Episode 16 – Lottery

How I, a Hated Person, Ended Up Staying With Three Beautiful Sisters

The day after the midterm exams, or rather, the day after I joined Class 3-A.

It was now after-school homeroom.

The homeroom teacher stood at the front of the classroom looking cheerful, so I thought the exam results would be returned early.

However, the enthusiastic teacher made an unexpected announcement.

“First, please look at the handouts I just distributed. Next Friday is a field trip. The destination is a nearby nature park. We will meet there and explore freely, but you will be divided into groups. Minimum of two people, maximum of four. Solo activities are prohibited ! That’s all ! Since time is precious, please decide on your groups by the end of this homeroom period !”

That statement caused a stir in the classroom.

It was an unannounced field trip.

Some students were excited with bright faces, while others frowned at the mention of group assignments.

I was neither. I just stared blankly at the blackboard and tuned out the conversation.

“…Oh.”

When I glanced at Maho, she was naturally gathered with her close group of female friends.

It was the usual group of five.

However, due to the maximum limit of four people, it seemed that someone would have to be left out.

I thought that this would surely lead to tension among the five of them and create an awkward atmosphere.

“Sensei, if we can’t form a group of five, someone will have to be left out, right?”

Just then, Maho raised her hand.

“That’s right. Considering the total number of people, one option is to mix in those who haven’t been assigned to a group and reorganize by lottery. That way, it’ll be fair, and no one can complain. Why not try interacting with someone outside your circle?”

At those words, the classroom atmosphere grew even more tense.

Maho’s group was also quietly arguing over who to exclude. Of course, Maho was the clear leader, so the other four were silently clashing without saying anything.

It must be tough to mediate that.

The teacher’s ego is just idealistic, and it’s unrealistic to expect people who don’t usually talk to become friends just because of a field trip.

Moreover, Maho’s group has a flashy, cheerful personality, so I don’t think they’ll mix well with the others.

“…What should I do.”

Just as I muttered that while looking down,

unexpectedly, Maho made a proposal.

“Everyone, let’s draw lots.”

It was unexpected, to say the least.

She was the one who wanted fairness.

Several people nodded in agreement.

Maho’s influence was not to be underestimated.

And so, the lottery was held.

The participants were Maho’s group of five, and me…that was it. Surprisingly, I was the only one left over.

The result—

“Wait, seriously…?”

I ended up paired with an unknown girl from Maho’s group. I wondered why it didn’t end up being three versus three even though there were six of us, but anyway, the group assignments were finalized.

That was the plan, but the girl I didn’t know glared at me with obvious disgust.

“This is the worst ! Being stuck alone with a perverted rapist ! I’m definitely going to get attacked in the bushes of the nature park ! I don’t want to be paired with such a piece of trash !”

She complained and complained, like a child who didn’t get the toy they wanted.

She kept a five-meter distance from me, tearfully seeking help from those around her.

Unfortunately, the person she was seeking help from was me. It seemed that my name had become even more well-known due to the incident with Akane senpai and Katsuyama senpai, and no one was willing to help me.

The homeroom teacher just smiled in disbelief. As a result of prioritizing fairness, the class atmosphere was on the verge of collapse. I’m not at fault. I didn’t do anything this time. I was just disliked.

But still, it’s cruel to make me be her partner.

I’m not really interested in the field trip anyway, so I guess I’ll just have to persuade the homeroom teacher to make an exception.

“Sensei—”

I looked the homeroom teacher in the eye and raised my hand slightly.

However, once again, Maho interrupted me.

“—I’ll be your partner. I was the one who suggested the lottery in the first place. Is that okay with you? Arata Kojiro kun.”

“…Yeah.”

“So, Sensei, the group assignments are done. Please make it a group of two with Segawa Maho and Arata Kojiro .”

“A-alright ! So, the group representatives should come get some paper to write the schedule. Submit it by the end of the week ! Everyone, you’re dismissed !”

The whims of fate mercilessly drag me into it.

As the homeroom teacher wrapped things up, a murmur spread throughout the classroom.

“I thought he’d given up on Akane senpai, but now he’s going after her younger sister, Maho chan too…”

“The biggest jerk in school is hitting on girls again…”

“The executioner’s name isn’t just for show. Still, Maho chan is way too kind to team up with a guy like that !”

The meaningless nickname spread even further. Maho’s stock rose, and I was disliked even more.

“…Haa.”

I sighed quietly, pretended to leave, and approached Maho.

Then, I whispered.

“Just write down wherever you want to go on the schedule. Or you can discuss it with the four people from earlier and coordinate the locations. I’ll just make up some excuse to take the day off.”

Maho looked at me with a puzzled expression, but I didn’t care and left the classroom.

I tried not to cause any unnecessary trouble.

I casually pushed Maho away so she wouldn’t get involved with me.

But that night.

When I returned to the apartment, Maho was standing in the living room.

“You don’t have to go out of your way for me !”

She suddenly yelled at me.

“…Huh? What are you talking about?”

“The field trip ! I’m going on the field trip with you ! No matter what anyone else says !”

“No, you…if you team up with me, you’ll get caught up in the rumors too ! I’m already getting attention because of Akane senpai’s thing…”

“Oh? Are you worried about me? But I’m already involved, so it’s too late now ! Besides, the one at fault inAkane’s incident is that third-year jerk ! You don’t have to worry about anything !”

Maho slammed the printouts down on the table.

“Then let’s get started on the itinerary right away. If we don’t decide on it properly, the field trip will be ruined!”

“No, I have other things to do after this—”

“Stop making excuses and sit down already.”

My resistance was futile.

There was no choice.

I quietly sat down on the sofa.

And so, the field trip itinerary meeting between me and Maho began in the living room.
