never dies. Immortals. When I heard that, the first thing that came to mind was a very boring sentiment.

“โ€ฆโ€ฆ That’s ridiculous.”

Still, I had something I really wanted to try. So, I left my room and walked through the night streets, being careful not to wake Asama-san.

“โ”€ โ”€ You are very careless after being stabbed through the heart, aren’t you?”

Then, what appeared was a man in his prime, with solemn eyes, like a priest. I had no idea what it meant to not die yet.
