“Hey, hey ! You !”
The sharp voice brought me back to reality.
“…Oh, sorry. I was spacing out.”
“Come on…you weren’t having a weird dream, were you?”
Maho, who was sitting next to me, frowned.
But it seemed more like she was exasperated than angry.
“I guess it was a strange dream, in a way.”
“It wasn’t some creepy fantasy, was it?”
“…..I don’t think so.”
The scene of me pushing her down flashed through my mind, but I quickly dismissed it and denied it.
“Right…anyway, the field trip is almost over, so let’s go home. I have to write and submit a report at school this afternoon, so pull yourself together !”
“I know.”
As I replied, I gently rubbed the back of my neck.
The memories from earlier were still lingering in the back of my mind.
The darkness of that storage room. The feel of her hair. The faint sweet scent. The crying and the weak voice that almost said her name.
My chest ached slightly.
My daily life changed after that day. Before I knew it, I had been given a strange nickname, and even classmates I had only known casually started to avoid me openly.
I’m sure that girl and her friends spread bad rumors about me. They must have been students from the neighboring middle school…that’s the only possibility.
But now is not the time to be thinking about that.
Ignoring Maho’s words, I returned to school in the afternoon to submit my report. It’s just a formal summary, but it will definitely affect my grade.
I have to do well in my studies.
As I was thinking about this, I arrived at the classroom and immediately sat down at my desk and took out my writing utensils. Maho was sitting across from me, looking somewhat distracted as she stared at her smartphone. It seemed like she was indicating that she wanted me to summarize the report. I felt like she was saying, “You’re a genius, so you can do it, right?”
“…I’ll summarize it, so just give me the final confirmation.”

After glancing at the arrogant Maho, I started working on the report.
I summarized the scenery I saw at the nature park and my feelings about it in a straightforward manner. I wasn’t particularly moved by anything, but I wrote it in a way that made sense.
I added some pictures to make it easier to understand.
It was something I was used to doing.
Since middle school, I had been making an effort.
Since that day, I had been alone, so I never gave up on my studies.
That’s why I didn’t stop working even in this situation.
I calmly finished the report and handed it in with a casual expression.
“It’s done.”
I handed the report, which I had compiled on A3 paper, to Maho.
Maho nodded as if she understood, saying, “Hmm, hmm.” but in the end, she smiled and said, “That’s good !”
“Well, I’ll take it to the teacher, so you can go home first. It seems like everyone is dispersing anyway.”
“Got it.”
I headed home. I didn’t say goodbye or anything like that. If she realized that we were having a normal conversation, it would be a bother for Maho. So, I kept my distance and acted indifferently.
